Birthday Celebration: Urgent Call for Improvement of Rural Library Facilities in Delta North.

We bring to your attention the distressing state of the library facilities in Delta North, particularly in Ibusa, Ogwashi Uku, Isele-Uku, Agbor, Owa Alero, Owa, and Kwale. As concerned members of the Young Citizens of Nigeria, we find it disheartening that these valuable resources are currently in a state of disrepair, neglect, and deteriorating conditions.

In the recent past, Mr. Philip Elueme, our esteemed patron and mentor, led a tour of these libraries alongside Comrade Ekene Okonkwo and several other members of our organization. It was during this eye-opening tour that we witnessed firsthand the alarming and embarrassing state of these facilities. The libraries, once the pride of our communities, now serve as an unfortunate reminder of neglect and missed opportunities.

We firmly believe that libraries play an essential role in the intellectual and educational development of our youth. They are not only a gateway to knowledge but also serve as a safe haven for young citizens seeking solace, information, and inspiration. The sorry state of these libraries, with outdated infrastructure, inadequate resources, and visibly dilapidated facilities, severely hampers our community's access to quality education and intellectual growth.

As we celebrate Mr. Philip Elueme's birthday, we implore the government, NGOs, and other stakeholders to prioritize the revitalization and improvement of these libraries. We humbly request that immediate action be taken to address the following concerns:

1. Renovation and refurbishment: The libraries require urgent repair work to address structural issues, leaking roofs, broken windows, damaged furniture, and other visible signs of deterioration.

2. Access to current resources: Updating and expanding the library's collection of books, journals, magazines, and online resources is crucial to fostering a culture of learning and research.

3. Technological advancements: Equipping the libraries with computers, internet access, and other technology will enable young citizens to develop essential digital literacy skills in an increasingly interconnected world.

4. Staffing and training: Hiring and training competent librarians and support personnel will ensure that the libraries are efficiently managed, providing guidance and assistance to users.

5. Collaborative partnerships: Seek partnerships with local businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations to foster a sense of collective responsibility and garner support for the revitalization efforts.

By addressing these concerns, we firmly believe that we can transform these libraries into vibrant and engaging spaces that empower young citizens with knowledge, promote lifelong learning, and contribute to the overall development of our communities.

We kindly request that you share our urgent appeal with relevant authorities and stakeholders who have the capacity to effect change. Together, let us make a positive difference in the lives of the young citizens of Delta North by providing them with the quality library facilities they deserve.

Coup attempt in Burkina Faso foiled, plotters arrested

Burkina Faso's security and intelligence services foiled a coup attempt on Tuesday, September 26, according to the country's military government.

In a statement read out on state television, it said "a proven coup attempt was foiled on September 26, 2023, by Burkina Faso's intelligence and security services.

"At present, officers and other alleged participants in this destabilisation attempt have been arrested and others are being actively sought".

It said the alleged perpetrators "had the sinister intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging the country into chaos".

The military government said it would seek to shed all possible light on this plot, adding that it regretted “that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature”.

It said while four people had been detained, two were on the run.

The statement added that the regime launched investigation based on “credible allegations about a plot against state security implicating officers.”

“We regret that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature, which aims to hinder the Burkinabe people’s march for sovereignty and total liberation from the terrorist hordes trying to enslave them.”

The junta came to power after two military coups last year, triggered in part by a worsening insurgency by armed groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State that has destabilised Burkina Faso and its neighbours.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the junta leader, seized power on September 30, 2022, the country’s second coup in eight months.

Prophet accused of using charms and live lizard to dodge rent for six months

A Zimbabwean Prophet, Madzibaba Simbarashe Comrade Chinyanga has been accused of using unconventional tactics to evade paying six months’ worth of rent.

It was alleged that he resorted to charms and even used a live monitoring lizard to intimidate his landlord whenever rent was requested.

The landlord who became frustrated with the Prophet's antics, sought assistance from a neighbour who was subsequently assaulted by Madzibaba Simbarashe. That proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as the assault backfired.

The landlord reported the matter to the police, prompting residents to take action. They confronted Madzibaba Chinyanga, demanding that the police uncover the tools of his mysterious trade. The determined residents collaborated to remove his belongings from the property and ultimately evicted him.

Madzibaba Chinyanga’s wife was also compelled to relocate their belongings and find alternative accommodation due to the situation.

Subsequently, he was detained at St Mary’s Police Station on charges of assault. A neighbour who spoke to H-Metro said;

"He wasn’t paying rent, taking advantage of having powers to cause misfortune to his landlord since he is young following the death of his parents. We do not want him anymore in our area because he has divided a number of families with falsehoods.”

