Youth Day 2020: Youth Stakeholders Connect holds in Anambra State

Anambra State Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Prof Theresa Obiekezie, few weeks ago, received the Leadership of ASATU Youths led by their National President, Comrade Patrick Agha Mba, in her office.

ASATU Youths is the youth wing of the community based group known as Anambra State Association of Town Unions.

Professor Obiekezie who reiterated the importance of ASATU Youths to Grassroots Development noted that it's an ideal channel to reach to youths in all communities in the State.

During the visit, the Commissioner explained that the high rate of unemployment and negative indulgences by youths arise from apathy on issues of skill acquisition and value system.

While calling for attitudinal change, Prof Obiekezie tasked the youths on unity and value reorientation and promised to create platforms for all youth leaders and stakeholders to come together for a unified approach to youth mobilization, development and empowerment.

Today, one of such unique platforms will be hosted at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy as part of the ongoing 2020 International Youth Day Celebration in Anambra State.

The platform tagged "Youth Stakeholders Connect" aims to have all youth leaders and opinion molders on a round table to brainstorm on the way forward for the Anambra Youth.

The outcome of today's event will address ways to take advantage of various empowerment opportunities created by the State Government to lift young people out of poverty and joblessness; eschew corrupt practices in youth leadership; and initiate youth development programs as well as effective engagement for global action.

If you are a Youth Leader or Stakeholder, see you at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy in Awka, Anambra State

Hello Brethren, please give me a minute...
..in all honesty!

We are who we are not just because of what we are made of...
..but importantly because of the mentoring and nurture we absorb!

We rise to greater heights not just because we are good and connected...
..but essentially because of who directs the goodnews and holds the ladder!

We have the Digital Entrepreneurship Office (DEO) in Anambra State not just because we are Digipreneurs...
..but vitally because we have an IT savvy Commissioner for Creative Economy who understands the import of Digital Entrepreneurship!

We are doing greatly at DEO Anambra not just because we have a creative team that Digitalize, Innovate and Disrupt...
..but chiefly because we have a young, articulate and innovative IT Expert as the Coordinating Member!

And today, we are happy not just because we are grateful for the platform and opportunity to learn under this same Man...
..but principally because today is his Birthday, a gentle, understanding and people oriented boss turned elder brother, counselor!

Who's He?

Coronavirus in Anambra State... 40 Things Gov Obiano said today!

A Special Broadcast on Covid-19 by the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 to Update Ndi Anambra on the Latest Development.

1. Ndi Anambra, I am here to give you an update you on our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Anambra State.

2. In my last address to you on Saturdy April 18, 2020, I informed you that the first post treatment test of the Covid-19 Index Case in Anambra State had returned negative.

3. Today, I am delighted to tell you that the second test on our Index Case has also returned negative.

4. Following the NCDC protocol on Covid-19, therefore, I have asked the Commissioner of Health to discharge him from our Protective Care Center.

5. We have also made some arrangements to decontaminate his home to ensure that there is no further incident.

Update on Contact Tracing:

6. Following the good news we have received on our Index Case, we have submitted the samples of the 36 remaining people that had direct contact with him for testing.

7. This is to ensure that we do not leave any loopholes in our fight against this pandemic.

8. I will keep you posted on the outcome of the tests once the results are out.

Re-Strengthening our Strategies against Covid-19:

9. Ndi Anambra, I must commend your resilience, your patience and your cooperation so far in this fight against Coronavirus.

10. However, the danger is not over yet. I count on your support and commitment as we race to the finishing line.

11. To ensure that we are firmly on track, here are the things we must pay attention to –

12.  All our boundaries with neighbouring states remain completely closed.

13. Only people on essential services and haulage trucks with essential commodities are allowed passage after a stringent check and confirmation by the security personnel at the boundaries.

14.  From today onwards, it has become compulsory to wear a face mask in Anambra State.

15. Anyone who is seen outside his home without a face mask shall be guilty of breaking the Anambra State Protocol on Covid-19.

