*Sunny Ajose: A Providence To His Country Home*

That every one must accept his or her destiny is not a matter of whether we like it or not. On the other hand, that no one can predict how his or her destiny will be fulfilled is all about providence. This aptly describes an enigma that is widely known as Sunny Ajose. He is elderly, a consummate administrator, cerebral mind and fondly referred to as "Baba Sunny Ajose" in the political circle of Badagry and Lagos State in general.

Given his childhood history, he missed the opportunity of being raised in his hometown, Badagry, but as fate would entrust on him and by dint of hard work, he looked ahead of the future, and that interest made him to jet out of the country successfully to attend to his academic pursuits abroad. He was back into the country after achieving his goals, and thereafter, he picked up employment with the Lagos State Government where he made the most successful career that has ever come from the entire Lagos-West when he rose prestigiously to become the Head of Service, Lagos State. He retired statutorily and meritoriously in 2006.

Having been discovered by the last Military Administrator of Lagos State, Col. Buba Marwa, he worked with the succeeding Administration of the elected Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR (now President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria) as Permanent Secretary, Office of Chief of Staff and merited all tests by every paraphernalia of office, and Asiwaju (as fondly called) with knacks for discovering uncommon leaders preferred to settle down with him as Head of Service during his second term in office as Governor of Lagos State.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the throng of fulfilling his lifetime dream as the current President of Nigeria has been an unequal Navigator of the grassroots in his quest for nation's building, and to his credit, he has discovered many leaders as at today more than anyone in the political landscape called Nigeria. Among the velvet is this elderly Chief, Honourable, Dr. Akinsanya Sunny Taseyon Ajose, OON. He is a Member of the Distinguished Circle of the great All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos State, known as "Governance Advisory Council."

As Chinua Achebe said in one of his literary pieces, "no one can escape his destiny", this cerebral and astute administrator and leader could have occupied different political offices, especially on the plater of elections at the national level. Although he once made such move in the past, but the exigency of positioning Badagry for leadership is a providence that must be fulfilled at all cost. So, Baba Sunny Ajose is the man of providence to his country home, Badagry, and he is fairly of age and growing gracefully with another birthday celebrated in April, 2024. May I use this medium to dedicate this piece to him on the occasion of his birthday as I wish him many happy returns and sound health.

Having answered his call to a greater assignment for humanity within his own people, the harvest of his able leadership would be what his own people could make out of his noble calling vis-a-vis how well his own people also appreciate the value that he tries to bring to the table for everyone would go along way to cement the synergy that works around difficulties and sway success in favour of Badagry in the scheme of things in Lagos and the Federation. This call on everyone of us to stand out and surpass others in this age of stiff competition. We need more federal presence now.

In pacesetting, one important aspect that his people should accord him is to understudy his leadership, so that peradventure in the later years to come, he will not be leaving behind a big shoes that no one could wear. Leadership is not built by force! It is earned by working with others for self-recognition and self-prestige. It could be entrusted by who may be influential or those around a given personality. That Pastor (Hon.) Cornelius Ojelabi, is today, the APC State Chairman in Lagos State is a good example of how leadership is earned through trust. To a large extent, Baba Sunny Ajose would remain a trusted Deputy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, anytime Badagry politics is discussed.

There is need to take Baba Sunny Ajose as "A Bright Academy". Politicians in Badagry axis should be diligently committed to understudy his approach to issues of concern in the environment. Doing this would evolve mutual understanding and mentoring of supposed great minds from his locale that can earn multitude of respect that brings pride to one's area. At present, the number of indigenes of Badagry Division in the Body of Permanent Secretaries in the State calls for serious concern. The number one Apex Leader for the entire Badagry Local Government Area is more of "A Cambridge Cut" and does not believe in the lexicon of "anything goes." Hence, some of these must be ready to break the ceiling of directorship by earning distinguishing marks in their service to the State, though, in this peculiar environment, "ibi gbogbo lati nko adie ale."

Just about fifteen minutes encounter with him, this writer discovered that he longed to fulfill the desire of the top-notch APC position bestowed upon him, and has shown a generous mind to be fair to everyone in the task of Badagry development as a collective agenda. For Baba Sunny, he wants to see how well a carrier can raise the load to attract a hand lift. This is a reasonable course to which he may not yield his ground. His presence at the table of decision-making is simply calling on individuals from this axis across all walks of life to position themselves for opportunities that may not come overnight, but by long-time sacrifice and commitments. Some day, Badagry will fare well. I strongly believe this.

