Deputy Senate President, Oluwo Harps on Unity, Say Diversity Beauty of Nigeria

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi have harped on unity, saying the beauty and strength of the country is in her diversity.

Senator Barau on Tuesday hosted the Oluwo of Iwo, a first-class traditional ruler in Osun State, in his office at the National Assembly, Abuja.

While interacting, the duo said Nigerians irrespective of their places of origin, should promote unity and work for the development of the country.

Senator Barau described the role of traditional rulers in promoting unity as paramount to the peaceful coexistence and development of the country.

"Traditional rulers have key roles to play in national unity and development. As such, we implore them to always use every opportunity to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among all in the country. In and out of their domains, traditional rulers should continue to propagate the messages of unity, peace, and tolerance," he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the traditional ruler said diversity is the beauty of Nigeria.

"Diversity is the beauty of Nigeria. This is why we can boast of over 200m population. Only Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa cannot boast of this number. Unity is our pride. We will live together forever.

" That is why I married my wife from Kano, the Northern part of the country to promote national unity. We still need that unity and we will stay together forever and ever, " he said.

Commending the Deputy President of the Senate for his various intervention and empowerment programmes, he said he was endeared to Senator Barau by his leadership style.

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the pride of Lagos and the South, I pray Almighty God to make you the pride of Kano and the entire North," he said.

Married woman emerges as best-graduating medical student, bags 23 awards in Danfodiyo Varsity

Abdulrasheed Akere reports,

A 24-year-old lady, Sumayyah Abdallah has emerged as the best-graduating medical student of the 2022/2023 academic session and bagged twenty-three awards in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS).

Sumayyah was awarded and blessed with cash prizes at the medical students’ induction held at the university's auditorium on Saturday, December 09, 2023. She recalled that they're about 140 that started the academic journey far back in 2015 but only 79 were inducted into the medical profession as graduates.

This mother-of-one hails from Agaie, Niger state, and started her medical journey in December 2015 which is tantamount to eight years in December 2023. Aside from the honorary awards, she won more than four hundred thousand naira (N400,000) at the induction.

Dr Sumayyah got married in 2021 immediately after UG4 and gave birth about 3 weeks before the UG5 examinations. “Marriage affected my studies positively, it gave me more motivation and determinants than ever. It made me more focused on achieving my goals,” said Sumayyah.

For students pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, or MBBS, grades are used to measure their performance, not Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Sumayyah said she had so many good grades that made her deserve the feat. She expressed her excitement about the achievement, “Alhamdulillah, I feel really happy, seeing the smiles on my parents’ faces and their tears of joy is the most satisfying feeling in the whole wide world.”

I faced challenges — Dr Sumayyah

“I faced challenges but challenges are part of life, and we are not as perfect as the picture you see, I was scared at some point in time,” she said. Having a baby in medical school, especially while carrying the 9 months pregnant, and taking care of the child after delivery was strenuous for Sumayyah. This was because she had to read, go to lectures, and sit for many tests. While in fourth-year or 400-level, she wrote several C.A tests in a hospital bed.

Sumayyah almost gave up her dream to be a lifesaver or doctor due to entanglements but she sensed a reason to keep going. Her parents’ hard work, dedication, and unflinching support as well as her siblings’ encouragement to her are what always pushed her to never give up. “Thanks to my husband and my little Zayd too, we went through it all together.”

Avoid too many friends — Sumayyah advises undergraduates

Sumayyah advised undergraduates to stay humble, avoid overconfidence, and avoid too many friends. “What is worth doing is worth doing well. Most importantly, pray as if you’ve never read anything and read as if you’ve never prayed.”

Marriage is to enjoy, not endure - Ighalo’s estranged wife, Sonia spills why she left

Sonia Adesuwa, the estranged wife of Odion Jude Ighalo, has revealed what made her end her marriage with the former Super Eagles and Manchester United forward.

The mother of three made this known in a post on her Instagram page on Thursday and claimed that she left because she was tired of fighting and had to prioritise her children over her marriage.

Sonia also advised married women to become stronger self-advocates, while emphasizing that marriage is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.

Sonia wrote, "I also want to use this opportunity to encourage every woman out there. I read a few of your messages. Sis, let no one intimidate you, let no evil MIL control your home. Stand up for yourself and your children. Remember, Luke 10:19 says GOD has given us power to tread against scorpions and serpents.

"Be prayerful, trust me. If not for prayers and my boldness, I would have been forgotten by now. I chose to walk out of my marriage not because I was tired of fighting but because I chose my children over marriage. Remember, I got married at 19, and I invested so much in my marriage as a real African woman who would do anything to see her husband succeed.

"Flashback to when a famous Naija actress who married an Edo man came to the house in 2018. She called me aside and said, “Sonia, be very prayerful.

"Those who have the spirit to see beyond the physical would understand what she meant. I laughed, but within me, I said they cannot kill an ONLY CHILD who has an assignment on earth. I hear people saying she’s pained and broke bla bla bruh, go ask them, I was born with a SILVERSPOON."

She also revealed that she would open a platform to encourage women having issues with their marriage.

"I promise to open a platform in the future to help and encourage women who are going through hell in their marital home. They need to speak up. Remember, marriage is to enjoy, not to endure. Thanks once again for your kind words and prayers. God bless you all.”

