NUJ to Decorate Gov. Okpebholo as Grand Patron on Feb 8

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, will be formally decorated as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the 2025 Edo State Journalists Classic Dinner.

The highlight of the event will be the official decoration, to be conducted by the National President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya.

The prestigious ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 8, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Uyi Grand International Event Centre, Osagiede Street, GRA, Benin City. It is expected to draw key stakeholders from within and beyond the state.

Notable dignitaries expected at the event include Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; APC National Women Leader, Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Idele Alile; and NUJ Deputy National President, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde.

In a statement signed by Edo NUJ Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, the union confirmed that members of the 15 chapels under the Edo State Council of the NUJ are already mobilizing to attend the landmark occasion, which will feature several side attractions.

....Says "I am not part of turbaning ceremony"

The suspended Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the State Flood Erosion and Watershed Management Agency (FEWMA), Mr. Ahmed Musa, yesterday, said he was not part of the turbaning ceremony and appointment of Chiefs and Village Heads by the Aidenogie of South-Ibie Kingdom, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

A source said this in Benin city while setting the record straight as they relate to the ceremony that led to his suspension as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of FEWMA.

The source said that, as the CEO of FEWMA in the state, Ahmed only went to Edo North on Friday for the purpose of inspecting some gully erosion sites contrary to the insinuations that he went for a turbaning ceremony.

The source who doesn't want his name in print said that parts of the instructions from the European Investment Bank (EIB) programme is for them to liaise with the traditional institutions in every communities that they have to work on their gully sites in order to avoid unnecessary conflict of interest, adding that, that was why he visited the traditional ruler, moreover, dispelling any involvement of Musa regarding any turbaning ceremony.

"And also, when we normally visit communities, the EIB World Bank standard is that, you must visit the community services and who are the community services? It has to start with the traditional institutions.

"So, he (Ahmed) visited the three traditional institutions- the palaces of Ogieneni of Uzairue kingdom; the Otaru of Auchi kingdom and finally the Aidonogie of South Ibie Kingdom respectively where we had reports on gully erosion sites in Edo North. And that is where he went to before proceeding to the gully sites at water tanker road, off Warake road (Auchi); Ogwokhai village/off old Igarra road, GRA Auchi and gully sites in south Ibie within Etsako west.

"As mark of respect to the acting chairman of etsako west local government, Hon Ahmed Musa went straight to the council led the Edo FEWMA team to pay homage to Mr. Valentine who later accompanied Ahmed to the palaces.

"The team were brainstorming on the continuation of inspection to other sites such as Ayogwiri gully, water board site and others at night when the news of suspension broke out which abruptly cut short the visitation as earlier scheduled.

"He is not aware of any turbaning ceremony.

The source however stated that Musa had since reaffirmed his loyalty to the Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo and other members of his government saying that, "he (Musa) is so sorry for whatever that has happened and that, he is ever ready to work with him to deliver on his (Okpebholo) electioneering campaign promises to the people of the state.

GOVERNMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

It is hereby announced for the information of the General Public that the Edo State Secret Cult (Prohibition Law) 2018 has been repealed by the Edo State House of Assembly.

By virtue of the repeal, the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025 has been passed by the Edo State House of Assembly and signed into Law by the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo effective from 24th January, 2025.

Please be informed that in the new Law, there is provision for stiffer penalties for anyone found guilty of secret cult related offences in the State.

Section 5 of the Law provides for twenty-one (21) years imprisonment for financial and material sponsors of secret cults.
Section 6 of the Law provides for ten (10) years imprisonment for those who knowingly habour members of a secret cult or permit a secret cult meeting or activities to be held in house, building or place over which they have control. In addition to the ten (10) years imprisonment, such persons will have their properties confiscated and demolished by the State Government.

Section 12 of the Law clearly states that, “Any person being a cultist under Section 4, who assaults, injures, maims, or kills any person (s) or destroy any property in furtherance of the activities of any Secret Cult, is guilty of an offence and is liable to Twenty-One (21) years imprisonment without an option of fine and in the case of any fatality, the perpetrator (s) shall be liable to death upon conviction and any properties in his name as well as his place of residence shall be confiscated and demolished by the State Government”

The general public is, by this notice, advised to be guided and desist from acts inimical to the peace, growth and development of Edo State.
