UNIOSUN has raked in a total of US$12 million in 180days

The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, Prof. Clement Adebooye, has said scholars from the university won a total of US$12 million in research grants, in the six months.UNIOSUN

The VC linked the development to the encouragement the management has given to the staff of the institution to proffer solutions to global problems.

Adebooye disclosed this in reaction to the recent feat achieved by the University’s Director of Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute, Prof John Agbonifo and the Director of the Office of Research and Innovation Management, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, who formed a research consortium with Professor Jean-Marc Trouille of Bradford University, for a research project titled ‘The European Union and Africa in a Multi Crises World.”

A statement by the UNIOSUN Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, on Saturday explained that the project was funded by the ERASMUS-JMO-2023-NETWORKS-HEI-NON-EU-AFRICA to the tune of €7,800,000.

The statement partly read, “Professor Agbonifo is a key facilitator of the project, while Professor Ogen is the Project Financial Signatory.

Take advantage of grants, VC urges scholars
“AfriquEurope is the largest Jean Monnet network of its kind and the largest academic network in terms of its number of participating institutions and the number of countries represented across Africa and Europe. It will also provide a framework for unique cooperation between universities and think tanks on matters relevant to Africans and Europeans.

“The aim of the AfriquEurope Network is to support the EU’s effort to recalibrate its partnership with Africa, whilst advocating closer cooperation between the two continents.”

Adebooye while reacting to the achievements of the two staff of the university, said part of his mission as Vice Chancellor was already being realised with various research efforts of the institution’s staff attracting various grants.

“In total, UNIOSUN has raked in a total of US$12 million in 2023 alone. We are proud of our researchers. This latest grant is another milestone in our research and global visibility agenda. I believe that in the not-too-distant future, we would be among universities with the highest grants won in this part of the world,” .

Adebooye who himself is the first black man to win the Humboldt Alumni Award, German Scientist of the year some years back for breaking research barrier in the cultivation of Snake tomato(Trichosanthes cucumerina). said. Also Adebooye was recently elected as the chair/president of the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES), a networking organisation established in 2011 by the German government and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR : THE MASQUERADE OF ELDERS.

In Yorubaland, located in Southwest Nigeria, the masquerade, known as “Egungun,” represents the spirits of forefathers and ancestors, who periodically visit his descendants and give them a lot of blessings in prayer. Renown among those masquerades of elders in Yorubaland are “Oloolu” and “Alapansanpa” in Ibadan, Oyo State, Esuu, Kanmololu and Paramole, all in Gbongan, Osun State.

In the ancient Yorubaland, there was a masquerade of elders called Boosere. This masquerade, an itinerant player that moved all over the Yoruba nation, was respected for its unique style, its secretive mode of operation and its principle.

The unique principle of masquerades of elders was that they did not dance around like others but only visited certain family heads. Indeed, they were masquerades of proverbs.
Boosere moved with just three people: its handler (Atookun), its interpreter and its drummer. Boosere would not move from house to house in the morning or afternoon or evening, rather it moved in the dead of the night. However, the heads of the families that he would visit would have been informed about his visit, so that they could wait for him at their ancestral meeting pavilion.
Each time the masquerade met a head of any given family, the drummer would talk with the drum and the interpreter would interpret with parable, telling the family, “continue with your behavioral pattern.” For several years the masquerade ruled the night with mystery and myth.

However one of the elders one day summoned modicum of courage to ask his guest why the masquerade made the same statement everywhere, and the handler stressed that Boosere was only trying to draw the attention of the world to the leadership style of any given individual head of family.
The masquerade’s handler said the head of family who used his native wisdom and humility to bring kinsmen and women together would not be forgotten, while the hostile ones who had the habit of scaring his family members away would not be forgotten as well.

It was learnt that the masquerade through his lone crusade has saved many families from poor coordination, power mongering and selfishness of some heads of families, a situation that assisted greatly in strengthening the bond of so many families in Yorubaland.
From the analogy above, it could be seen that Atiku Abubakar has a resemblance of these masquerades of elders. For one, he is not the everyday masquerade that dances in every market square. He is not the attention-seeking politician who dances to every tune and by so doing, dances himself lame before the actual dance competition is flagged off. He is definitely the big player.

