President Tinubu has said that despite the pains Nigerians are experiencing as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy, things will get better.

The President gave the assurance in Imo state where he attended the inauguration of the state governor for a second term on Monday, January 15.

Speaking to guests at the inauguration, the President said;

‘’You have gone through twists and turns of democracy, You have been through some aspects of hard decisions.

Each time I watch the news and see one pain or the order associated with the removal of subsidy, just remember that among you, your families are pregnant people . The day of birth is the day of pain. You go through the labour pain, When you hear the voice of the baby, your pains are gone and your are relieved. Nigeria is at it.

The last 40 years, some very few people were cornering our common wealth, calling it subsidy, I call it wasteful and thievery. But right now, we are going through the pain, We are sharing that pain. I am here to guarantee you that hope, things are looking up, things are getting better and it will get greater and better for the common good of the Nigerian public. We just need to work hard. Be more patient, persevere and have consistency in governance.‘’

ISSUE:

Former minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Pantami, has blamed Nigerian police and other security agencies for failing to utilise data generated from National Identity Number (NIN) linked to the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) in tracking kidnappers and curbing other crimes involving the use of a phone.

In 2020, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime ordered SIMs to be linked to the NIN of every citizen. Citizens who failed to link their SIM to NIN had their lines disconnected.

Bashir Ahmad, the media aide to Mr Buhari, in a tweet on Sunday, raised the alarm on sustained kidnappings for ransom, calling for “new legislation or the revision of current laws to mandate the death penalty as punishment for banditry and kidnapping.”

Responding to Mr Ahmad’s tweet, , however, said, “How about first reaching out to your kinsman to know why Nigerians queued up for months to secure NIN.”

Reacting to Mr Mentus’s tweet, Mr Pantami blamed security agencies for not utilising the NIN-SIM data to tackle rising kidnapping for ransom and banditry.

“NIN-SIM policy has been working. However, the relevant institutions fighting criminality are to be requested to ensure they utilise it effectively when a crime is committed. Lack of utilising it is the main problem, not the policy.” Mr Pantami said.

The former minister, who decried the non-utilisation of the policy, claimed criminals threatened his life for reintroducing it.

He said, “On the lack of utilisation, I am more worried than anyone, as my life was threatened by criminals for reintroducing it, including on BBC Hausa & and national dailies; I resisted and ensured its implementation.”

“If it is not being utilised by the relevant institutions in charge of securing lives and property, then I am more frustrated than any person, as I sacrificed my life and ignored all the threats to life. This is just a point out of 100 on the policy,” the former minister added.

Mr Pantami, under the former Buhari regime, championed the NIN registration policy that saw citizens link their NIN to their SIMs, vowing it would be instrumental to curbing banditry, kidnapping and other forms of crimes involving the use of the telephone.

However, kidnappers still demand and coordinate ransom-taking with the use of phones without being apprehended despite SIM-NIN data.

The Minister of Trade, Industry and Investments, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite has expressed serious concerns over the hike in prices of food commodities in the country while expressing the Federal Government’s intention to check the ugly trend.

She remarked when she visited Kano on Thursday to identify the causes of high prices of foodstuffs and see how the Federal Government could come to the rescue.

The Minister, who interacted with stakeholders, explained the plans of the present administration to enhance job creation and enhance the value of commodities to meet export standards.

“We have come here to look at the market and see why food prices have gone up because we have gotten reports of the increase in prices in the markets.

“And also to collaborate with marketers and traders and how we can ensure that there is adequate food provision.

“They are very instrumental and key to our food security agenda. It is also very important and key to the products for export, which is very important to my ministry in terms of growing export, and finished products.

“The president has also charged us to ensure that exports of raw materials are improved through the export of value-added products.

“As most of our commodities are rejected we want to find out how we can improve them to standard.

“We are here on a stakeholder engagement to find out how we can come in, to see how we can increase the amount of export to foreign countries” she stated.

Former governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has attributed the spate of insecurity across the country to the erroneous belief by state governors that security vote is pocket money for them.

Ngige said this during a chat with journalists at the sideline of the Ojoto Ofala Festival, held at the Ojoto community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, accusing state chief executives of using security votes for purposes outside its intention.

Insisting that security vote is not pocket money for state governors, Ngige said, “Security votes are meant to be spent by state governors to stabilise security in their different states. Security votes are not pocket money, but some governors have converted them to personal money.

“It is meant to maintain the security equilibrium of their states or homeland. For instance, the governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, is trying on security. But I have told him to do more.

“Security is like information, publicity, when you are spending money on publicity, you won’t see it, it is not tangible, but you will see the effect. If you put stability in your security, you will see prosperity following it, because there will be economic activities.