Hon. Setonji David: An Enabler in Badagry Constituency 02

Broadly speaking, the job of a parliamentarian is broadly divided between lawmaking, oversight functions, and being "an enabler" in fulfilling the pulse of the masses as a member of a State or National Assembly. This sacred duty may not be an easy ride, but an effective representative must have the ability to move among the packs in bringing his constituents' desires to fruition for owing them trust and collective mandate. With lawmaking and oversight functions, the consequences lie in being an enabler of the "people's voice" in government. Thus, a representative's opinions should be both heard in government and must be felt by the people when gauged on the benchmark of good governance.

As a legislator in the State House of Assembly, the David that he is possesses a heart that looks after the people's welfare and there is enough evidence to support the claim from one community to the others. One of these is that in June 2023, a publication titled "Ikoga-Zebbe -Mowo Road Requires Urgent Fixing" brought him down to the site, and he personally inspected and saw the dire condition of the road with immeasurable values both to his constituents and the State Government at that time of torrential rainfall, and defying the downpour was noble about him. To God be the glory! The State Government has taken cognizance of the deplorable road for reconstruction. Then, he also sacrificed and collaborated with the Public Works Corporation in providing palliative on the road pending its reconstruction.

To date, the people's Honourable has not rest on his oars to deliver the dividends of democracy to his people, as he has continuously mobilized both government and private outfits to different sites to improve the living conditions of his people in different localities begging for the attention of the State. Some of his efforts on road maintenance are: Ajara Roundabout area, Catholic Church Road, Ajara-Vetho Road, Iluda Road, Chief Pot Junction, Ajara Grammar School road, Lagos-Badagry Old Road Ibereko, Ajara Dokoh axis, Y Junction and other areas in the two Council's Areas. At present, he is undertaking Agelasho-Agbovipe channel dredging.

Given the giant strides he has made so far to improve the quality of lives of the masses with a network of road upgrades and similar infrastructure, it is nearly possible that the masses will continue to require his selfless service as "Oliver Twists" to experience more development within their communities. The noble service he has rendered is aiding people's livelihood in many homes, easing the movement of commuters, and safeguarding environmental degradation unlike before. Also, he has a record to have provided a free health care programme for the people of Ilogbo-Eremi in Olorunda Local Council Development Area and facilitated Trade Tests for some constituents.

Aside from being one of the philanthropists who had donated free GCE and JAMB forms to students across his Constituency, he is one public figure who is determinedly saying that it is not enough to use mouth to paint the ancient history of Badagry, but we must be seen to "walk the talk." A Civil Engineer by profession who retired from the State's Public Service as Director also has the flair to have written a few publications in some of the national newspapers, one of which is "Lagos Has A Special Status: Let's Make It Official." Thus, it is not rhetoric to say that Hon. Setonji David is a true loyalist of the Jagaban's political learnings. As an irredentist Lagos Advocate from Badagry Local Government Area, he has been tested and no doubt, he is visionary, agile, and a personality with a more promising political future in the State Assembly.

Today, Hon. Setonji David somehow holds the bell which sounds like a wake-up call to others who wear similar shoes on this axis of the State. One area which must be given proper attention is employment in the State and Federal Public Service for the indigenes. Some of these indigenes had laboured to sponsor themselves to higher institutions and for a decade or thereabouts after, age is now a disadvantage for them to pick up a teaching appointment and possibly in some cadres too due to employers' "age discretion." It is hereby important to safeguard the future ahead of us to diminish poverty recycling that may pose a serious danger to our society.

As of today, Hon. Setonji David has proved himself worthy as "a typical of a class" whose feelings and conditions he knows very well and with terms for changing the narrative from a primitive state to a better life. His years at the Lagos State House of Assembly have counted tremendously and will be remembered by posterity for years to come. This is a plus to him.

