2017-2020 was all the social media rave about giveaways. Giveaway wan mad Instagram vendors and followers πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

It was also when I decided to stop being a passive Instagram user all so I could win one or two giveaways.

On one of those days, there was a social media account that belonged to a guy who seemingly sold iPhones (*seemingly being the keyword here). His page had hundreds of photos of iPhones, phone accessories and even a video of a lady who won an iPhone from his store.

This guy was hosting a giveaway on his page. He asked his followers to invite their friends to follow his page. Whoever had the highest number of tags on the giveaway post would win an iPhone from his shop πŸ™„πŸ™„

If something is too good to be true, then it's definitely too good to be true πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜….

We all went to work. Everybody was inviting their friends to go follow the guy on IG. I was not left out πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜….

At the end of the day, the guy singled one person out and sent 3k worth of airtime to him because he had the highest number of tags on the giveaway post.

He then went ahead to tell us that he had decided to give the rest of us another chance. We were to keep inviting people to follow his page and he would announce the name of the iPhone winner the next day.

With our fingers crossed, we all went back to work πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜….

Well, the next day he refused to mention the name of the iPhone winner. He said he'd contact them privately in their inbox. I was one of those he contacted.

Lucky me !!! Or so I thought ! πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

He told me that I would have to pay the delivery fee for the iPhone. I was skeptical at first but just like Eve, the prospect of owning an Apple iPhone was too juicy to ignore πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… (pun intended πŸ˜…).

The delivery would cost 2800 Naira. I paid for this and watched to see what would happen.

Towards evening, I checked the page, the guy had changed his IG username and made all the posts on his page to disappear πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚, I swear for am tire πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Last time I checked the dm was in 2020, and he had changed it to a different username. I asked him to stop scamming people and he blocked me πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

I'm laughing about it now, it wasn't funny then. I'm pretty sure he did the same thing to every single person who commented on that giveaway post.

So I'm sure he changed his username so he'd do it to other unsuspecting people.

Now that I think about it, I laugh at myself and also call myself a scammer in disguise because why did I believe that anyone would give away a brand new iPhone 11 for free ?!!!!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

What am I driving at with this post ?

If you're going to buy stuff on IG, you might want to find out if you're chatting with a scammer.

The first thing to do would be to go to their profile and click on the three dots at the upper right corner of your screen.

An array of options should come up. Click on 'About this account'. It'll show you when the account was created and how many times the vendor has changed their username.

Somebody who's a scammer would likely post a lot of pictures in one day. They'd create an account today and post 100 pictures of their goods that same day so that the account looks convincing and old.

Secondly, a scammer would have changed their username 10-21 times β˜ΊοΈπŸ˜…β˜ΊοΈπŸ˜….

This also comes as a warning to vendors...try not to change your username incessantly. Find something that works and stick to it. If you don't, you're harming your brand.

People are armed with this knowledge now and nobody wants to patronize somebody who's changed their usernames more than thrice.

I hope this helps somebody out there.

See ya tomorrow ☺️

I love shopping online. Infact I could say that it has become a favourite pastime of mine. πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

When I tell you that a huugggeee chunk of business transactions is now done on Facebook and Instagram, you best believe it because it's true.

I love everything about Gombe except for two things

1. The town is too small πŸ˜‚

2. Having lived in Aba for a few years where you can buy anything - including human head (according to my mum πŸ˜…), you can't buy everything here in Gombe πŸ₯Ί. Even if you could, it'll definitely look like a caricature of the specific thing you're buying in the South.

For example, I don't want to remember what the first autogele I bought in Gombe looked like πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

So what do I do when I have searched the offline/physical market for something and can't seem to find it there ?

I pick up my phone and type these into the search box on Facebook....

'autogele vendors in Gombe'

'bigfeet shoe seller in Gombe'

For Instagram, I use hashtags to find the things I need

For Google, I type these queries into the search box :

'Bigfeet shoe seller near me', 'autogele maker near me,'

These queries pull up a number of results that may or may not bring my search to an end.