“Insecurity has made economic activities to be destabilised in the South-East zone in the past 18 months, coupled with the sit-at-home; and all these activities by non-state actors who hide under the camouflage of Nnamdi Kanu to perpetrate criminality.”

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has threatened to sue President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if he fails to probe the alleged payment of N585,189,500.00 into a private account by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu.

Kolawole Oluwadare, Deputy Director of SERAP, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Pmnews.ng had reported that Betta Edu confirmed disbursing N585,189,500.00 meant for vulnerable people in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, and Ogun states into a private account.

However, Edu insisted that the payment followed due process.

Meanwhile, SERAP said that the minister’s action was against Chapter 7, Section 713 of the Federal Government’s Financial Regulations 2009, which notes, ‘Personal money shall in no circumstances be paid into a government bank account, nor shall any public money be paid into a private account’.

Accordingly, SERAP urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, and appropriate anti-corruption agencies to promptly and thoroughly conduct a probe.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest”.

Recall that Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, said Edu was not supposed to make N585,198,500.00 into a private account.

Meanwhile, Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, says the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, should resign for “betraying the confidence reposed in her”.

Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in a statement on Sunday, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to speed up the ongoing investigation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and charged all indicted persons to court.

The senior lawyer described as an “extremely embarrassing drama”, the circumstances surrounding Edu’s alleged involvement in the approval of N585,198,500.00 to be disbursed into a personal account.

Also, The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has issued a statement reaffirming the commitment of the Federal Government to transparency and accountability in the wake of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu controversy.

In the statement personally signed by Minister Idris, he conveyed President Tinubu's directive for a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the alleged payment of funds into a private account by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The lawmaker representing Delta North senatorial district, Ned Nwoko, has called for the introduction of a bill that allows civilians to own and carry fi****ms.

He noted that the bill was important following the security challenges, particularly the recent Plateau killings of December 24, where no less than 100 civilians were killed in the attack.

He said, “An amendment bill allowing civilian firearm ownership must be introduced in the Senate.

“My bill on self-defense and fi****ms ownership regulation, currently listed in the Senate awaiting its first reading, deals with this pressing issue.

“I am pleased that the topic has gained national significance, sparking diverse opinions and discussions that predominantly fall into two camps – one in opposition and the other in support.”

Senator Nwoko added, “It’s evident that the existing security measures have not been sufficient in safeguarding our communities.

“Allowing law-abiding citizens to possess fi****ms could potentially provide a sense of security and a means to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.”

The Delta lawmaker noted that to avoid sabotage and abuse, several streams of control must be exercised to ensure control.

He said, “However, it is crucial to emphasise that the initiative to permit firearm ownership is accompanied by stringent regulations and comprehensive training.

“This approach ensures that fi****ms are in the hands of responsible individuals who understand the gravity of such ownership and are equipped to handle these weapons safely.

“The illegal smuggling of arms is a significant concern due to the prohibition on bearing arms. Introducing licensed dealerships for fi****ms could potentially address this issue by creating a regulated avenue for legal firearm acquisition.”

He added, “This move not only seeks to curtail illegal arms trafficking but also provides an opportunity for generating income through licensing fees and taxes imposed on these dealerships.

“The revenue generated from licensing fees and taxes on firearm dealerships could be allocated towards bolstering law enforcement agencies, improving security infrastructure, and implementing initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity.”

Nwoko explained that the qualifications for firearm ownership must involve obtaining references from four medical doctors affirming mental soundness, endorsement from the local government chairman for community validation, a traditional leader’s (such as the king) guarantor role emphasising cultural trust, and confirmation by the Divisional Police Officer to verify the absence of criminal involvement.

A senator from Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has appealed to Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu’s administration more time to fix the economy.

Mr Uzor-Kalu, a former chief whip of the Senate, acknowledged that Nigerians were going economic hardship.

The senator spoke on Tuesday in Koli-Edda in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State when he visited the chairperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro-Emegha.

Mr Kalu, a former Abia State governor, said Mr Tinubu was working hard to reposition the country’s economy and restore its lost glory, adding that Nigerians should give the president time.

“The APC government is cutting the cloth into pieces. Before you sew a cloth you will first cut it into pieces; so, Tinubu is busy cutting the cloth into pieces.

“So, give us another three years or two years; people are suffering. We understand that, give us more two years for the cloth we want to sew to be sewn very well,” Mr Kalu said.

The senator spoke on why the National Assembly added billions of naira to the 2024 budget.

“We said that we are going to do a census and Nigeria has put several billions of naira in planning for the national census in 2023, and if we did not vote money for the conduct of the exercise, Nigeria will be losing about N289 billion,” he said.

The senator urged Nigerian youths to be agents of positive change, by shunning social vices and any act that is capable of breaching the peace and security of the country.