16. This principle shall be enforced by all Traditional rulers, Religious Leaders, the Presidents General, Women Leaders, Market Association Leaders, Youth Association Leaders and every community leader that has influence on our people.

17. We encourage our people to make their own masks to ensure availability of masks. However, polyester and polythene materials must not be used in making masks.

18.  Food markets in Anambra State are to open only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

19. Traders and customers in these markets must always maintain the principles of Social Distancing during the transaction process.

20.  The wholesale medical drug market (Ndi Ogbo Ogwu) in Onitsha is permitted to open only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

21. Please note that any stores/shops located in the markets not dealing on food items or medical drugs remain closed.

22. The security agents have been directed to ensure a rigorous enforcement.

23.  Transport operators, banks and other businesses are expected to assist in the enforcement of Mask Wearing by insisting that their customers wear a mask as a pre-condition for service.

24.  All intercity/intra-community transits remain closed.

25.  All motor parks in the State remain closed.

26.  We also encourage our people to maintain the globally accepted Covid-19 protocol of regular hand-washing, regular use of hand-sanitizers and other social-distancing rules that I have repeatedly communicated in my previous addresses.

27. Ndi Anambra are advised to contact the Anambra State Public Health Emergency Operation Center immediately (PHEOC) once they feel unwell.

28. The PHEOC numbers are 09034728047. 08117567363,09034668319, 08163594310,08145434416. WhatsApp: 09033605959. SMS: 09074285546

Appreciation of Donors.

29. Ndi Anambra I am delighted to acknowledge that our people have continued to respond to our appeal for help and have been making donations to the Covid-19 Special Fund.

30. I am most grateful to you all for your kind support both to the state and to the various communities.

31. Ndi Anambra that is the spirit that will see us through this trying period.

32. We shall keep updating the list of donors to ensure that no one is left out or denied due recognition.

You may visit www.absradiotv.com for details.

Appreciation of Healthcare Workers:

33. Before I end this address, I must not fail to commend our irrepressible healthcare workers who are the only army we have in this special war.

34. These are brilliant men and women who keep sleepless nights that we may sleep with both eyes closed.

35. On behalf of the good people of Anambra State, I thank you for standing strong for us all.

36. Ndi Anambra, we have come a long way on this journey, but we still have some distance left to cover.

37. Let’s all apply ourselves to the task at hand and save the days for ourselves and for our children and their unborn children

39. It shall be well with Anambra State!

God bless Anambra State
God bless Nigeria

A true life story

In 2005, I rejected Electronic Engineering for Agricultural Bioresources Engineering in the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

In fact, I went to UNN to study Botany (now Plant Science and Biotechnology) for a possible switch to Medicine and Surgery, after a year;

But ended up with only options in the Engineering Faculty after a fierce battle in Nigeria's foremost University as a Student Activist cm Politician.

That year, I was cursed by friends & family... I was disowned because of that singular decision.

Those who cared to know my reasons asked why such a "stupid and careless" decision.

I replied, "In 15 years time, the world will go back to Agriculture and all sectors will be dependent on the Agro Value Chain";

And secondly, "with my experience, back then, things being taught in Electrical and Electronic departments would become street knowledge in few years time."

No one understood me. They inferred that I was crazy!

I went into the department called ABE in UNN and focused on how to change the prevailing view of Agriculture as drudgery and improve agro yield in a tech era.

Driven by my vision, I undertook a then "unfortunate" topic as my final year project:

"ICTs Application in Agriculture: A Case Study of Anambra State"

It was huge; so little done around here on ICT as at then, Anambra as a State was so big for a first degree project, and it was time, treasure and talent consuming.

But I delivered; I completed the project but didn't impress my professors at the project defence.

Why? I was speaking abstractly and wasn't presenting the usual but a future seen only by "crazy minds"

That was demoralizing but I didn't burn my final year project scripts; I safeguarded them for only the future can confirm what is seen today.

In the 2012, a man walked into the office of Chief Dazza Udeozo who was then the Chairman of Njikoka Local Government; and I was his Personal Assistant.

Guess what!

That man came all the way from Abuja to visit Schools and libraries within South East Nigeria, and in search of materials on ICTs Application in Agriculture.

