The Jim Thorpe Story

This is Jim Thorpe. Look closely at the photo, you can see that he's wearing different socks and shoes. This wasn't a fashion statement. It was the 1912 Olympics, and Jim, represented the U.S. in track and field. On the morning of his competitions, his shoes were stolen. Luckily, Jim ended up finding two shoes in a garbage can. That's the pair that he's wearing in the photo. But one of the shoes was too big, so he had to wear an extra sock. Wearing these shoes, Jim won two gold medals that day.

This is a perfect reminder that even when life isn't fair the question is what are you going to do about it today? Whatever you woke up with this morning; stolen shoes, ill health, failed relationships, failed business, don't let it stop you from running your race. You've got an impact to make so get on with living. You can have reasons not to or you can have results...but you can't have both.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has claimed that the emergence of Stanley Nwabali as the new number one ends the superstition that he cursed the team.

Enyeama retired from international football after 101 caps for Nigeria, following a disagreement with the then-head coach, Sunday Oliseh.

Since his exit, the three-time African champions have struggled to replace him.

With Maduka Okoye not available for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and Francis Uzoho not convincing with his performances, coach Jose Peseiro called up Nwabali for the tournament.

Despite not playing any competitive game prior, Nwabali impressed as the team reached the final.

“I think Stanley (Nwabali) came in at the right time; for a long time, we have been clamouring for a goalkeeper,” Enyeama said.

“We didn’t readily have Okoye, and Uzoho had done well with the national team, but his form is unfortunate.

“I pray he continues in this good form and ends all the talks about me cursing the national team or casting a spell on the national team.

“I received a lot of nasty messages accusing me of all sorts, but thankfully, Stanley came in and helped change that narrative by breaking through the ranks.

“I didn’t curse the national team; if I had the power to do that, I could have currently changed the economic fortunes of Nigeria.”

This is to commemorate the Eid-ul-Maulid celebration, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), according to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

While making the declaration in Abuja on Monday, he congratulated all Muslim faithful both at home and in the diaspora for this year’s occasion.

“His admonition to Nigerians is to imbibe the spirit of love, patience, tolerance and perseverance which are deep spiritual virtues that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exemplified,” the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Oluwatoyin Akinlade said in a statement.

Lagos State makes Yoruba Language a compulsory course for all students, names it GNS104

The Lagos State University (LASU) in an obvious move to preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, has announced the inclusion of Yoruba Language as a compulsory course for all its students.

The new course added to the school’s curriculum from the 2023/2024 academic session is titled GNS 104 (Yoruba Language Studies).

Speaking on the development, Professor T.M Salisu, the Dean of LASU Faculty of Arts and Humanities, expressed his enthusiasm for the introduction of the course. He emphasized its potential to strengthen students’ connections to their roots and promote cultural diversity.

“GNS 104 will not only enhance language proficiency but also encourage a more profound understanding of the Yoruba people, their customs, and traditions,” he stated.

For those who're wondering, the eyebrows we see on Lashley today are tattooed. Some fans thought they were drawn on, but that's not the case.

Lashley is one of those guys who sweat a lot even before the in-ring action begins. This causes issues for Lashley and makes it harder for him to wrestle in the ring as all that drips into his eyes resulting in blurred vision. It's the eyebrows' job to protect us from sweat, and since Lashley doesn't have those, he constantly has to wipe them off from his eyes.

Being bald doesn't help him either since the lack of hair makes it easier for sweat to get into his eyes. It's the main reason why he wore a sweatband during his TNA run and early days of his 2nd run with the WWE.

NO NEED FOR NIGERIAN PRESIDENTS TO SEEK MEDICAL TREATMENT ABROAD – AISHA BUHARI



The First Lady, Aisha Buhari, is of the opinion that Nigerian presidents have no need to travel abroad for medical treatments, following the inauguration of the 21 billion naira Presidential Wing of the State House Medical Centre.

Mrs Buhari stated this when she joined President Muhammadu Buhari and other dignitaries for the commissioning ceremony of the facility situated in the premises of Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The president’s wife told State House correspondents that she established the idea of the wing six years ago, after the extensive stay of her husband abroad, for medical treatment.

She assured that with the facility in place, Nigerian Presidents and their family members will no longer need to go abroad for treatment but may only fly medical experts to assist their colleagues in the country.

COURT SACKS ALEX OTTI AS ABIA GOVERNOR-ELECT.
A Federal High Court sitting in Kano State has canceled the candidature of the Abia State Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti.

The court presided over by Justice M N Yunusa also nullified the candidature of all Labour Party flagbearers in Abia and Kano States.

Yunusa ruled that their emergence was not in compliance with the 2022 Electoral Act provisions.

The judge gave the ruling on the Suit No FHC/KN/CS/107/2023 filed by one Mr Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The party that has not complied with the provisions of the electoral act cannot be said to have candidate in an election and cannot be declared winner of an election; this being so, the votes credited to the 1st defendant is a wasted vote,” the judge held.

According to him, the failure of the Labour Party to submit its membership register to the INEC within 30 days before their primaries renders the process invalid.

Meanwhile, Dr Alex Otti has responded to the rulling, assuring Abians that his inauguration would go on as planned.

Malaysian Police arrest Nigerians for smuggling cooking oil

Police in Malaysia has arrested three Nigerian men allegedly smuggling cooking oil subsidized by the Malaysian government for its citizen, for illegal shipment to Nigeria.

The commodities were concealed in kettles and rice cookers meant for export to Nigeria.

North Klang district police Chief ACP Vijaya Rao stated that the suspects were nabbed when police raided a vehicle spare parts shop in Bandar Baru Klang.

“We believe the high price of cooking oil in Nigeria prompted the suspects to smuggle the items. We are conducting further investigations to determine the amount of cooking oil smuggled out,” he added

A 60-year-old man named Isak Wahab reportedly died from shock after a friend allegedly stole his ATM and withdrew N700,000 from his bank account.

The deceased's wife, Monsurat, accused his friend, identified only as Ola, of making the withdrawal, which she said led to the death of her husband.

Monsurat said Ola stole her husband's ATM when he visited them at their residence in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, according to Punch.

She said: "Ola was a close friend to our family, particularly my husband. He had financial difficulties with his rent and he came to my husband to tell him that he wanted to sell his generator so that he could raise money to pay his rent. My husband told him not to do that and said he was expecting payment from our tenants and he could help. My husband then gave him N10,000.

"Meanwhile, we did not know that Ola had taken my husband’s ATM card and he withdrew money from it amounting to N700,000. He withdrew the money in tranches of N200,000, N300,000 and another N200,000."

The deceased’s son, Ajibola, alleged that Ola stole his father’s ATM card after his father became intoxicated while they drank alcohol together.

He said the case was reported at the Ikotun Police Station for investigation, adding that the suspect disappeared after he was accused of being responsible for the death.
