UK Govt Promises Support To Hummanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Ministry

The United Kingdom has pledged to support the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in its drive to reduce humanitarian crises and end poverty in Nigeria.

Development Director, British High Commission, Abuja, Dr Christopher Pycrof made this known Thursday when he paid a visit to the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu in her office.

Pycrof assured the Minister that the British government would place at her disposal any assistance her Ministry might require to succeed in its mandate.

According to him, "I just like to make it absolutely clear to you that the UK Government will provide you with support, we have a team which is focused both on the humanitarian side but also increasingly on the development side as well.

"So we are looking to work to provide durable solutions and we should be able to reduce that sense of separation between the need to provide lifesaving humanitarian support on the one hand, and then the need to provide development support on the other.

"We see it as a holistic approach for people to be in humanitarian need for as little time as possible, to work with them to be able to achieve sustainable livelihoods durable solutions, and then development which benefits everybody here in Nigeria. We have a lot of expertise which I would make available to support the ministry.

Describing the Minister' ,job as "one of the most complicated jobs in government", Pycrof commended Edu for the excellent manner she has so far piloted the affairs of the Ministry stating that her passion and commitment will make a big difference.

"I think it's probably safe to say that you've got one of the most complicated jobs in government. Not only have you got responsibility for dealing with the humanitarian situation, but then the poverty alleviation agenda means that you're also going to be involved in financial issues, in health, agriculture, education, infrastructure and employment etc. And you must coordinate from federal government with the State governments as well” Pycrof said.

Responding, Dr. Edu expressed immense gratitude to the UK government for the great support and partnership over the years. She was optimistic that working together, would birth a better result for Nigeria.

"We are really very grateful to the UK for continuous support. President Bola Tinubu has carefully selected his agenda to meet the needs of Nigerians in a sustainable manner. His priorities are to eradicate poverty, ensure food security, create jobs and protect the citizens of this country. Nations and development partners must key into this agenda for better coordination and impact. We are glad that you have committed to supporting the ministry we urgently require that support to make an impact.

The Ministry will work with other line ministries and the state governments, Local Government and development partners including great nations like yours to achieve the needed results.” Said the Minister.

Davido jets back to Nigeria for Mohbad’s candlelight rally

Davido, the Afrobeats star, says he will return to Nigeria for a candlelight rally organised in memory of Mohbad.

The 27-year-old singer died last Tuesday and was laid to rest on Wednesday.

The circumstance surrounding his death has continued to stir up controversies on social media.

The Lagos state police command recently commenced an investigation into Mohbad’s death and mentioned the possibility of exhuming his co**se.

Music fans have also organised candlelight processions to honour Mohbad.

Reacting to one of the fliers on his Instastory, Davido, in a terse post, said “on the way” to Nigeria.

The ‘Timeless’ hitmaker, who is on a tour in the United Kingdom, accompanied the post with an aircraft emoji and a Nigerian flag.

Tinubu: Nigeria will collaborate with AU to ensure democracy thrives in Africa

President Bola Tinubu has assured that Nigeria will support the African Union (AU) to attain democratic stability on the continent.

Tinubu spoke on Tuesday during a meeting with Azali Assoumani, president of Comoros and AU chairperson.

According to a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, Tinubu said the AU is strategically positioned to secure consensus positions for the continent on global economic and socio-political relations, particularly with Nigeria’s backing.

On the first day of UNGA 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu engaged in significant activities in collaboration with Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu:

1. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu received an update from Dr Betta Edu regarding the SDG high-level meeting held at the United Nations General Assembly Main Hall. They emphasized Nigeria's commitment to achieving the SDGs by 2030 and discussed the Ministry's plans, presentations, and advocacy tools in preparation for the President's speech on September 19, 2023.

2. Dr. Betta Edu held a significant meeting with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, at the UN Headquarters. During this meeting, the focus was on the need for collaboration between the UN and the Nigerian government to address humanitarian crises and emergencies. Dr. Edu also gained the UN's commitment to support the presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund, with a focus on long-term solutions.

3. Dr. Betta Edu represented President Bola Tinubu at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (UN 2023 Summit on SDGs). Accompanying her were the Governor of Gombe, H.E. Inuwa, the SSA for the SDG office, HRM Sanusi, and other members of the Nigerian delegation.

4. Additionally, the Minister participated in an event organized by the Nigeria Governors' Wife Forum alongside Sen Oluremi Tinubu. They emphasized the importance of diaspora Nigerians supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda, contributing to economic recovery, poverty alleviation, and nation-building.

IPU 2023: Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong calls for further support for Digital Transformation in Nigeria The Nigerian Senate Representative to the 2023 Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference (IPU), Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has stated that Nigeria is at the cusp of participating effectively and dominating the 4th Industrial Revolution. He made this known during the main session of the 2023 Inter-Paliamentary union conference currently holding in Hanoi, Vietnam. The senator pointed out that Nigeria has a comparative advantage with its large youth demographic who are very innovative and technologically knowledgeable. This he posited will greatly enhance Nigeria’s ability to participate effectively and dominate the 4th Industrial Revolution. He said that while it maybe argued that Nigeria and by extension, Africa has shown up to previous Industrial Revolutions a bit tardy, this 4th revolution will be dominated by Nigeria. Senator Ekpenyong further called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union to support the country in furthering the Digital Transformation agenda. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the global organization of national parliaments founded in 1889 as a small group of parliamentarians, dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue, it has since grown over its 135 years into a truly global organization with 179 country members out of 193 countries in the world. The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.

Ward 8 Calabar Municipal Pledges Total Support for Asuquo, Edim and Stanley. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, residents of Ward 8 in Calabar Municipal Council have committed their total support for Asuquo Ekpenyong (CRS APC Southern Senatorial Candidate), Ntufam Dr. Edim Edim Inok (APC Candidate for House of Reps, Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency) and Stanley Nsemo (APC Candidate for State House of Assembly, Calabar Municipal).