If I find what I am looking for, I reach out to the vendor that's selling what I want via the contact information they have provided.

I go ahead to choose the stuff I want to buy, I pay them and then have the stuff delivered to me in 3-5 days.

We become besties πŸ˜…

Rachel's happy. Vendor's happy and all is right in the world ! 😊

What is it that I'm trying to tell you on this post ???

When you post the things you're selling online, use hashtags that are relevant to whatever it is you're selling, they'll help people around your area find you faster and patronize you.

It improves your chances of being discovered by people who live in your area but are not your social media followers.

Use the hashtags on your profiles as well.

Make sure you set up a Google Business Profile (Google My Business) for your business so that people who search for 'autogele maker in Gombe' on Google will see your profile on Google My Business and reach out to you instantaneously ! It's totally free and hassle-free to set up !

I hope this helps somebody out there !

See you tomorrow 😊

Having a website plays a very vital role in the digital age of business and marketing. Here are some key reasons why it is important for your business to have a website.

1. Online presence
Having a website gives your business an online presence, making it accessible to people all over the world. It allows potential customers to find you anytime, anywhere, thereby increasing your reach and visibility.

2. Credibility and trust
A website that is professionally and specifically designed for you and for your business inspires trust and credibility. It is the first place that potential customers go to learn about your business products or services. I had my own website designed by Jimol Technologies and you can see how very easy it is to navigate and how beautiful it looks by clicking the link on my bio 😍😘.

3. Information Hub
Your website serves as a central hub of information about your business. It should carry info about your products, services, contact information, pricing and customer reviews so that it'll be easy for visitors to learn about what you're offering.

4. Marketing and branding
Think of your website as your digital marketing headquarters. You can use it to tell your brand story, engage with your target audience through content marketing (videos, podcasts and write-ups) and establish a unique identity in the market. It also provides a platform for content marketing such as blogging which can help and attract your target audience and also serve as additional source of income.

5. Customer convenience
Having a website offers convenience to your customers. They should be able to explore your products, make purchases using their credit cards or reach out to you from the comfort of their homes.

6. Competitive edge
Many people who do the same thing that you do are already online, so when you don't have a website, it keeps them ahead of you. A website that is optimised helps you stand out, compete fairly and effectively, and capture your share of the digital market.

7. Insights and analytics
Websites can provide valuable data through tools like Google analytics. With this tool and others like it, you can track user behaviour, preferences and shopping habits which will help you make informed decisions by a long shot and fine tune your marketing strategies as well.

8. Customer support
Websites offer various ways to communicate with customers and hasten your customer support efforts. Features like chatbots, live chat and FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) make it easier for customers to get the help they desire.

10. Scalability
As your business grows, your business can grow with it. I can add new features and functionalities to meet changing needs.

Having a website isn't just about keeping up with the times; it's about striving in the digital landscape.

If you don't have one yet, it's time to consider the incredible benefits it can bring to your business. Let me know if you have any questions about getting started on your digital journey.

Lastly, if you need a website, contact Nwaogu Honest Jimoh . He did the incredible job of designing a website for me two years ago, and I can tell you that it is so worth it !!

You don't have to wait for good or bad publicity to come to you before you milk it for what it's worth πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

You can also wait for it to come to people who are undeserving of the press they're getting and then grab the opportunity to blow on a global scale (the world is now more connected than ever, thanks to social media).

Barely 24 hours after ERISCO Foods set Naija social media space abuzz with news of their epic PR fiasco, a company has gone right ahead to run Facebook ads to promote their ready-to-eat stew product.

While ERISCO Foods went right ahead and bungled the free publicity they got, this company leveraged it to promote their very unique product (a good idea in this 'SAPAcious' era).

If you're going to run a business in this social media era, your PR game needs to hit the bull's eye else you'll become an epic social media PR blunder anecdote for years to come.

Ciao 😘

The ability to handle constructive and destructive criticism is a superpower every business owner should aspire to possess.

