*Woman Shot by Husband: Betsy Obaseki Insists Government will Pursue Justice*

Benin City,

The First Lady of Edo State, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki, has delivered a stern warning to friends, relatives, and victims of gender-based violence, cautioning against attempting to pervert justice in cases of assault.

Her message comes in the wake of a disconcerting incident involving Mrs. Tina Okhiria, a woman whose hand was amputated after being shot by her husband, decision to change her testimony and discontinue the case.

In a meeting at the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki expressed shock and disappointment at Mrs. Okhiria's sworn affidavit to that effect.

The First Lady emphasized the gravity of gender-based violence, labeling it a crime against the state, and asserted that the government had already taken up the case and would not back down.

Mrs. Obaseki issued a strong warning to Mrs. Okhiria, asserting that any attempt to withdraw charges would result in her being added to the legal proceedings under the compounding felony clause. This provision, within the VAPP Law, could lead to both Mrs. Okhiria and her husband serving jail time. The First Lady stressed that the government's responsibility was to ensure a safe society for all citizens.

Highlighting the disheartening nature of Mrs. Okhiria's actions, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki underscored the tragic stories of women who had lost their lives due to domestic abuse. She pointed out the importance of speaking up and seeking justice in such cases.

Despite the challenges posed by the nature of the amputation, the First Lady revealed ongoing efforts to provide Mrs. Okhiria with the best electronic prosthesis globally, highlighting the significant costs involved.

The woman, Tina Okhiria, had initially sworn an affidavit stating that her husband's actions were not intentional. However, the First Lady's resolute stance reaffirms the government's dedication to addressing gender-based violence and ensuring justice prevails.

*At Alaghodaro Summit, Betsy Obaseki Leads Charge against Marginalisation of Women*

The First Lady of Edo State, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki, has challenged continued marginalisation of women in politics particularly at the Local Government level with a promise to take the perpetrators to court for gender based violence.

Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki said this at the Edo Women Summit which held at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City yesterday, the first of the five days activities to mark the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit, which saw women gather from the eighteen local government areas of Edo State.

Addressing a captivated audience, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki expressed her gratitude for the support she and her husband have received and acknowledged the progress made in empowering women in various fields across the State. She made it clear that the fight for gender equality had only just begun and that it was essential to secure positions for women in the highest echelons of power.

The Edo State first Lady noted that women had faced significant obstacles in their quest for political representation, with some men continuing to resist and hinder their progress drawing attention to the treatment of female vice-chairpersons in the local governments, describing their exclusion from important meetings and decision-making processes as unacceptable. Mrs. Obaseki warned that another battle for gender equality was on the horizon and pledged to hold accountable those responsible for marginalizing women.

The First Lady also vowed to use the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law to challenge gender-based discrimination within the political sphere, stressing that female officeholders deserve respect, equal opportunities to perform their duties, and fair compensation for their contributions to the state's development as is being practised in the administration of His Excellency Godwin Obaseki at the State level.

The event also featured commendations for Governor Obaseki's efforts in empowering women. Dr. Joan Oviawe, Edo State Commissioner for Education, lauded the Governor's initiatives, highlighting the promotion of teachers, with many now serving as permanent secretaries, and improved conditions for primary school teachers.

Sara Esangbedo-Ajose, Special Adviser on Strategy, celebrated the increased representation of women in the State cabinet, noting the positive impact of Governor Obaseki's governance.

Representatives from the three Senatorial districts who also spoke earlier acknowledging the First Lady's instrumental role in securing positions for women in the face of marginalization. Lady Uwa Osunbor, speaking on behalf of Edo South Senatorial District, expressed gratitude for Mrs. Obaseki's advocacy, emphasizing the unity and support of Edo women.

Mrs. Ihennyen praised the First Lady's guidance and initiatives, crediting her with bringing women together and fostering a sense of belonging. Similarly, Benedicta Attoh from Etsako North East highlighted Mrs. Obaseki's significant contributions to various sectors, crediting her with her emergence as Chairperson to the Local Government.

Women from Ikpoba Okha won this year’s match past competition while Oredo won the cultural display followed by their counterparts from Esan central.