He decided to stop over at the Local Government Headquarters, to hail his old time friend, Dazza who is also a senior fellow in Agricultural Economics.

On tabling his mission in the hood, Dazza shouted and summoned me; because I had told him my hurting experience at UNN.

"Fiam", the manuscripts were reawakened; UNN stories retold and ideas shared... I became part of lthe Federal Government's Agricultural Transformation Agenda, ATA.

Riding on that, I found myself at Ahmadu Bello University for a Post Graduate Certificate program on Agricultural Extension Services Delivery sponsored by ATA; and the rest was history!

It was a jolly ride while it lasted!

Fast forward to 2020, that's exactly 15 years after my "stupid and careless" decision... The world is running back to Agriculture!

It's either ICT or Agriculture; and it's even better if it is ICT Application in Agriculture.

Today, I'm a Digipreneur, an Agro-Engineer and a Coach.

Wth oil now at near zero price and 5G technology around the corner; This is the best time to go back to my B. Eng final year project...

ICTs Application in Agriculture: A Case Study of Anambra State
..the abstractness in it is now the reality we are in!

Introducing The Anambra COVID-19 Triangle
..As Healthcare providers' training ends in Anambra State!

As part of proactive measures to battle the COVID-19 Pandemic, healthcare providers in Anambra State have unndergone a 2-day COVID-19 case management master trainers course sponsored by the World Health Organization and the European Union in partnership with the State Ministry of Health.

This is inline with Gov Willie Obiano's charge that "Our armour against COVID-19 is an educated and well-trained healthcare providers."

Speaking after the training which ended yesterday, Honourable Vincent Okpala, the State Commissioner for Health said, "Our promise to you (ndi Anambra) is that we will not disappoint you if the battle comes to our shores."

Furthermore, Okpala explained that, "The Anambra State COVID-19 triangle is a solidarity salute to our fellow healthcare providers fighting in the frontlines in COVID-19 stricken communities across the globe.

"The Anambra COVID-19 triangle depicts the medic team's commitment to use their newly acquired knowledge to keep infection away by breaking the chain of infection with the apex of the triangle," he added.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Anambra State Government has taken huge proactive measures aimed at winning the war if it eventually comes into the State.

These measures range from ban on public gatherings to tax exemptions; from jumbo stimulus package to building and upgrading of special protective centres; amongst others.

No Lockdown in Anambra State.

1. A lot of people have in the last couple of hours been calling government officials in Anambra State to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the rumour that there will be a lockdown in the state from 9am tomorrow, Monday, April 6, 2020. Those peddling the rumour allege that no vehicles will be allowed to move within the state and that food and pharmaceutical as well as medical markets will from 9am tomorrow no longer be permitted to operate. In other words, the state will be on lockdown.

2. This rumour is false and unfounded. The government has not changed its policy on the measures taken to protect our people from the coronavirus which is devastating the world, including Nigeria.

3. Ndi Anambra are enjoined to continue to maintain social distancing by keeping away from people by 6 feet. They are also encouraged to regularly wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap, and pour the water away if it is in a bowel. They are, in addition, advised not to dry their hands with handkerchief or towel because it may be infected. They are also encouraged to use hand sanitiser often. They are enjoined to cover their mouths and noses with disposable tissues while coughing or sneezing. The use of face masks everywhere they go is highly advised.

4. Buses and tricycles remain restricted to the limited number of passengers they are allowed to carry. Our boundaries with other states remain closed.

5. Ndi Anambra have complied very well with the guidelines and directives by the government on how to spread the coronavirus. This is one of the critical reasons why our state has so far been spared the scourge of COVID-19. Let us continue to make Anambra the safest state in Nigeria in every sense of the expression.

God bless Anambra State, the Light of the Nation.

Signed

C. Don Adinuba
Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment.

Gov Obiano earlier today addressed ndi Anambra on Coronavirus... Here are the 53 Things He Said!

1. Ndi Anambra ekenem unu.

2. I am here to update you on the on-going global war against the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the efforts we have made so far to flatten the curve on this virus and shut it out of Anambra State.