As he awaits his first anniversary, let me wish him and other political office holders from this axis of the State, hearty congratulations, ahead. It was heartwarming the other day when the public saw that Hon. Solomon Saanu Bonu (a. k. a. Just Solo) solicited BRT buses to commence operation in Badagry including his efforts in bringing Mr. Governor and some cabinet members to different tourism sites in Badagry. Kudos to Hon. Sesi Whingan who earlier brought the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John to the ancient town. Hon. Ibrahim Layode has helped some of our people to gain employment in the State and his counterpart, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende has been doing well to empower the youths. Kindly note that the citizens deserve more to be at par with the twenty-first-century development and its economic challenges.

Lagos Govt takes measures to curb rising cost of food as Retreat for Ministry of Agric ends....commissioner charges staff to redouble efforts in implementing policies.

The Lagos State Government has reassured residents that necessary measures are being taken to address the rising cost of food items and other consumables in the state.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya gave this assurance at the end of the two-day retreat for the Management staff of the Ministry held at the Orchid Hotels in Lekki.

She said that part of the messures in curbing the high cost of food in the metropolis was the recent Market Trader Money launched by the Governor in which was distributed to 15,000 residents.

According to her, the first Food Logistics Hub in West Africa in Ketu would soon be delivered while work will soon begin at the three more Agro Food Hubs in Agege, Abule Ado and Sangotedo.

She explained that the Agro Food Hub first established in Mushin is gradually returning value for money spent on food itmes by residents within a clean environment.

Abisola Olusanya however urged residents to reflect on the caution by the Governor against hoarding and unnecessary increase in the prices of food itmes in the state.

On his part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr Oluwarotimi Fashola who thanked the staff of the ministry for their unalloyed support over the years charged them to redouble their efforts in the implementation of government policy and program.

He was of the view that their commitments to the success of the Agenda of the ministry was more important now due to the economic challenges confronting the country.

One of the Facilitators at the retreat, Dr Adebowale Oyebade who spoke on Wellness and Mental Health said that around 450m people around the world currently suffers from mental disorders while one in four people will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at somenpoint in their lives.

She listed some factors responsible for mental disorders to include; worsening economic issues, increasing unemployment rate, kidnapping, insurgency and influence of social Media.

Dr Oyebade who is from LASUTH however stressed the need for the participants to accord full priority to their health need in order to give their best during official duty.

The medical expert also want government to ensure that more Nigerians are covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme since their purchasing powers had been eroded over the years.

On how to promote mental health, Dr Oyebade advised the participants to engage in healthy habits, lifestyle, exercise, holiday from work, consumption of more water, fruits and vegetables.

A paper was also presented on Agricultural Economic Context in Nigeria (Trends in the food spaces) at the retreat.

In their reactions, some of the participants said that one of the ways to solve the current high cost of food in the country was for government to improve on security around the farmlands as well as incentives to farmers.

They also called for collaboration among states in the areas of comparative advantage and improvement on transportation network of food items from farmlands to the market.

SANWO-OLU FLAGS OFF LAGOS MARKET TRADER MONEY, DISTRIBUTES N750M TO 15,000 BENEFICIARIES

•Says initiative will stimulate economic activities in food markets

•Badagry traders recount effects of multiple check points on price of commodity

In fulfilment of his promise and demonstration of love to market men and women on Valentine’s Day, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, flagged off the distribution of N750million financial intervention scheme tagged “Lagos Market Trader Money” for 15,000 beneficiaries.

The 15,000 beneficiaries, who received N50,000 each, were drawn from across all the six geo-political zones of Nigeria – South-West, South-East, South-South, North-Central, North-West and North East, but are all residents of Lagos.

Speaking during the launch of the Lagos Market Trader Money held at De Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the gesture will go a long way to actualise his goal of transforming the food systems in Lagos State and stimulate economic activities in various food markets in line with his administration’s THEMES+ developmental agenda.

It would be recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu during the commissioning of the Mid-Level Agro produce Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin on Sunday, December 17, 2023, announced a N750million financial intervention scheme for Lagos traders tagged “Lagos Market Trader Money” for 15,000 traders across the State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu fulfilled his promise in less than 60 days as 250 traders from each of 20 local governments and 37 Local Development Council Areas (LCDAs), as well as 750 beneficiaries identified from markets within the barracks and military formations across the State, on Wednesday, received N50,000 each.

Sanwo-Olu implored the beneficiaries of the Lagos Market Trader Money to make the best and judicious use of the grant in ways that will contribute to the economic development of the State.