Like the masquerade of elders, he knows the point men in every nook and cranny of Nigeria and has their understanding. Few Nigerian politicians know this country as he does. Indeed as a bridge builder, Atiku is at home in every geo-political zone and has his tentacles in almost every Nigerian nationality. As an officer in the Nigerian Customs Service, he traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria, an experience that prepared him for high office.
He is not only an orator but also a good conversationalist, one who is equally good at speaking and listening.

A man of strong conviction, once he is sure of himself, he never shies away from being alone, even if it means fighting alone. Eagles don’t fly in companies anyway; they fly alone. He is a veteran of many life’s battles and winner of them all.
But the beauty of it all is that he is a team player, a democrat to the bone marrow. He believes in strong alliances and has proven to be a loyalist to good principles and causes. At the commencement of the Fourth Republic, he led the biggest political machinery in Nigeria and probably in Africa. Up till today, and in spite of shifting alliances here and there, the Atiku machinery is still largely intact. His political associates see him as standing head and shoulders above others as a reliable leader of men, money and materials.
Today, there is probably no political figure in Nigeria whose followership cuts across every geo-political zone like the Turakin Adamawa. Like the masquerade of elders whose constituency covered the whole of Yorubaland, Atiku is a national leader whose influence shines nation-wide like the sun

In furtherance to my analogy, I remember telling us that Boosere the masquerade moved only with three people: its handler, its interpreter and its drummer. These three were its pathfinders, its compass and navigator. They were central to the masquerade’s programme. In like manner, three principles are cardinal to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

These are rule of law, internal democracy and federalism.
It is baffling that most Nigerian politicians and political leaders only mouth democracy but in truth they are none democrats not to talk of believing in the rule of law. As a staunch advocate of the rule of law, he pursued 13 different cases on matters of constitutionalism to the Supreme Court, the nation’s apex court, winning all except one which was not decided during the third term saga. That is Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri Adamawa.

With his firm and unshakable belief in the rule of law, it follows therefore that he is an apostle of peace and peaceful change. With him, in spite of the grassroot followership which he enjoys nationwide even among the talakawa, winning elections is never a do-or-die affair. This explains why his followers never run riot. He is a democrat through and through.
Talking about democracy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar believes you cannot give what you don’t have. In similar vein, you should not preach what you don’t believe in or practise. Democracy is a practice which grows from within. A father who is dictatorial at home can hardly lead a democratic institution successfully without running into problems.

It is the view of Atiku Abubakar that democracy must flow from within. It must be perfected internally before attempting to practice it externally. He is of the firm belief that in political organisations, the modus operandi must be determined through internal democracy. In choosing leaders, picking electoral candidates and determining policy thrusts, the process must not only be democratic but also transparently done.

His views on federalism have been so well articulated that he cannot swallow them. His call for a restructuring of Nigeria is a loud call for a return of Nigeria to true and undiluted federalism.
Speaking at the launch of a book, some years back “We Are Biafrans,” at Yaradua centre in Abuja on 31st May 2016, Atiku said the rising spate of agitations nationwide called “for a restructuring and renewal of our federation to make it less centralised, less suffocating and less dictatorial in the affairs of our country’s constituent units and localities.

“As some of you may know, I have for a long time advocated the need to restructure our federation. Our current structure and the practices it has encouraged and have been a major impediment to the economic and political development of our country.”

He added: “In short, it has not served Nigeria well, and at the risk of reproach, it has not served my part of the country, the North, well. The call for restructuring is even more relevant today in light of the governance and economic challenges facing us and the rising tide of agitations, some militant and violent, require a reset in our relationships as a united nation.”

To conclude my analogy of the masquerade of elders, I must call our attention to the fact that while Boosere the masquerade of the elder operated only during the night, Atiku Abubakar is a 24-hour masquerade. As organized and calculating as he is, every hour of the day is precious to him. Like the old radio jingle of FAN Ice Cream, anytime is Fan time; morning, noon and night.

ATIKU CONGRATULATES ADELEKE, PDP FAMILY AND THE PEOPLE OF OSUN STATE NOTING THAT THE VICTORY WAS WELL-EARNED

In what looked like his first official assignment since his well-deserved election as the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (GCON) has led the PDP family to a well deserved victory at the Osun State gubernatorial election held on Saturday July 16, 2022.

The Wazirin of Adamawa who realized the important of the party duty has cut short his personal overseas trip in order to mobilize and motivate the party faithful in the state for onerous electoral duty.

In the election, Ademola Adeleke, the PDP flag bearer won in 17 Local Government Area polling 403,371 votes to beat his closes rival and the incumbent Gboyega Oyetola who polled 375,027 votes winning in 13 Local Government Area.

