By Mohammed Kaka Misau

The Federal University of Health Sciences Azare FUHSA has on Saturday conducted a matriculation ceremony to usher in 1,178 newly admitted students into the Institution's 2024/2025 Academic Session.

Speaking during the third matriculation ceremony, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Bala M. Audu warned the students against indulging in actions that are capable of jeopardizing their studies.

He informed the students that the matriculation ceremony was been conducted in line with the tradition of officially welcoming them as bonafide members of the Institution on a study cause.

"As the tradition demands, the management is here today to perform this pre-requisite function of officially inducting you into the mainstream of Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare community", the Vice Chancellor said.

"You should know that thousands qualified young Nigerian candidates like you, are out there seeking for admission but may not get admitted into any university. Your admission into this University is highly competitive and for a purpose, and the purpose is to groom and train you to be useful to yourself, your family, society, the Nation and humanity", he added .

The VC who congratulated the students, also enjoined them to be "law abiding and face your studies with all the seriousness it deserves so that at the end, you, your parents, and the University shall celebrate your success".

According to him, since the establishment of the University in 2021, the management has made "Zero tolerance to all kinds of social vices, such as cultism, examination misconducts, sexual harassment, drug abuse, homosexuality, lesbianism, indecent dressing, vandalism, theft and truancy to be part of the Institution's core values.

He warned that such anti-social behaviours are not only frowned at but also prohibited, and that FUHSA would be known not only for giving knowledge but also for moulding character and behavior of its students to become good ambassadors of the nation.

The Vice Chancellor sternly warned that those who break the rules shall be made to face the Disciplinary Committee, which can result in dismissal from the University.

"Let me re-iterate the fact that higher institutions cannot operate in absolute isolation from the communities where they are found. You are to interact with your immediate University Community and the Community of Azare town with positive energy contributing in trust and honesty to its progress and development", Professor Audu said.

The VC informed the students that the Oath they took is an indication of their readiness and acceptance to abide by FUHSA laws and statutes as well as a promise that they will conduct themselves with decorum during their stay in the Institution.

He assured them that the university had made a provision for an acceptable standard academic facilities and welfare for their studies.

"As you may be aware, the five pioneer programmes MBBS, Dentistry, Nursing Sciences, Radiography and Human Nutrition and Dietetics have faced NUC accreditation last three weeks and we are optimistic that all the Programmes will scale through and get full accreditation status by the NUC", he said.

The VC added that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) will also come for MBBS and Dentistry Accreditation in early 2025, pointing out that the other six courses in Allied Health Sciences would also face the same accreditation exercise next year and the Management will do everything that is required to get our programmes accredited by all regulatory bodies and agencies.

Professor Audu disclosed plans by the university management to introduce new courses for the university to have full complement of all other Health related courses to make the University a complete entity in the nearest future.

The University Management expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Honourable Minister of Health Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate for upgrading the Federal Medical Centre, Azare to Teaching Hospital which will serve as a Training ground and facility for the University Students.

He said that the introduction of NELFUND Scheme by the President and the subsequent released of the Funds to the beneficiaries (benefitting) students is highly commendable and timely.

Prof Audu who urged the students to take advantage of the Scheme to ease their studies, appreciated the North East Governors Forum for their support to the University.

"The Forum has facilitated the allocation of a special intervention project for the construction of Centre for Child and Maternal Health in the University, by the North East Development Commission.
We also want to put on record our special appreciation and gratitude to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum for the support he accorded to the University by donating the sum of fifty million Naira (N50,000,000:00) to the University for the purchase of Lab Equipment for the Dentistry Programme (Panthom Heads)", he said.

He further said Governor Zulum has just awarded a contract for the construction of 6 3-Bedrooms houses as visiting professorial quarters in the University and at the same time offering scholarships to all Borno State students in the University.

The FUHSA vice Chancellor also thanked Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state for the introduction of “pre-service scheme” to the MBBS, Dentistry and Nursing Students, requesting the Governor to expand the scope to cover other programmes.

"Let me use this opportunity to show the University’s appreciation of the supports being given to the University by the Bauchi State Government and the Katagum Emirate Council which are a clear manifestation of their seriousness and determination to the development of education as vehicle for transformation", the vice Chancellor stated.

