HOW TO MAKE AND PRESERVE ONIONS POWDER
*Making Onion Powder:*
1. *Choose the right onions:* Select sweet onions like Vidalia or Maui for a milder flavor.
2. *Peel and slice:* Peel and slice the onions thinly.
3. *Dehydrate:* Use a food dehydrator or your oven on the lowest temperature setting (150°F - 200°F) to dry the onions for 6-8 hours.
4. *Cool and grind:* Allow the dried onions to cool, then grind them into a fine powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
5. *Sift:* Sift the powder to remove any lumps or large particles.
*Preserving Onion Powder:*
1. *Airtight container:* Store the onion powder in an airtight container, like a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
2. *Cool, dark place:* Keep the container in a cool, dark place, like a pantry or cupboard.
3. *Use within 6 months:* For optimal flavor and aroma, use the onion powder within 6 months.
4. *Freeze for longer storage:* If you don't plan to use the onion powder within 6 months, consider freezing it. Simply transfer the powder to an airtight container or freezer bag and store it in the freezer for up to 1 year.
Tips:
- To enhance flavor, add a small amount of anti-caking agent like silicon dioxide or calcium silicate to the powder.
- Onion powder can be used as a seasoning in various dishes, like soups, stews, meat rubs, and sauces.
Remember to always handle onions safely and hygienically to avoid contamination and foodborne illness.