3. As you may recall, my last broadcast on this pandemic was on March 19, 2020 when we took our first decisive steps against this menace by announcing the suspension of schools, nightclubs and bars, weddings, funerals, ofala ceremonies and other social events that bring people together in one place.

Update on Testing and Results:

4. Here is an update on what has happened since my last broadcast. In Anambra State, we respect our experts. My Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala has reliably informed me that at this moment in time, our dear state does not have a single recorded case of Coronavirus.

5. Six samples have so far been sent for testing and four of the samples were declared negative. The results of the other two have not been released yet.

6. We have sent three new samples today for testing. Please note that samples are usually taken from what the experts call CASE DESCRIPTION.

7. Case Description is a situation where an individual who has just returned from any of the countries and cities that have serious Covid-19 cases begins to show symptoms of Coronavirus…

8. or a situation where someone who has come in contact with people suffering from Coronavirus begins to show symptoms of the pandemic. These symptoms are usually cough, runny nose, fever and a difficulty in breathing.

9. Samples are usually taken from such people and sent to the testing center. So, far, Anambra is safe. But we shall continue our efforts in testing to ensure that Coronavirus does not take us by surprise.

Update on Isolation Centers:

10. We have successfully set up a 250-bed Isolation Center at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Mbaukwu/Umuawulu and another 16-bed Isolation Centre at the General Hospital Onitsha.

11. By the Grace of God, I shall commission both centers tomorrow. The Onitsha Isolation Centre has been described as one of the best in the country today.

12. At the same time, the Isolation Center at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka is being fitted out to standard just in case we have an outbreak.

13. Meanwhile, we have two Surge Centers at Ekwulobia General Hospital and Umueri General Hospital.

14. Ndi Anambra, I am happy to announce the Management of Fidelity Bank and the Management of Access Bank have both volunteered to equip the Surge Centers at Ekwulobia General Hospital and Umueri General Hospital with a 60-bed facility each that meets the World Health Organization standards on Coronavirus.

15. I have been assured that both facilities shall be up and running within one week. On behalf of Ndi Anambra, I express my profound gratitude to Fidelity Bank and Access Bank for their kind gesture.

Economic Stimulus Package:

16. Ndi Anambra, our response to the threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic is multi-dimensional.

17. We have mounted a massive awareness campaign on all media platforms to enlighten our people on the threat of Coronavirus.

18. We have closed our boundaries with neighbouring states and shut down our 63 major markets in Anambra State to flatten the curve on this virus.

19. We have set up Isolation Centers and equipped them with facilities that meet WHO standards.

20. And finally, we have also rolled out an Economic Stimulus Package to cushion the effect of steps we have taken against the virus on the most vulnerable members of our communities.

21. We have commenced the distribution of 200 bags of rice to each of the 181 communities in Anambra State to be distributed among our senior citizens from 70 years and above.

22. In communities where we have more than 200 people within the specified age bracket, distribution shall start from the oldest to the youngest in the age bracket.

23. Beyond that, we have also given a 10% relief on personal income taxes to businesses in Anambra State for the year 2019.

24. This means that if you have been paying your taxes regularly, you will get a 10% refund of the entire sum you paid in 2019. I have no doubt that this will be of great help to businesses in the state.

Interventions from the Private Sector:

25. Our call for assistance from corporate bodies and successful Ndi Anambra has started yielding results.

26. So far, we have received the following donations in cash and equipment from the following people –
~ UBA Plc – N28, 500,000
~ Ibeto Petrochemical – N10m
~ J I Ejison of Ejison International Ltd - N5m
~ Chief Ken Nwogbo – N5m
~ Chief Daniel Chukwudozie of Dozzy Oil – N2m
~ Senator Victor Umeh – N2m
~ His Royal Highness, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, Igwe Ojoto – N1m
~ Ezeemo Godwin Chukwunenye – N500,000
~ Obinna Okechukwu Nwosu – N3000
~ 7Com Enterprises N2000
~ Dr Ernest Audialor Obiejesi – 4000 Facial Masks and 900 Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

27. Other illustrious indigenes of the state that have pledged to assist the government with Personal Protection Equipment and other medical supplies are; Chief Engineer Arthur Eze, Dr Cosmas Maduka, Chief Innocent Chukwuma (Innoson) Sir Emeka Offor, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu (Chisco), Emma Bishop Okonkwo (Ekulo Group) and Chief Allen Onyema (Air Peace).