In his congratulatory message shortly after the declaration of the result entitled: Light has come to Osun, the PDP presidential candidate heartily congratulates the governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke, the PDP family and the great people of Osun State stating that the victory at the poll was well-fought.

No doubt, this victory is a demonstration of the leadership qualities of the former Vice-President who had cut short his personal trip abroad in order to mobilize and motivate the party faithful for this onerous assignment.

At the occasion, he had charged the people of Osun to come out en masse to vote and to defend their votes.

The victory also is a measure of the acceptability of the person of Ademola Adeleke and the growing popularity of PDP and the waning influence of APC in the state, a fact that was highlighted by the Atiku Abubakar in his campaign speech at the occasion.

It is also a vindication of the statement made by the Wazirin who had pointed out that Osun state is a PDP state but had always had electoral victory fraudulently upturned in the past.

By this victory, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and the PDP family have made a statement about what to expect; a foretaste of victory in the forth-coming 2023 general election.

Nigerians are indeed yearning for PDP.

Yoruba Group Backs Osinbajo’s Interest In 2023 Presidency, Insists on Power Shift To South-West

A pan Yoruba socio-political group, Yoruba Patriots Movement (YPM) has welcomed the declaration of the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (PYO) to succeed his principal President Mohammadu Buhari, describing it as right and timely.

The meeting noted that having gone through the tutelage with thorough assimilation of good governance from a great leader and patriot, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s developmental leadership for eight years and as the partner for seven years to President Mohammadu Buhari GCFR, Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria, both cognitive experiences from two foremost Nigerians and Patriotic Leaders of our time coupled with his intimidating unbeatable (CV) all round robust educational and professional with complete infrastructure and experience in Next-Level Prosperity Deliverables for Nigeria and Nigerians in the atmosphere of peace, happiness, safety and plenty put YPO ahead of all aspirants from and geopolitical zones of Nigeria including Southwest.

The group under the leadership of Barrister (Hon.) Oladosu Oladipo, GCCF made this known at an emergency meeting held at No 12 Oladosu Oladipo Close New Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Monday, 11th April 2022 backed the interest of Professor Osinbajo to becoming the next Nigeria’s President.

The group believes that the declaration of the vice president to have a shot at 2023 presidency has opened the political space where true Patriots in the country would likely align with and vote for him in the 2023 Presidential Election regardless of any party affiliations.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the leader of the group, Barrister Oladipo said with the entry of Prof. Osinbajo into the presidential race, the Southwest’s chances to producing the next president has brighten.

Oladipo said, “Today, apart from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, we have had of other competent Yorubas like Dele Momodu, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Prof. Femi Olufunmilade and Governor Kayode Fayemi, who have declared their interest to govern Nigeria”.

He added, with the latest declaration of Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who he described as eminently qualified, “it is glaring that Yoruba is ready to lead the nation again”.

“Looking at his intellectual capability, comportment, loyalty and his engagement in national and international discourse, Osinbajo, no doubt is a round peg in a round hole”, the elderstateman said.

Oladipo also maintained that it is the turn of the south west to produce the next president of Nigeria, saying this would unify the entity called Nigeria.

“From objective analysis of our political history in Nigeria we originally had three regions that amalgamated to become the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and these are Western, Northern and Eastern regions. When this dispensation started in 1999, the western region produced the president, after him, the presidency moved to Umar Yar’Adua (a Northerner), who died after two years in power and succeeded by Goodluck Jonathan Easterner region). The power went back to the Northerner region again with the robust support of the Southwest for the election of President Mohammadu Buhari who is about to finish his eight years in office in 2023. To all right thinking democratic members of All Progressives Congress APC , fairness, equity, and good conscience, dictate that the process goes back to Southwest, where it started”, Oladipo explained.

According to the former presidential aspirant, the distintive competence and the nationwide popularity with his intellectual capability which nobody can doubt, or easily match plus the added Osinbajo’s delivery ability, practical ability of agility, mileabilty stands him out and very difficult to beat, by presidential aspirants from and poltical partyin the country today.

Responding to a question if Osinbajo’s interest to contest would not be seen as direct challenge to Tinubu’s presidential bid, Oladipo disagreed

He said, “Asiwaju Tinubu is our father, whether one likes it or not, he has virtually everthing in terms of knowledge, experience ability and he’s the national leader of All Progressives Congress and foremost leader with exchequer monumental achievements. He will work for the best in the circumstance.

