LG Elections: Akpong Mathias Bepeh Declares Interest, Seeks Support for Chairmanship

A Lagos-based engineer and real estate developer from the Angiaba/Begiaka ward in Obudu local government area, Cross River State, Mr Akpong Mathias Bepeh, has declared his intention to run for the office of Executive Chairman of the Council in the forthcoming local government elections in the state, assuring that he would make the difference if voted.

Declaring his interest in his council ward in Agiaba/Begiaka, Akpong urged the All Progressive Congress leadership and stakeholders to consider him for the position, stating that he was prepared to take innovative steps to create wealth for the people, promote infrastructural revolution, improve security, and provide jobs for youths so that the people could get better deals from government.

Akpong further emphasised his desire to bring development to Obudu, citing good roads, pipe-borne water, equipped schools, street lights, scholarships, entrepreneurship programs, bridges, culverts, healthcare facilities, and more as areas he would focus on. He explained how familiar he was to them, having attended primary and secondary school in the ward before moving on to pursue tertiary education elsewhere, and promised to be available at all times, even when elected chairman.

Mr Ukwayi Christopher, a stakeholder from Bedia village, said: "Akpong is a son of the soil, and we trust him to deliver. He has seen development elsewhere, and we believe he will bring it to our doorstep." Another stakeholder, Lawrence Ishibi, from Bedia village, stated: "We need a youth like Akpong to lead us. He has the energy and passion to bring about the needed development to our local government."

Izama Oscar, a stakeholder from Ukoshie village, said: "Akpong's plans for our local government are impressive. He will work tirelessly to achieve them, and we believe in him." Keven Undiadeye, a stakeholder from Bedia village, highlighted Akpong's accessibility, saying: "Akpong is a listener, and he will remain accessible even when elected. We trust him to keep his promises."

Albert Undie, a stakeholder from Ibong village, emphasized the need for fresh ideas, stating: "Akpong's youth and passion make him an ideal candidate. We need someone who will bring new ideas and energy to our local government." Concluding, Fidelis Adie, a stakeholder from Ibong village, expressed his belief in Akpong's ability, saying: "We should stand by Akpong and give him the chance to serve. Together, we can make the Obudu Local Government Area great again."

Earlier, Mr Akpong Mathias met with the Paramount Ruler of Obudu, HRM Ukudari Felix Abanbeshe, to inform him of his intentions, and he was welcomed and given royal blessings.

New LGSC Chairman, Hon. Darlington Bassey, and Commissioners Assume Office

The new Chairman of the Cross River State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Hon Darlington Bassey and Commissioners of the Commission have officially assumed office as the substantive Chairman and commissioners of the Commission.

The chairman, Hon Darlington Bassey and six commissioners; arrived at the Local Government Service Commission around 9:30 a.m., after being confirmed by the Cross River State House of Assembly last week in its chambers.

Speaking during his inaugural meeting with commissioners of the commission and members of management staff, Hon Darlington Bassey thanked Governor Bassey Otu for finding him worthy of the position stating that though the task ahead of him may be challenging, with the support of the management and the entire staff of the commission, a lot of successes will be recorded under his watch.

Hon Darlington Bassey praised the commission's permanent secretary for his efforts in keeping the commission running smoothly before their appointments, noting that despite his efforts, the workload may have increased due to the commission's chairman and commissioners' absence. He assured that the commission is prepared to begin operations immediately and that an action plan and framework would be in place for the commission and members of management staff to achieve success.

The Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr Emmanuel Egban, speaking on behalf of the management staff, welcomed the new Chairman and expressed excitement at the appointment of the commission chairman and commissioners, adding that he had long anticipated the appointments given the commission's critical role and his limited authority in addressing critical issues within the commission.

The Permanent Secretary expressed the belief that with the interactions he has had with the new Chairman, the Commission was poised to surmount many of its challenges as he will hit the ground running. He further assured the Chairman that he has a great team to work with.

The inaugural meeting was attended by Dr Carol Edem, Commissioner 1; Chief Inyang Okon, Commissioner 2; Ojon Edward, Commissioner 3; Mr Daniel Ochui (snr), Commissioner 4; Mrs Wokeyim Otu, Commissioner 5; Hon Alina Bridget, Commissioner 6; and some management staff, including clergymen who dedicated their offices to God in prayer.

Dr Beshel attends NCCC Conference in Abuja as FG moves to improve Global Competitiveness in Raw Materials Development.

Cross River State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Justin Atiang Beshel , is currently in Abuja as part of a delegation of stakeholders from various sectors to attend the National Consultative Committee on Competitiveness (NCCC) conference, to discuss the implementation of the national strategy for competitiveness in raw materials and products development in Nigeria.

Declaring the event open, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to boosting the country’s global competitiveness in raw materials and product development. He emphasised the importance of developing Nigeria’s abundant raw materials into high-quality products.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Justin Beshel aligned with Chief Nnaji that although Nigeria has an abundance of raw materials, including solids, metals, energy minerals, and agro-raw materials, having these resources by itself does not ensure economic success. He stated that converting raw materials into high-quality products is both a tactical and necessary requirement for national development and global competitiveness.

The Honourable Commissioner, as a crucial stakeholder who co-chaired the subcommittee on research and development, underlined the necessity of domesticating the Council's decision throughout the federation and setting up State and Zonal offices to oversee its ex*****on. Cross River State was in the spotlight for pursuing partnerships in bee farming technology, cassava product technology, and a toxicological centre.

The purpose of the conference, which drew attendees from a variety of fields including academia, development partners, civil society organisations, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), organised private sector (OPS), and the media, was to talk about crucial topics about the effective ex*****on of the National Strategy.