“I urge you to let the citizens of Lagos feel the impact of this grant and all the other support that this administration has been providing towards ensuring food security, through reasonable reduction in the cost of basic food items in a way that it will be affordable to ordinary Lagosians,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the initiative was conceptualized as a stop-gap measure of the Lagos State Government to empower small-scale traders in the Food Systems by providing them financial support to expand their businesses thereby fostering economic growth and improving the lives of many within the State.

He said: “This will ensure sustainable livelihoods and facilitate business expansion for 15,000 traders who occupy a strategic position in the State’s economic pyramid and food distribution network.

“Lagos State, which has a growing population presently estimated at over 24 million has a food system transaction value of over N6trillion annually, is in the process of establishing a dynamic food market system under the Food Systems Transformation Agenda to promote the preservation, storage, transportation and presentation of wholesome food to the populace, with the aim of reducing food waste, improve affordability, guarantee food safety, quality and accessibility.

“This initiative led to the implementation of key projects such as the establishment of the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub, Ketu-Ereyun, Epe and the Mid-Level Agro Produce Hub, Idi-Oro, Mushin. As a mark of our resolve to follow through with the Agenda, work has commenced on three additional Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hubs at Sangotedo, Agege, and Abule-Ado, while the first phase of the Lagos Central Food Security System and Logistics Hub will be commissioned by December 2024.”

Speaking on how the 15,000 traders were selected for the Lagos Market Trader Money, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that “The beneficiaries were identified by the State’s Agricultural Field Officers serving each LGA/LCDA in collaboration with the Iyaloja/Babaloja General and Market Masters of each Local Government/Local Council Development Area across the State.

“The beneficiaries were selected through a methodical process targeted at 200 beneficiaries from markets in each LGA/LCDA in addition to 50 beneficiaries that were selected by the Iyaloja/Babaloja General in each LGA/LCDA making a total of 14,250 market traders.

“Also, 750 beneficiaries were identified from markets within the Barracks and Military formations across the State in collaboration with their respective Iyaloja/Babaloja. This brings the total number of beneficiaries to 15,000.

“To ensure fairness in the selection process while demonstrating the spirit of Lagos as being home to all, the beneficiaries were drawn from across all the geopolitical zones of the Nation with 11,039 from the South-West, 914 from the South-East, 868 from the South-South, 1,710 from North- Central, 373 from the North-West and 107 from the North-East.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also noted that 75 percent of the beneficiaries are women while the remaining 25 percent are men, adding that 35 percent of the beneficiaries are below 40 years while 65 percent are above 40 years. He said this goes to show the social inclusiveness in implementing the initiative.

Speaking earlier, Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the Lagos Market Trader Money initiative is part of the government’s efforts towards ensuring sustainable livelihoods and wealth creation for traders across the State.

She said: “This initiative is part of the State Government’s commitment to the development of the downstream segment of food and agricultural value chains which centers on markets and market access. This is due to the fact that Lagos is the largest market city-state in sub-Saharan Africa.

“The support that would be extended today is targeted at expanding the capacity of the beneficiaries to off-take more produce from our farmers thereby catalysing increased food production in and outside the State.

“This Initiative, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Local Governments, in collaboration with market leaders across all the 57 LGAs and LCDAs is only the first of many to be launched by Mr. Governor towards helping to shoulder the burdens of the citizenry, ranging from food, health, education to transportation.”

Also speaking, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Chief (Mrs.) Folasade Tinubu-Ojo appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for the good gestures to market men and women in Lagos State.
She enjoined traders, who are beneficiaries of the Lagos Market Trader Money to make good use of the N50,000 given to them to augment their businesses.

While appreciating the gesture of Governor Sanwo Olu, Mr Waliu Bello, a trader and Market Committee member from Owode market in Badagry West Local Council Development Area called on the governor to see to the multiple check points by security agencies along Lagos - Badagry - Seme and Owode Apa expressroads.

He said the multiple check points have forced drivers to increase cost of transportation which is telling heavily on prices of commodities.

"Cost of transportation keep rising almost daily and as a result of the extortion on drivers, we end up spending outrageous amount to bring our goods into the market.

"There is need for government intervention on the issue of the multiple check points for the impact of this laudable program to be felt and for improved economy," he said.
