Wale Olomu Memorial Awards - WOMA

Wale Olomu Memorial Awards - WOMA WOMA is in memory of an enterprising reporter & editor who had an uncommon reportorial philosophy.

The Wale Olomu Memorial Awards (WOMA) is set up in the memory of a young Nigerian journalist who, until his death at the age of 30 in 1994, embraced with a crusading tenacity the reportorial philosophy that was uncommon and remarkable amongst his peers. His philosophy was driven by a fervent desire to unearth, appreciate and promote the works and efforts of people least recognised nor appreciated

by the vast majority of the Nigerian entertainment reportorial corps of his day. Wale Olomu was a remarkably diligent, enterprising and energetic entertainment reporter and editor who worked with the Daily Times, Republic Newspapers, Vintage People and FAME weekly magazines between 1986 and 22 December, 1994, when he transited, after a brief illness. WOMA is a non-competitive reward concept which has set for itself a rigorous process of identifying, selecting and recognising the immeasurable and inspirational dedication, expertise and talents of men and women who have devoted decades to the enthronement of positive and aspirational values and legacies in the Nigerian music industry. Awards are presented in two broad categories: Lifetime Achievement Awards & Special Recognition Awards.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: BUSINESS OF MUSIC - ARTISTES VS LABEL RELATIONS, ETC:

LAOLU AKINS: Everyone needs to understand that recording companies are investors. Artistes themselves are investors in some way…. We no longer have an industry.

When in agreement you have to play your part. Artistes do not want to find out much about what is going on…. The issues are based on misunderstanding of the responsibilities they have.

KENNY SAINT BEST: We at Kenny's Music did not have any issues. We schooled our artistes on contractual agreement. We always insisted they came with their lawyers.

As many of them had a good relationship, Kenny Ogungbe still maintains a good relationship with his artistes.

Artistes are insecure. They sign with you, and then through another marketing company. He (Kenny Ogungbe) did not bring any issues to the media.

AKINS: Not every artiste will become a success overnight. Everyone needs to understand their roles.

WOMA-R FINALE (23RD DEC, 2023)
-
FAJ: This is "Reminiscences: The Wale Olomu I Remember". What kind of person was Wale as a friend, and a would-be husband at that time?

TAIBAT ADEBISI YUSSUF (Fiancee): There is one word I will use in describing him, which is an angel in human form. He is always a friend, a brother and a
lover.

He has kept a high standard of relationship. It was a good experience for me. He was a family to all my families.

He was the reason why I moved to the UK… I couldn't be myself in Nigeria without him. I am happy now that we are looking back and smiling.

FAJ: How did you react on the day of his death?

YUSUF: I will never forget that day. I was working in the bank. I didn't know he had passed.

I was told to rest (after coming from his bedside the day before). My brother knew and he told others not to allow me to see him at the hospital.

I went home. The next day whilst at work, I didn't know he had passed, until my (other) brother came to tell me, 'Uncle Wale is dead'. He didn't know I was unaware.

I fainted. It was like a dream to me. They took me to a room and poured water on me. Later I was taken home.

FAJ: What do you think about the memorial award that has been ongoing for three weeks?

YUSUF: I am very grateful. He was passionate about work. Thank you so much for what you have all done.

FAJ: What is the most striking thing you remember about Wale?

EKUNDAYO ASAJU: The Wale I knew was humble, disciplined, caring and intelligent. Wale knew what he wanted, and went for what he wanted at a young age.

FAJ: Did you notice any strange habits he had?

EKUNDAYO ASAJU: Wale was strict. At a point in time, when there was piracy, Wale actually practiced what he did….

FAJ: What thoughts are going through your mind as we continue to give out these awards?

ASAJU: Wale led a good life. One is not too surprised with what is happening now. I thank the organizers, particularly my boss.

I want to use this occasion to call everyone to always remember those that have made their impact in the past….