In my last two posts, I talked about customer experience, and how it is the perception that somebody has of your brand.

The experience one customer has of your product is going to be entirely different from the experience another customer has of the same product.

You're good to go if a huge chunk of your customer base agrees that your product is worth more than one trial. But if a huge percentage of your customer base says otherwise, you just have to collect realistic feedback from them, analyze the problems that are similar to each other, find solutions to them, and everybody goes home happy.

The attached photo is that of a customer giving her review of ERISCO FOODS' packaged tomato product.

It's not unlawful to give a review but that was a wrong way to do it.

ERISCO Foods found her review/comment very damaging to their brand and then sued her for trying to sabotage the brand...

That was also a wrong move 😊.

When you're dissatisfied with the goods and services you're getting, the first thing you need to do is to find out if the brand you just patronized has a customer service helpline.

If they do, call them on phone and lay your complaints there. Don't do to somebody what you won't want anybody else to do to you by trying to destroy their hard work. A lot of work goes into building a business and no one deserves to have their business talked about in such a distasteful manner.

In this lady's case, her taste buds told her that the tomato product contains excessive sugar, she should have called ERISCO Foods and told them just that.

On the part of the company, they need to take a cue from the guidebook of big brands because I'm wondering if they're planning to sue every customer that gives a negative review about their product.

When something like this that draws widespread negative attention and scrutiny to the brand happens, a good PR move would be to tender their unreserved apology and promise to look into the sugar situation in the tomato.

If they're able to find out why the tomato product tastes too sugary and they fix it, they can follow this up by sending a carton of the same product to this lady and have her talk about it on social media as well. This is a good PR move, and it might earn them new customers.

It is important to always ask your customers to leave good and bad reviews on things they buy from you. It will help you know what to fix before another customer complains about it again.

In digital marketing, not every publicity is good publicity. It is how well you manage the publicity you get that determines if milking it will produce positive results.

ERISCO Foods failed it. I hope they nail it next time. That's if they're not canceled already 😬.

Dearest Digital Bestie,

Last week, the internet was abuzz with excitement and call it what you may, dismay at the news of Jimmy Odukoya becoming the senior pastor of Fountain of Life Church in the wake of his father's demise.

They feel that Jimmy who doubles as a pastor and a Nollywood actor (more recently, Hollywood) should not have been bestowed with such a hallowed position, given his rugged physical appearence and erotic movie scenes.

What people do not know is that the church, for most people, is a business.

What people do not know, is that Jimmy Odukoya has a degree in business administration (Are you connecting the dots now, or do I have to spell it out for you ? πŸ˜…)

What people do not know is that this is Influencer Marketing at work 😊

There's no way that Jimmy is the most qualified or most anointed to be the senior pastor.

Usually, when a founding father of a church dies, the flock scatters. So the elders of the church nominating Jimmy...a popular actor with a degree in B.A., and lastly, the icing on the top of the cake, he being the son of the late founding father of the church is influencer marketing at work.

They chose a popular person to be the face of the brand, err...church, so that the church doesn't scatter as is expected in the wake of such unfortunate circumstances.

If he's the senior pastor, the church is more likely to gain more members, ergo more tithes and offerings to pay the salaries of workers and foot the bills incurred as a result of running such an organization.

And have you seen Jimmy Speak ?!!! Jeez, he's a great orator. He clearly learned a lot from his parents, and I'm sure the women in the church do not mind a little biceps πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

So the rest of the world can take a chill pill and cut him some slack.

I'll see you tomorrow 😊

Dearest Digital Bestie,

As is expected, people now shop on their phones.

And why not ? The average person spends five hours a day on their phones. Because of this, millions of transactions take place on social media everyday.

A very important aspect of brand building and digital marketing which is often overlooked by start-up brands in Nigeria is Customer Experience.

What does customer experience mean to you?

In simple terms, Customer Experience is the perception that your customer has of your Brand from the moment that they first said hello as a way of inquiring about your products and services to the moment that you hand those products over to them.