28. Ndi Anambra we are still appealing for donations to boost our capacity to overcome the threat posed by this pandemic. We especially need ventilators and Personal Protection Equipment like gloves, goggles for the eyes, apparels and masks.

29. We shall appreciate any intervention that will strengthen our capacity in these areas.

What we shall do next;

30. Ndi Anambra, we are determined to strengthen our campaign against Coronavirus in our dear state with the following measures –

31. 1. We shall soon commence the distribution of 3 million masks to residents of Anambra in the 181 communities in the State.

32. The Igwes and the PGs will assist the government in profiling the tailors in the various communities that will help in mass-producing these masks for distribution to the members of the communities.

33. Our intention in handing out 3 million masks is to ensure that after the 14-day shutdown of the state, no one will step out of their home without wearing a facial mask.

34. The Czech Republic is relying largely on a heavy use of facial masks to minimize the incidence of Coronavirus in its territory.

35. These masks shall be made by our own tailors carefully selected from each of the 181 communities of Anambra State. The modalities for the manufacturing and distribution of the masks shall be worked out and announced subsequently.

36. 2. We shall also commence the fumigation of the 63 markets in Anambra State while the traders are at home.

37. This will help to reduce the toxicity of the business environment and minimize the exposure of our people to different kinds of infections.

38. 3. We are giving a two-month waiver to Keke and shuttle bus operators in the state on the usual permits they pay. The grace period covers the months of April and May, 2020.

39. The leadership of the Tricycle Union and the Bus and Shuttle Bus Drivers Union have also given a two-month waiver to Keke and Shuttle bus drivers.

40. I hope that this will cushion the sudden fall in their income occasioned by the restricted number of passengers they are expected to carry at a time these days. This is also a part of our Economic Stimulus Package for the vulnerable.

41. 4. To ensure that our children are not adversely affected by the closure of schools, we have migrated our classrooms to Radio, television and Facebook.

42. A partnership between the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) and the Ministry of Basic Education is meeting the educational needs of our children with a programme title “Anambra Teaching on Air.” Visit the ABS website for further details.

We are Ready:

43. Finally, Ndi Anambra, learning from the experience of the approaches adopted by France and Lagos in battling this pandemic, we have stockpiled the medicines used in managing outbreaks in both places in case we experience an incident here.

44. I therefore urge you to be calm and ensure adequate compliance with the standard directives on Covid-19 which includes –

45. Wash your hands regularly with soap, use hand-sanitizers regularly, cough and sneeze into your elbows, put on a face mask while going out and most importantly; stay home and stay safe!

46. Before I end this broadcast, I must not fail to thank the entire business community in Anambra State for complying with our directive on Coronavirus.

47. I must also thank the owners of schools, the church, the civil society and traditional rulers who have lent their voices to the enlightenment campaign on coronavirus in their various domains.

48. My gratitude also goes to the members of the Task Force on Covid-19 who have been working day and night to get our dear state ready and of course the Service Commanders of the various security agencies in the state who have been helping us to enforce the standard Covid-19 protocol in the state.

49. In conclusion, Ndi Anambra, I urge you to see the threat of Coronavirus as the greatest threat to us all as one people under God.

50. I urge you therefore, to come together as one and shut out this pandemic from Anambra State. Ndi Anambra, we can do it if we truly come together.

51. In the words of American auto icon, Henry Ford, “coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress but working together is success.”

52. I have no doubt that if we all wash your hands regularly with soap, use hand-sanitizers regularly, cough and sneeze into your elbows, put on a facial mask while going out and most importantly; stay home and stay safe, we shall win this battle and eventually win this war!

53. God bless Anambra State

God Bless Nigeria.
