Your ego might be killing you.
In the summer of 1986, two ships, an ocean liner with 1234 passengers and a cargo freighter, collided in the Black Sea off the coast of Russia.
Within 15 minutes, the 17,000-ton, 525-foot liner sank, so quickly that there was no time to launch lifeboats.
The freighter barely had a scratch and eventually took part in the rescue mission as well of the liner.
398 persons were reported to have died after being hurled into the icy water below. 116 bodies were recovered while the remaining 282 were listed as missing.
News of the disaster got worse when an investigation revealed the cause of the accident. It wasn’t a technical problem like radar malfunction, or even thick fog.
So what was the cause?
Acute strong head.
I no go gree syndrome.
Each captain was aware of the other ship’s presence for 45minutes before the collision and both could have steered clear. But according to news reports and investigations, neither captain wanted to give way to the other, because each was too proud to yield.
By the time they came to their senses, it was too late.
The captains both knew they on a collision course for as long as 45minutes, enough time to avert the disaster, but village people held their hands firmly on the wheels and kept whispering....
.."Ah, Capo! No gree oh, shebi na you be Odogwu of the high sea! Show dem something today, make dem know who you be!"
Meanwhile, the Captain of the liner abandoned his bridge before the crash. So he could be afraid in the end?
According to reports, there were no injuries aboard the freighter, which was not seriously damaged and took part in the rescue operation.
However, the liner was ripped open between her engine and boiler rooms. Both captains were found guilty and arrested.
Over 300 lives gone because of a pointless ego war.
Ego war takes different forms; career, physical, social status, I pass my neighbour, and so on. Sometimes just I'm sorry could end a war, Ego can undue you for life. Ad
