Ukraine is pushing to strengthen alliances with African countries

Ukraine is pushing to strengthen its alliances with African countries through an expansion of its grain shipments program, roughly doubling its embassies in Africa, and President Volodymr Zelenskyy making his first state visit to the continent in the coming months.

Now in the third year of a brutal war following a full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, Ukraine faces an existential battle to build geopolitical ties globally as its key ally in the United States wavers in its support.

The move to ramp up the grain program coincides with broader moves to foster closer ties with African nations.

A Ukrainian government spokesperson had revealed that plans are on the way for the country to expand its diplomatic reach, with Kyiv intending to double its 12 embassies in Africa by adding between 10 and 12 more this year.

It comes amid news of the Ukrainian president’s plans to visit the continent.

“In the next few months, I believe President Zelenskyy will be coming to South Africa because he’d like to strengthen and expand the engagement,” South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said during an event last week in Washington D.C. at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank.

to the Bariba people of Benin 🇧🇯

The Bariba ethnic group, also known as the Baatombu is one of the major ethnic groups in Benin Republic, comprising about 9% of the total population.

They are found to be inhabiting the northeastern region of Benin, where they are concentrated especially around the city of Nikki, which is considered the traditional capital of the Bariba people.

The Bariba people, just like other major tribes, engage in agricultural activities as their primary occupation, growing crops like rice, cotton, cassava (tapioca), yams, beans, palm oil, peanuts with some poultry and livestock.

One of their noted festivals is the annual Gani festival of which horse riding is a prominent element. Religion plays an important role in Bariba tribes and they are primarily Islamic. However, a number of Bariba communities have their own indigenous beliefs.

Kuda expands internationally with new payment licenses in Tanzania 🇹🇿 and Canada

Kuda Technologies, the Nigerian-based parent company of Kuda Microfinance Bank, has recently obtained payment licenses in Tanzania and Canada. This significant achievement paves the way for the company to expand its presence across the African and global markets.

One of the licenses will enable the African neobank to offer remittance and multi-currency wallet services to Africans residing in Canada.

The Tanzanian Payment Service Provider (PSSP) will also witness the challenger bank extending comparable services to its customers in the East African country, as part of its additional license.

After successfully establishing a presence in the Tanzanian and Canadian markets, Kuda is poised to take on other African-focused fintech startups, including LemFi, Eversend, and Nala, as it operates as a global neobank serving the African diaspora.

@ the Khomani Cultural Landscape in South Africa 🇿🇦

The ǂKhomani Cultural Landscape coincides with the boundaries of South Africa’s Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, located in the extreme northwest of the country, bordering Namibia 🇳🇦 and Botswana 🇧🇼.

Designated as a cultural landscape, the site includes landmarks of ǂKhomani-San history, migration, livelihoods, memory and resources.

The Khomani San descend directly from an ancient population that lived in southern Africa 150 000 years ago. This same group of people are believed to be among the ancestors of human beings.

They have played a huge role in getting their area inscribed as a world heritage site.

The Khomani Cultural Landscape reflects the Khomani and related San people's ethos of living lightly on the land and seeing themselves as part of nature, in a landscape where a respectful relationship between humans, plants, and animals connects them to this land in a unique way that epitomises sustainability.

The Khomani Cultural Landscape was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.

March 29

On this day in 1979, Idi Amin Dada fled towards his tribal homeland of Kakwa as his jackboot absolutist rule over Uganda began to wane.

In 1971, General Idi Amin overthrew the elected government of Milton Obote and declared himself president of Uganda, where he led a tough eight-year regime.

At a time, his expulsion of all Indian and Pakistani citizens, along with increasing military expenditure was said to have brought about the country’s economic decline, the impact of which lasted decades.

The powers of the "great" Idi Amin was demystified in 1979 when Ugandans exiled and neighbouring Tanzanians took over control of the capital of Kampala, forcing him to flee.

Never brought to justice for his vices as alleged, Idi Amin lived out the remainder of his life in Saudi Arabia.

Africa has become the solution to the UK's elderly care crisis, the trends have shown.

The number of Africans entering Britain as care workers nearly trebled over the last year after visa rules were changed to tackle staff shortages exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit. It highlights the West’s growing reliance on migrants from the world’s youngest continent to care for its aging populations.

Africans now make up the majority of foreigners given the right to work in Britain’s care system. Some 57,000 Africans entered the country on a Health and Care visa in 2023 — up from just over 20,000 in 2022 and more than half of the approximately 106,000 granted the right to travel to Britain for that work, an analysis of newly released Home Office data shows.

Britain’s government in December 2021 added care staff to a list of occupations for which visas would be granted to address a shortage of workers which rose sharply during the pandemic.

Should Africa be concerned largely for brain drain, or be content with the fact that a decent amount of FX would eventually find its way back to the continent as a result of this work migration?!
