MEMORANDA SUBMISSION FOR STATE POLICE
BY GOVERNORS IS A WASTE OF TIME - MAKINDE

Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has described the submission of memoranda by state governors for state police as a waste of time.

Governor Makinde who stated this in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, faulted the 16 governors’ submission of a report on the matter to the National Economic Council (NEC).

LEADERSHIP recalls that NEC recently confirmed receiving memoranda from 16 governors who expressed their support for establishing state police.

The governors said state police would address the myriads of security challenges facing the nation.

However, 20 other governors were yet to forward their reports to enable the NEC to act on them.

In a swift reaction, Governor Makinde who said that he did not submit any memorandum on State Police said the submission was a waste of time.

“I did not submit any memorandum to state police. But my position is very clear about state police. I see it, quite frankly, as a waste of our time.

“I did not submit, not because of arrogance but because I don’t think the approach will quickly get us to where we want to go. You are asking the states to submit memoranda on how state police will work,” Makinde said.

The Oyo State governor said the issue of the state police could best be handled by the National Assembly and not the National Economic Council or the National Security Adviser.

He argued that the issue must pass through the parliament since it is a constitutional matter before being replicated at the state houses of assembly.

The governor said: “The National Assembly, they know what to do. They have people that can quickly do this work. It is not the National Security Adviser or the National Economic Council that will deal with the issue of state police.

“It is a constitutional thing and should go to the National Assembly. Then, at the state level, we get our state houses of assembly to pass this law,” Makinde said.

IBADAN MARKETS TO BE SHUT, AS FIDAU OF LATE OLUBADAN HOLDS FRIDAY

The Babaloja General of Oyo state, Alhaji Yekeen Abass has announced the closure of some markets in Ibadan, the state capital, as the 8th day Fidau of late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun holds on Friday.

He made this known in a statement made available to newsmen.

Announcing on behalf of market leaders and elders, the Babaloja General said it is important market men and women give honour to the late Olubadan in remembrance of the roles he played in the development of Ibadanland.
He said markets at Oje, Beere, Gate, Ojaaba, Idi Arere and Bodija will be closed on 22nd March, 2024.

Alhaji Abass condoled with Governor Seyi Makinde, the Ali Iwo family, sons and daughters of Ibadan and the state in general.

BREAKING: Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, Dies At 82

The 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan Land, HRM Oba Mohood Olalekan Balogun, is dead. He was aged 82.

According to a local newspaper in Oyo State, the first-class monarch died at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan a few hours after he was admitted into the tertiary health facility on Thursday evening.

Oyo State governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, it was learnt, would be briefed about the development any moment from now.

Born in 1942, Oba Balogun, who was a Fourth Republic Senator, represented Oyo Central senatorial district between 1999 and 2003.

He ascended the throne on March 11, 2022, after the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Oguguniso III. Adetunji, 93, had died on January 2, 2022, after reigning from March 4, 2016.

With the unique succession system of Olubadan stool, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the current Balogun Olubadan of Ibadan, who is next in line, will be officially announced after the traditional 21 days of mourning, as the next Olubadan of Land.

Olakom Radiotv Ibadan News Corner: NIGERIA REOPENS LAND AND AIR BORDERS WITH NIGER REPUBLIC

President Bola Tinubu has issued orders for the reopening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger, alongside the removal of other sanctions against the country, effective immediately.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled 'Nigeria opens land and air borders with Republic of Niger, lifts other sanctions,' President Tinubu's directives also include the lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea.

This move follows the recent decision by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja, where economic and travel sanctions on Niger, Mali, and Guinea were lifted.

In alignment with ECOWAS leaders' decisions, President Tinubu has instructed the immediate lifting of various sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger, including:

- Reopening of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, as well as lifting the ECOWAS no-fly zone on commercial flights to and from Niger Republic.
- Resuming all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, including service transactions and utility services.
- Unfreezing of assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and commercial banks, including those of state enterprises and parastatals.
- Ending the suspension of Niger from financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions such as EBID and BOAD.
- Lifting travel bans on government officials and their family members from Niger.

SENATE SUSPENDS NINGI FOR THREE MONTHS

The Senate has suspended Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP – Bauchi Central) over his claim that the National Assembly padded the 2024 budget with a whooping sum of N3tn.

He was suspended at the plenary session held on Tuesday, March 12th at the Red Chamber.

The session was presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

He lamented that the integrity of the Senate has been totally damaged.

The United Kingdom has banned Health and Care Workers from bringing dependants to the country.
This was made known by the UK Home Office via its verified X handle (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
"From today, care workers entering the UK on Health and Care Worker visas can no longer bring dependants.

TROOST-EKONG REVEALS 2 PLAYERS BEHIND DECISION NOT TO QUIT SUPER EAGLES

Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong has named two Super Eagles players behind his decision not to quit playing for the national team.

Troost-Ekong, who won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Player of the Tournament, said he received advice from fellow Super Eagles teammates Alex Iwobi and Leon Balogun, encouraging him not to retire from international football prior to the tournament in Ivory Coast.

The 30-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the Super Eagles final squad to the tournament considering the fact that he had not played for the national team for over a year.

Speaking recently with CNN World Sport’s Amanda Davies, the PAOK star said his discussions with Iwobi and Balogun prompted him to reflect on his early days with the Super Eagles and the pride he felt when he made his debut under the late Stephen Keshi.

“I spoke with some of the players I have been with [in the national team] for a long time. For example Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun,” the former Watford star said.

“They all said that they thought it would be a real shame. They felt I still have a lot to give, which made me think about my younger self [When I first made my debut for the team]. It gives my younger self a better end.”

“So that was what changed my mind really.”