Breaking News: Ebonyi Tribunal Strikes Out APGA, Odoh's Petition Against Gov Nwifuru

The Ebonyi State Election Petitions Tribunal has struck out the petition filed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and its governorship candidate, Bernard Odoh, against the election of Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The tribunal ruled that all the requests made by the applicants were pre-election issues and consequently dismissed them.

The judgment on the second petition brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Ifeanyi Odii, against Nwifuru, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the election, is ongoing.

The tribunal's decision is a setback for APGA and Odoh, who had alleged that Nwifuru was not qualified to contest the election and that there were irregularities in the conduct of the poll.

However, the APGA and its candidate may still have the option to appeal the tribunal's decision to the Court of Appeal.

Supreme Court Gutted by Early Morning Fire

The Supreme Court of Nigeria was gutted by an early morning fire on Monday, September 25, 2023. The fire affected the chambers of some of the justices of the apex court, as well as some of their offices.

The fire started around 6:00 AM and was detected by cleaners and other workers who had arrived early for work. The workers used the fire extinguishers in the building to try to put out the fire, but they were unsuccessful. They also contacted the National Judicial Council and the Fire Service office in Wuse 2 for help.

The Fire Service eventually arrived and extinguished the fire, but not before it had caused significant damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Supreme Court is located in the Three Arms Zone of Abuja, which also houses the Presidential Villa and the National Assembly. The Three Arms Zone is one of the most secure areas in Nigeria, so the fire is a major security concern.

The fire is also a major blow to the Nigerian judiciary. The Supreme Court is the highest court in Nigeria, and it has the final say on all legal matters. The fire has caused significant damage to the court's infrastructure and has disrupted its operations.

The Nigerian government has promised to investigate the fire and to bring the perpetrators to justice. The government has also promised to provide the Supreme Court with the resources it needs to rebuild and to resume its operations as soon as possible.

"She Treated Me Like A S3x Slave' — 39 Year Old Egyptian Man Reveals Reason For Ending Marriage To 83 Year Old British Pensioner

According to a recent Daily Mail article, a 39-year-old Egyptian man named Mohamed Ibriham has revealed that he ended his marriage to an 83-year-old British pensioner named Iris Jones because she treated him like a "s*x slave."

Ibriham and Jones met on Facebook in 2019 and got married a year later. They were initially featured in the media for their unusual relationship, but it soon became clear that things were not going well behind closed doors.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Ibriham said that Jones was "obsessed with s£x" and that she demanded s£x from him "multiple times a day." He also claimed that she was emotionally abusive and would often call him names and belittle him.

Ibriham said that he eventually decided to end the marriage because he couldn't take the abuse anymore. He packed his bags and left Jones's home in the middle of the night.

Jones has denied Ibriham's allegations, calling them "lies" and "fabrications." She has also said that she is "heartbroken" by the divorce and that she still loves Ibriham very much.

The couple's divorce proceedings are currently underway.

US warns Americans against visiting Abia State and 17 Nigerian States due to insecurity

The US Department of State has issued new security advice to its citizens.

In a new release, the department advised Americans to reconsider travelling to Nigeria “due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed gangs.”

According to the release, the department advised its citizens against travelling to Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and northern Adamawa states due to terr0rism and k!dnapping; Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states due to k!dnapping; Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers states (with the exception of Port Harcourt) due to crime, k!dnapping, and armed gangs.

It further noted that “violent crime – such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage taking, roadside banditry, and r@pe – is common throughout the country.”

The Department, however, advised citizens who still choose to travel to Nigeria to: “Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Nigerian visa, if needed. Regarding Borno, Yobe, Kogi, and Northern Adamawa states, the US insisted that the security situation in the states was “fluid and unpredictable due to widespread terrorist activity, inter-communal violence, and kidnapping. Security operations to counter these threats may occur without warning.”

World Bank Approves Another $700m Loan For Nigeria

The World Bank has approved another $700 million loan for Nigeria. This brings the total amount of loans approved by the World Bank for Nigeria in 2023 to $2.15 billion.

The new loan is to be used to support the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) program, which aims to improve secondary education opportunities for girls in targeted states. The AGILE program provides financial assistance to girls' families to help cover the costs of education, as well as life skills training and mentorship programs.

The World Bank has said that the new loan will help to scale up the AGILE program and reach more girls. The bank has also said that the loan will support the Nigerian government's efforts to improve gender equality and educational attainment for girls.

The approval of the new loan has been welcomed by some Nigerians, who see it as a sign of the World Bank's confidence in the Nigerian economy. However, others have expressed concerns about the country's growing debt burden.

Nigeria's public debt is currently estimated to be around $400 billion, or 35% of GDP. The World Bank has warned that Nigeria needs to take steps to reduce its debt burden in order to maintain sustainable economic growth.