He however maintained that before Osinbajo comes out at this late hour, somebody who can read between the lines must be able to have the premonition or complete understanding of the presumption that he is likely to be the one to continue from where President Mohammadu Buhari stops.

“In my candid opinion, this is continuity and reward for 100% loyalty, hardwork, thorough understanding of national issues vis-a-vis complexity, endowed abilities and the right temperaments to equitable, just and peaceful solution,” the elderstatesman concluded.

Nuhu-Aken'Ova:I'll restore Nigeria to the path of excellence, prosperity if I become the President

Mrs Cesnabmihilo Dorothy Nuhu-Aken'Ova is one of the leading presidential aspirants on the platform of Social Democratic Party. She has come a long way in service of the nation and humanity, having served in various leadership positions in some gender based organisations. In this interview, the she spoke among other issues, on the exact reason she wants to succeed President Mohammadu Buhari in 2023 and why she chose SDP as a platform to achieve her lifetime dream. Excerpt.

Why do you want to become the president of Nigeria?
I want to use what God has deposited in me through many years of learning and develppment opportunities, access to contacts, resources, and spaces that have built my conscience, wisdom, knowledge and skills, to restore Nigeria to the path of excellence, peace, security and prosperity.
I also believe that one of the most important reasons for my aspiration, at this time and season in our history, is to bring into use the very rare skills I have in leadership and ability to work simultaneously with diverse stakeholders, in challenging contexts, and on delicate and sensitive issues. I am aspiring because i have the required skills to bring the diverse interest groups to a rallying point so that together, we can build consensus and have a common vision. I am aspring because i want to facilitate the harnessing of the potential in our population size and diversity in order to expand access to opportunities and resources for nation building.
My aspiration is also aimed to bring my leadership skills and work expereince in the field of health, population and development, which put me at advantage because i recognise and know how to harness the resourcefulness, energy and zeal in our youths and to channel same towards peace, security and sustainable development.
With the love and compassion of a mother, I see what majority of Nigerians are seeing, and I feel what they are feeling. I am in a unique position to bring respite to Nigerians from the challenges that have encumbered us.

Since when have you been nursing this ambition to lead a nation where men dominate the political space?
This is in no way a personal ambition. It is a position of responsibility born from the vote of confidence reposed on me by my colleagues and fellows of the Connecting the Dots Institute. They invited me to run for this position. I accepted the invitation on 15th August 2021. Before then, I was comfortable working with about 15 other colleagues, mentoring women, youths, persons with disabilities and other marginalised populations, across sectors, in civic responsibility and political participation for social change. The mentorship process encouraged the mentees and the mentors to join partisan politics. I had no clue that this lot will fall on me until July 2021. I have pursued this assignment since 15th August, 2021.

Why did you choose Social Democratic Party as a platform to realise your ambition?
The Social Democratic Party was founded in 1989 and has mai tained its apeal to radical intellectuals, like my colleagues and I who believe in social justice and welfare for all. The SDP remains a force to reckon with serving as the third topmost alternative Party. While shopping for for a Party, we found out that those who are running the affairs of the Party are persons with high integrity, who served the country at various levels with clean records. Some of them, now elders, have been members of the SDP since it was founded in 1989, they have never crossed carpet. It shows that SDP is ideologically focused and remains a space for those who adhere to the ideology. This is why the SDP was credited by INEC for conducting the fairest primaries prior 2019 elections.
SDP is also adheres to the policy of inclusivity, a Party Constitutional provision deliberately put in place to enable eceryone to have access to the opportunities they offer. The policy provides free nomination forms for women and persons with disabilities and 50% reduction in cost for youths. Moreover, in November 2021 when i joined the Party, it was not crowded and there was room to showcase my potentials as i contributed to the visibilityof the Party and mobilization. It has been a mutually benefitting partnership for speedy growth for me and the Party.
Finally, the white horse is of utmost significance to me. It represents strength, speed, resilience, precision, excellence, royalty, grace, victory and most of all faithful and true.

Don't you feel intimidated contesting the ticket with male aspirants in your party?
No. I do not feel intimidated by anyone. I have a calling, an assignment, that is all I see, not men, not women, ... nothing but my assignment - Afterall, it is not the first time that I will be in a male dominated space. My family is full of males. In my primary school, most of my classmates were males. Some of the jobs i have done were male dominated. This is no exception. I will excel like I did in those other spaces.