He commended the Multipurpose Badminton club in Bauchi for hosting the tournament for the past ten years for organizing the tournament with support from the mother association, the Association of Badminton clubs in Nigeria and the Bauchi state government.

"We, as participants from various clubs, would like to appreciate the state government for the support and the effort of the Multipurpose Badminton club in organizing and sustaining the annual badminton tournament", Dr Abubakar said.

While describing the hosting of the tournament as not an easy one, Dr. Abubakar recalled that not long ago, the Multipurpose Badminton club organized another tournament in Bauchi where the ABCIN election was held to usher-in new Executive Committee members.

While recalling himself participating in the tournament over the years, I encourage the multipurpose badminton club to continue to organize the tournament to ensure the progress of the game.

He said that the game has recorded steady improvement in terms of organization, adding that the quality of the games has continued to be of very high standard.

"Even the prizes that are awarded during the tournaments have continued to be better each passing year," Dr. Abubakar reiterated.

He said a lot of the players wouldn't have visited Yankari if the tournament had not been held, adding that hundreds of players got the opportunity to visit Yankari as a result of the tournament.

Talking on the health benefits of playing badminton, Dr. Abubakar said physical exercise of any kind is good for the health of a player.

"If you engage yourself in any kind of sport or exercise, it is very good for your health and that's why there is what we call lifestyle medicine whereby if you engage yourself in good sporting activities, it will help you to withstand quite a number of diseases. Even if you have conditions like diabetes, like cardiac problem, you are encourage to do exercise to keep you fit and boost your immunity to fight some of these diseases" the Chairman, Team Yonex Nigeria said.

He said, "In addition to losing weight, badminton game helps one to remain fit especially as one gets older. That is why you can see here, we have first class monarchs, military personnel of the rank of generals and other ranks, high-ranking civil servants, and businessmen, among others. "

Dr. Abubakar who explained that the game of badminton has advantages over other games, stressed that an elderly person who can not play games such as football due to age can afford to play badminton.

"For instance, most of us at this age can not play more strenuous sports such as football but still can play badminton as it is a game that can be played throughout one's life even at 80s. It can be played from childhood to old age, unlike football and other games, "he said.

Dr Abubakar further explained that the badminton competition is played on the bases of age bracket that differentiate older players from the younger ones.

"The reason is because what a younger player can do, an older player can not withstand the stress. That is why the competition is categorised according to age bracket, " he pointed out.

Dr. Abubakar, who further disclosed that as the name implies, "Association of Badminton Clubs In Nigeria (ABCIN), it will continue to be a uniting factor in the country.

"Badminton is a sport out of the numerous sports that are played globally. Within the badminton Community, Association of Badminton Clubs In Nigeria (ABCIN) has succeeded in bringing people together from various parts of the country such that without it, we wouldn't have known each other", he said.

Dr. Abubakar urged ABCIN to collaborate with other games through the Ministry of Sports to encourage others to form clubs that will bring people together in unity.

Malnutrition: UNICEF raises concerns over reported cases of RUTF sales, warns perpetrators

By Samuel Luka, Bauchi

As efforts to address malnutrition among children intensified by the United Nations Children's Fund, People selling the Ready-to-use-Therapautic Food (RUTF) across Nigeria have been warned against the dastardly act.

The UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate who gave the warning in Toro local government area of Bauchi state on Monday shortly after inspecting Nutrition foods for Nursing mothers and children supported by UNICEF, said sellers of the RUTF are committing the offence of felony which is against the law.

Munduate said by selling one pack of the RUTF, the seller has succeeded in killing one child who needs it to stay alive.

She said that RUTF are specially prepared for children, particularly children undergoing treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

"The RUTF are medical Therapeutic Foods which are only good for children. I heard that some people are selling them, but I must warn that if adults take these food they may be affected", Cristian Munduate said.

She described as untrue, the purported believe by some people that the RUTF if taken by adults, is capable of boosting their fertility or making them become stronger.

"I want to say that, that is not true, they may even lose these capacities, because it is for children and not for adults", she reiterated.

The UNICEF Representative in Nigeria called on every good citizen to speak and exposed the the people selling or misusing the RUTF if found by reporting them to the relevant authorities.

