Have you ever been disturbed by mosquitoes ?

Yes I have.

Mosquitoes were my co tenant, funny thing is when I kept using insecticides and i observed the insecticides were no longer effective after some time.

After serious spraying i observed the insect still jubilating and hustling for my blood. While I usually suffer cough and running nose.

I assumed the insecticides were adulterated but I was WRONG.

in the formulation of various insectides. Each insecticide is formulated with one or more active ingredient to work on either the

1. Nerve and muscle
2. Respiration
3. Midgut
4. Growth while some are not specified because they attack various part of the insect.

The same for insects that attack plants. Most farmers lack the knowledge of insecticide mode of action. They keep spraying an insecticide with Different brand name and the same group. And these insects keep growing resistance and doing more damage.

Join us at PEST-EU 1.0 to get the necessary information about various insectides.

I remembered an incident that took place in a farm few years ago. This man planted about 4 plots of cucumber and some other leafy vegetables and he is a first time farmer.

After a while, he discovered that pest where disturbing this cucumber by damaging the leaves so he decides to take action.

He visited an agroshop to get insecticide. It was one of those days where the sales person was very busy and didn't pay attention.

Long story short, he gave this man herbicide instead of an insecticide. That was the end of the entire farm project.

Who is at fault does not matter anymore because the damage has already been done.

Money and effort wasted.

If this man had understand what ACTIVE INGREDIENT AI of any pesticide is , he would have been able to know the difference between an insecticide and pesticide and avoid this great loss.

A lot of farmers have similar stories of how they sprayed herbicides instead of insecticide. That is why we are organizing this training.

TRUTH BE TOLD

In as much as modern Innovative Agricultural practice (Greenhouse) such as hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics are sexy, beautiful and eye catching for the news, journalist and other media houses.

When you see how structured they are, you will fall in love with them BUT As a business person. You do not fall in love with technology but You are concern and logical about things that will bring you profit that is your output.

The media houses and others will not pay you. In as much as they will increase your reach and put you out there. Will they pay your business bills? The Answer is NO.

Your customers are the ones paying the bills and when you customers or your target audience are the local market women. You will be joking to be spending so much on production and not making profit because AGRIBUSINESS IS NOT A SHOW BUSINESS.

If You can achieve your end goal products( safe food, sustainability, not harmful to the environment and consumers, less stress and profitability) with open field farming. No need to stress yourself to pouring millions into the construction of Greenhouses.

For purpose of business and profit, produce what your target markets will pay anything for and give quality value.

Greenhouses(soiless farming) are sustainable for the future especially in utilizing land/space, farm labour, water usages, reduction of environment pollution and soil degradation as a result of chemicals.

AGRICULTURE TODAY: the challenges of the global agriculturural system.

Agriculture today! Before we can talk about Agriculture today, we need to consider what was Agriculture yesterday. What was Agriculture before now? What do our ancestors practice? What was available to them?

Agriculture in Nigeria Today face a lot of challenges which we were not prepared for. That is why food is still a problem in a country with so much farmers.

More than 75% of Nigerians are farmers but we are still not food sufficient. We do not need more farmers but we need More output in our food production.

Some of the challenges that Agriculture and food face today is

-POPULATION GROWTH CHALLENGE: we have more mouth to feed and less production. Not as a result of lack of farmers but reduction of food output because of our crude system of farming.

-CLIMATE CHANGE : this pose a difficult task for farmers because farmers can no longer predict the weather conditions unlike before.

- FOOD SEASONALITY: Although there are most food we cannot control with respect to this eg mango etc we can therefore use technology to solve this with respect to vegetables and other short term annual crops

- FOOD WASTAGE : We are complaining of lack of food but the funny thing is alot of food are wasted due to spoilage especially during the movement from the farm to the market or final consumer therefore this can be reduced by the use of storage facilities in designated areas.

There are other challenges Sha ...

One thing is to identify the challenges and another is to solve them or reduce them and make money while solving them and That is what official wants to teach.

UGU IN GREENHOUSE(PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT)

YES! I am as surprised as you are too. I saw Ugu leave also known as flunted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) leaves inside a greenhouse.

Is it for show business or for profitability?

Well I will try to explain with my understanding

Flunted pumpkin leave also known as UGU leave is a vegetable that grows in almost everywhere in Nigeria and mainly used for preparing various mouth watering delicacy such as Egusi soup, ogbonor soup, vegetable/okro soup etc.

The demand for this product is high all year round.

During the rainy season, it is usually cheap and during the dry season, it is usually expensive.

When you want to export your produce, it must meet some specific requirements which greenhouse will allow you get easily.

Why spend so much on a greenhouse just to produce what you can just get by planting on bare ground?

Well to my better understanding, greenhouse is to get maximum yield while minimizing the usage of water, space and other agro chemicals and even labour.

Truth be said, in the coming years it will be difficult to get farm labourers. If I am lying ask those with huge farms how they are managing their current workers. Some go as far as Benin republic and other countries to get farm workers but at the end of the day, there are still one issue or the other.

Using greenhouse to grow some vegetables might not be profitable for the first few years after construction but on the longer run. You will see the profitability.

I ask myself how do those huge brands like Nestle, Unilever and other make their money from selling Maggie and other low priced produce after buying and setting up sites and equipment for huge sum of money.

But those companies are in profit because they sell in large scale. This is the same with green house.

The more greenhouse, the more you produce, the more profit...