The Iwo Central Mosque represents a symbolic epoch in the history of Islam in Iwo land.

Some 600 years ago, Islam was introduced to Iwo land. The then Oluwo embraced the religion of Islam and ordered all ‘magajis’ and ‘baales’ (chiefs) to also accept the religion. Consequently, the Iwo Central Mosque was brought to life.

One interesting thing about the mosque apart from its long history is that it was built on the relics of deities. It is perhaps the only mosque with such structural history in the whole of Yorubaland. The mosque was erected on the shrine of the Babalorisa (Chief Priest) of Iwoland after the deities were dismantled.

Though the mosque wears a traditional architectural look given that it was built long ago, it remains one of the biggest and largest mosques in South-West Nigeria.

Investigations by Muslim News also revealed that the mosque which was built some 600 years ago, got upgraded to the present state in 1963 according to many sources.

In his efforts to rejuvenate Islam in the city, the present Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Rasheed Akanbi, has ordered the total reconstruction of the Iwo Central Mosque to suit the taste of modernity. He would be taking the lead in this exercise as the Ameerul Mumineen of Iwoland.

If this reconstruction bid is achieved, the Iwo Central Mosque would become one of the finest, biggest and largest mosques in South-West Nigeria. The construction of the masjid (house of Allah) is one of the most rewarding acts in Islam. The general public is hereby urged to be a part of this exercise.

POLICE COMMENDS POLICE INSPECTOR FOR PROFESSIONALISM, POSITIVE REPRESENTATION

Charges Officers to Emulate Good Conduct, Be Worthy Ambassadors

The Nigeria Police Force has commended a female Police Officer, Inspector Justina Rita Omogbai, attached to the Traffic Unit of the Sabo Divisional Headquarters in Lagos State, for her commitment and acts of professionalism displayed in the course of her traffic duties and for positively representing the Force amongst the community, particularly to school children crossing the road at her duty post, by taking personal steps to ensure they are properly dressed and safe while heading to and from school.

The NPF noted that her gesture aligns with the Community Policing tenets and the concept of “Catching Them Young”, as the formative age is very vital to training children to be law-abiding and compliant with regulations; and her singular action brings to their memories the standard practice of Nigeria Police Traffic Officers.

While commending the officer, the Inspector-General of Police charged all officers and men to emulate her good conduct and be shining examples in their respective jurisdictions. He equally tasked officers to be law-abiding even as they sow the seed of appropriate civic behaviour in the minds and hearts of members of their communities, particularly the young ones, who can serve as evangelists of values and good potentials of the NPF contrary to the present erroneous perception.

Nollywood actor, Yomi Gold, has said that his marriage to his wife, Amina, has crashed.

He got married to Amina in January 2022.

The actor revealed the marriage crash via his Instagram account on Tuesday, saying that his estranged wife is a good person, who deserves someone better than him.

He said, "Me and Meenah decided to go our separate ways. I want all our families, friends, fans to understand. This is no time to judge anyone. When love dies in a relationship. No one should force it. I want to use this time to thank everyone who has been very concerned and supportive.

Missing govt asset: Osun Senator, Oriolowo demands public apology

Senator Adelere Oriolowo has debunked allegations that he illegally took possession of items belonging to the Osun State Government.

Oriolowo, who is the Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, described the allegations as a blatant falsehood, a naked display of recklessness, sacrilegious dereliction of truth and unjustifiable character assassination.

While denying the allegations in Iwo on Monday, the Senator also demanded the State government to apologise in written form and also to pay five hundred million Naira as compensation for the unquantifiable damage done to his name and integrity.

DAILY POST recalls that the Asset Review Committee headed by Bashiru Tokunbo Salam had in a report indicated that Senator Adeleke Oriolowo was in custody of 130G Motor Grader (005132-A321), D6 Bulldozer (OS130-A32), Electric Transformer Feeder Board Panel and Soil Compactor Machine (OS137- A32).

The panel, which was set up by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, also demanded that the Senator return the said equipment to the State government or face sanctions.

Oriolowo, who maintained the allegation has caused so much damage to his name, reputation and legacy stated that, “since the publication, many well- meaning people within and outside the shores of Nigeria have continuously reached out to me for clarification and solidarity.

“I was taken aback as to why a committee of the State would jettison the principle of fair hearing by inviting me to defend whatever report they must have gotten. I also reliably gathered that this said committee failed to submit their report to their principal before going to the public to malign my name.

“The said equipment which belongs to the then OSSADEP was in existence when I left the agency 15 years ago. To the best of my knowledge, some of them were transferred to the Ministry of Rural Development to assist the government. A simple due diligence or investigation by the committee would have unraveled the salient fact that the equipment is still property of the Osun State Government.”

Senator Oriolowo while revealing that his letter has been received by the Osun State Government, expressed the hope that steps would be taken to retract the publication and an apology tendered to him.

He also warned that failure to do so would leave him with no alternative than to resort to legal means to get justice.

He held that the decision of Governor Adeleke being a former Senator to surround himself with sycophants instead of playing by the rules and hitting the ground running may spell doom for his teething administration
