The Academic Staff Union of the University is set to hold a quarterly National Executive Council meeting at the University of Calabar on Sunday.

A member of the NEC confirmed this to our correspondent on Saturday in Abuja.

“There is a quarterly NEC and it’s for the fourth quarter. Lots of issues will come up and definitely, the issue of withheld and amputated salaries will come up.

The national president of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, could not be immediately reached for comments on the matter.

The PUNCH reports that After ASUU suspended its strike on 14 October, the lecturers were paid a ‘mutilated’ salary for the month, and the remaining months’ salaries withheld.
The Federal Government said the payment was on a pro-rata basis as the union only suspended their strike two weeks into the month. But ASUU protested, accusing the government of casualising the work of the academics.

Despite protests and the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the executive arm of government has insisted it would not shift grounds on implementing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

The Federal Government said the payment was on a pro-rata basis as the union only suspended their strike two weeks into the month. But ASUU protested, accusing the government of casualising the work of the academics.

Despite protests and the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the executive arm of government has insisted it would not shift grounds on implementing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.
The decision of the government to withhold the salaries of lecturers had led to a series of protests across the country with some branches of the union calling for the sack of the minister of education, Adamu Adamu and the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige.

However, the union confirmed that its members received full salaries for the month of November 2022.

University lecturers under ASUU of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik) protest against salaries.
December 2nd,2022.

The aggrieved lecturers barricaded the Enugu-Onitsha throughway in Awka, the nation capital in protest towards the 1/2 salaries they obtained in October after they known as off the strike.

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14 over the government's failure to meet its needs such as elevated funding for tertiary institutions in the country.

The Federal authorities throughout the ASUU strike that lasted for eight months maintained that it will put in force the “No work, no pay” police on the lecturers but at the negotiation which led the stop of the strike following the intervention of the Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the authorities reportedly promised to pay the lecturers for the strike period.

However, in October after the strike used to be called off, contributors of ASUU were paid half salaries, counting from the day the industrial action ended. This has considering that generated some other warmth as the aggrieved lecturers have been threatening to embark on sit-at-home or embark on some other indefinite strike.

On Thursday, members of the UNIZIK chapter of ASUU gathered at the Union Secretariat from the place they moved down to the University gate by using the Enugu-Onitsha highway and barricaded the busy street for some minutes while they expressed their grievance over the authorities action.

The protesting lecturers carried placards with a number inscriptions which includes “Nigerian professors’ salaries are much less than 500 dollars”, “No to commercialisation of Nigerian public Universities”, “Stop casualisation of Nigerian academics'', amongst others.