Teachers Day: Obaseki commends Edo teachers, adds extra half-month bonus to 13th month salary

…says they are building foundation for Edo greatness

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has promised to pay teachers in the State an extra half-month bonus in December, in addition to the 13th-month salary to be paid to all workers in the State, as part of gifts to celebrate the teachers on the occasion of this year’s World Teachers' Day.

Obaseki made the promise while addressing the teachers during an event to mark the day in the State, with the theme, “The teachers we need for the education we want," held at the Conference Hall of Teachers House in Siluko Road, Benin City.

Commending the teachers for their role in societal development, Obaseki promised to ensure better welfare for the teachers, providing them with the skills, tools, and other incentives to effectively deliver on their roles in society.

The governor said: “Teachers say I should give them palliative or gift for today. I have already promised all workers in Edo State that you will get your 13th month salaries this year. What I will add as a gift to celebrate the teachers because of the World Teachers Day celebration is that all the teachers will get an additional half-month bonus.”

Acknowledging the teachers for supporting the government’s reforms in the education sector, which has made Edo a model State in tackling learning poverty, the governor noted, “With the transformation we have taken in basic education, Edo is now a model to be copied globally as the world is asking us how we did it. I tell them anywhere I go that my teachers are the ones who did it.

“Edo children are no longer known for learning poverty. The world is talking about EdoBEST. Learning poverty is when a child that is up to 10 years old can't read a complete sentence or write. We say such a child is suffering from learning poverty.

“As a government, we owe our teachers in the State and are grateful to them for what they are doing for the future of Edo State as the children they teach are the future of the State. Our teachers are building the future of Edo State, which is human resources.”

He continued: I recall in 2018, I told the teachers that we have to do something and transform the education sector in Edo. But the problem we had in the past was that of trust because of failed promises over the years.

“But in six years, my administration has been able to build trust which is the foundation of anything in life. With trust, we have changed the landscape of education in Edo State. We still have challenges and problems to solve but they are not unique to us. We have done our best to improve in the sector.

“Teachers are the anchor of EdoBEST reforms. You have done well for our children and the reforms are far-reaching as people are coming into the State to learn how we did it. Our doors are open for them to learn how we have achieved what we have achieved.”

Describing the theme of the celebration as apt, the governor further stated, “We believe we have already started grooming the teachers we want that will help us fulfill the educational vision we want for our future leaders.

“We have equipped our teachers in the basic schools with technological devices to enhance teaching. We have laid 2,000km of fiber optic connection across the local governments in Edo State and our plan is to connect every school and empower more teachers to give better education and information to our students.

“We will build on what we have started and pray we get a successor that believes in education and the teachers to keep the sector moving.”

Noting efforts by the government to address teachers’ shortage, Obaseki said, “The EdoSTAR programme was started to discontinue the situation where just anybody teaches our children rather than trained teachers.

“Today we have 4,500 fellow star teachers and we pay them N40,000 and observe them before finally recruiting them into the mainstream of the education sector. We will continue to address the issue of insufficient teachers in our schools.”

On his part, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUJ), Edo State Chapter, Bernard Gbenga, said the World Teachers Day celebration is set aside yearly to celebrate, appreciate, recognize, and reward teachers for their contributions to the education sector and development of society.

He further commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of the teachers in the State, and taking deliberate steps to revamp and strengthen the education sector.

Obaseki inaugurates 34 SSAs, 152 SAs, charges on grassroots devt

…be truth-bearers, gov tasks newly sworn-in aides

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, inaugurated 34 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and 152 Special Assistants (SAs) in five local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District of the State, with a charge to be the bearers of truth and complement the government’s efforts at driving development in the grassroots.

Obaseki said the appointees were selected from Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Ovia South West, Ovia North East, and Orhionmwon local government councils in Edo South Senatorial District, noting that appointees from other two local government areas that make up the senatorial district will be announced soon as the party finalises on the selection of credible members that are worthy of the appointments.