"This is a felony, it is a crime and you must know that whenever you sell RUTF, you are killing a child", she emphasized.

Cristian Munduate added that more than half of the children in Bauchi have problems of chronic malnutrition, particularly in children under the age of five whose brain development has been affected as a result of malnutrition.

While stating that malnourished children will have problems of learning and intellectual capacity, a problem that has no way to fix, Cristian Munduate explained that it is important for authorities in the state and the country at large to really take action in reducing chronic malnutrition.

"The second issue is the number of Severe Acute malnutrition at the LGA level. These are children under one year of age and they are about to die because they are very sick and need urgent medical attention to remain alive." She said.

She added that, "What I see is that the people in the community at LGA level do not receive the necessary support like Budgets, but they are still trying. Toro LGA for example is Open defecation Free, but this is done by the efforts of the local authorities and the community, this success is theirs."

Cristian Munduate stressed that, "We really want authorities at different levels to come in and help the different LGAs in Bauchi state. Right now, we have seen many of the wards in Toro LGA that have a food system that is working. This has helped in the prevention of malnutrition in children and women that are pregnant as well as given prosperity to the community."

She stated that, "What UNICEF needs is more commitment from government at all levels, UNICEF is only providing support, but we cannot reach everybody."

"The Nutrition fund needs to be signed in the state so that it can be of benefit to thousands of children. We heard the Governor has shown commitment to the fund which means that if the government puts One Naira, UNICEF will put One Naira for the good of the children," She said.

Cristian Munduate also visited Dandaure village where She commemded efforts of rural women in producing local food to feed and stay healthy as well as their children especially those U-5.

Effective faecal Sludge management, panacea to open defecation practice - UNICEF

By Samuel Luka, Bauchi

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that effective faecal Sludge management is capable of addressing the menace of open defecation.

Giving update on the progress attained in addressing the menace of open defecation in Bauchi state at the Bauchi UNICEF office on Monday, State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Facilitator Supporting the UNICEF, Abdulsalam Abdullahi Mohammed observed that, if wealth can be created from the human waste (faeces) it will lead to attainment of ODF status in the remaining local government areas of the state.

"What will also spark the attainment of ODF by the remaining LGs is trying to create wealth from the waste, having more private sector participation, will solve the problem", he explained.

Mohammed said once people realized that human faeces can be used to create energy or turn it to organic manure to be used for farming activities, open defecation will stopped.

"If there is value in this s**t, if you can tap energy from it, if you can utilize it effectively and turn it to organic manure, we are good to go", he said.

The WASH Facilitator disclosed that currently, companies from Abuja are beginning to come to Bauchi to collaborate with some private sector to put up a farm where they plant fruits and ensure that they stick to using organic fertilizer.t

"Very soon when you see human faeces in Bauchi in the open you will be shocked, you will be seeing as someone throwing away his money. It will interest you to know that UNICEF next big move on sanitation is innovative sanitation drive, let's replicate what has worked well and see how we can improve on having safely managed sanitation that are affordable", he said.

Mohammed said leading innovations and creating opportunities for private sector participation are part of the key drives that UNICEF is actually pushing for.

According to him, after the certification of Nine Local Government Areas as open defecation free (ODF) by the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS), three other LGAs in the state are also at the verge of being certified.

He commended Governor Bala Mohammed's administration for being proactive in ensuring that the state become open defecation free.

Earlier speaking, Nanbam Michael Dawap, Water and Sanitation Officer, UNICEF Bauchi Field office said that the journey to ODF in Bauchi state started over ten years ago and has succeeded in local government areas of the state.

Dawap who explained that the UNICEF supported Bauchi state government to mobilize communities, said Community led total sanitation approach was used to ensure that communiries understand what is open defecation free and its benefits and the dangers of practicing open defecation itself.

She said, without safely managed sanitation, women are prone to attacks, abuse and shaming because, open defecation is not dignifying, especially for women.

"Women don't have a dignified life because where there is no toilet to use a woman is forced to go outside and do open defecation, this is not dignifying, and as a result, she has to go to somewhere to hide, in a nearby bush where she is prone to violent attack, that is not acceptable", she added.