It is the impression they have of the service you deliver to them.

In brand building, excellent customer experience is one of the tenets of establishing a great and memorable brand as demonstrated in the brand building strategy guide on our website.

It falls to you as a business owner to shape your customers' perception of you. So, how can a start-up brand make the customer experience memorable ?

1. Greet your customers politely when they're in your inbox inquiring about the goods and services you sell.

2. Be cheerful in your dealings with them. This actually gives them a gentle psychological nudge to buy from you even if you don't have what they want. Don't over do it though πŸ˜…

3. Update them on the progress of their dealings with you. If you encounter a problem, be sure to let them know. Try to proffer solution s to the problem at hand.

4. Be honest. Ensure that what they're paying for is what they're getting. Don't allow them to pay for one thing and then go ahead to offer something different to them at the last minute.

5. Keep in touch until the product they're buying is safely in their care. It says a lot about you as a person and as a brand. It's not enough to send those products out and forget about the customers simply because their money is taking a deep breath in your bank account.

It also isn't okay to not ask a customer if they got their products or not. Whether or not they reach out to you, please reach out to them to ask if they received it. This will earn you points for future purposes. You'll come to mind when they need that stuff you're selling.

6. Never call out a customer on social media. Always sort things out privately. If you encounter a difficult customer that is worth more trouble than the money they're bringing in, be kind with your words, apologize where necessary and offer to give them a full or partial refund of their money if the situation calls for it.

7. Follow-up is important. You need to ensure that they love what they got from you. You also need to ensure that they know how to use it or how to set it up for use. This will definitely turn those first time customers into returning customers, and will definitely earn you referrals.

8. Even if they make inquiries and don't buy whatever they're asking about, do not call them out on social media. A lot of people do this. This is not advisable. You're shooting yourself in the foot and chasing your potential customers away.

One of the best things that I enjoy about working for my boss is the fact that I get to learn new things every single time.

My boss is the kind of person who isn't just in business to make profit, but to create memorable experiences for the clients that use our services.

Every single time that my boss sees something that will improve the business or make it look good, he asks me to research that particular thing and then he tasks me to talk about it at our weekly virtual meetings.

(Hey Rachel, could you please look this up and update me at our next meeting, please ? Thank you πŸ™πŸΎ) πŸ˜…

It made me realize that the business, for him, isn't just about making money; it's about leaving a lasting impression on the clients we help every day. Every single decision that he makes for the business is about how to ensure its sustainability not just in the future, but also in the long run.

Our business is people/client-centred and we know that we're doing a good job when our clients are happy with the services that we provide and how we provide these services to them.

If there is a new trend in the digital marketing space or a trend that we could apply to our business to help it grow even by the tiniest percentage, my boss would ask me to make research about it. If it proves valuable, we go right ahead to incorporate it into our marketing efforts and watch for results.

In doing this repetitiously, I developed a passion for watching businesses take root and flourish πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

This is why I have put together this list of digital marketing trends for 2023, to help business owners in the online space leverage the power of digital marketing to grow their businesses.

I don't want you to see that business as your meal ticket. Yes it is, but I want you to also see that business as a way for you to leave a lasting impression in the minds of your customers and, in doing so, make your brand the next big thing to come out of the internet.

You think you're doing okay because your numbers are pretty big, but wait till you read my blogpost and see that you could do better than you're already doing πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

Dearest digital bestie, today I’m sharing a short story on how to create a memorable brand!

So, there’s this business owner I know. She’s a food vendor in my side of town.

Before she launched her business, she took to Facebook to create awareness about the foods that she would be offering on her menu.

Each time that she made a post, she would hype the living daylights out of herself, her name, her business and the food she would sell. I observed her, she did this consistently for days on end. I was impressed and was among the first people to patronize her business repeatedly.

Each time that I craved the particular food she cooked that I love, she always came to mind because she did a very good job of consciously and intentionally creating a brand that burned itself into my mind.

Where am I going with this story about how to create a memorable brand?

I recently had a baby and...