The governor disclosed that, “Out of the seven local government areas from Edo South, we are appointing SSAs and SAs from five local government areas. The reason is that we are trying to foster unity and inclusiveness in our party so that all are given the opportunity to participate. Those local governments we have not accepted their list are those local governments where work is still in progress. We are insisting that the leaders must agree and confirm that the people who are nominated are people who are faithful, worked for the party, and have the capacity to work for the governor.

“One of the key criteria for appointment is that you must be resident in that local government as you can’t be a political appointee in absentia. Gone are the days when you get an appointment and go abroad, it can't happen again. You have to be resident in your local government. You need to be there to know what is going on so as to help us develop the local government and State.”

He further noted, “You all are my appointees, you work for me not the local government. We are working in all the wards in Edo State; we have teachers, health workers, and many others as we work together to develop the State. We want people on the ground to communicate to the people what we are doing and also want feedback from them.

“This is not a fancy appointment but involves real work this time around. You have SSAs who you work with and will coordinate your activities and give me a monthly report of what is going on. You must show me your contacts and relationship with the people and show me the medium of communication to ensure a real impact in all the wards.

“You all belong to our party as your appointment is based on the fact that you belong to our party and must show commitment towards that. You must promote the interest of the party. The people have decided to follow our party and it showed at the last local government election in the State.”

According to him, “I am passionate about the poorest of the poor in the State, let me know those who can’t feed and eat in your various local governments to enable the government to send palliative measures to them as we must care for our people. We must know those children that can't go to school. We must know the state of our schools. We pay civil servants to work and want you to be our eyes to know those who are really working.”

The governor added, “We want unity in our party because we are in charge and the party to beat. Election is coming and politicians will throw all sorts of lies to discredit our party. Your role is to put things in the right perspective as you are the bearers of the truth of what the government is doing and make sure you are there to correct any lies they put out there. You must counter all the lies they put out on social media. I have faith in you to do well and accomplish the goal set out for you.”

On his part, the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, while congratulating the newly inaugurated appointees, charged, “You have been appointed at a very crucial time as we head into critical and serious political times starting from next month. It's not a mistake that you are inaugurated at this time from five local government areas as you have your work cut out for you.

“If you were SSAs or SAs in the last dispensation, the work is different this time around because there is a lot of work to do for the party. We know that you are ready to help the party to win the governorship election next year. The interest of the party is towards the 21st of September next year.”

Other guests at the inauguration ceremony include Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, and other party leaders and members across the State’s 18 local government areas

*Edo First Lady Commends Federal Government for National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Benin*
The Government of Edo state has ceded Ugbor PHC to the Federal Government of Nigeria as temporal site of National Obstetric Fistula Centre Benin City.

This move comes as the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, the initial home of the facility, undergoes extensive reconstruction and renovation activities, pending the construction of its permanent site.

The handover ceremony of the Ugbor Primary Health Centre, by the Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, to the management team of the National Obstetric Fistula Hospital, under the leadership of Professor Ileogben Sunday-Adeoye MON, represents a vital step in the relentless efforts led by the Office of the First Lady of Edo State to combat vesicovaginal fistula in the region.

During the ceremony, the Edo State First Lady, whose dedication to the cause is unwavering, extended her heartfelt appreciation to the Federal Government for its invaluable collaboration. She also used the occasion to encourage women in the region to make use of the facility, offering them assurance of free surgical treatments.

"Please come, the doctors will attend to you here, and nobody needs to know. If you feel it's shameful, you can come quietly here and get treated and quietly return to your home. Seek a better quality of life and get treated," she affirmed.

Professor Ileogben Sunday-Adeoye MON, the Acting Medical Director of the Hospital, shed light on the necessity of relocating the Obstetric Fistula facility to the Ugbor PHC due to ongoing renovations at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital. He explained that this decision was made following a thorough scoping mission conducted by a team from the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the state government.

Dr. Samuel Ali, Edo State Commissioner for Health, outlined his vision for the future, emphasizing that while the center operates from its current location, plans are underway at the federal level for the establishment of a permanent site for the hospital.

This collaborative effort marks a beacon of hope and relief for countless women affected by obstetric fistula conditions not only in the South South region but also across Nigeria. It represents a significant stride taken by both the national and state governments in providing essential healthcare services and support to vulnerable populations and those in dire need.
