The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Federal Capital Territory command has intercepted 10 individuals suspected to be victims of human trafficking and allegedly being prepared for migration abroad.

The command spokesperson, Samuel Idoko, who made this known in a statement on Monday, April 22, 2024, said NSCDC officers intercepted the group at Zuba motor park in Abuja upon their return from Minna, Niger State, where they had purportedly gone to process their international passports as directed by their sponsor.

The victims, aged between 24 and 34, included one male and nine females, all claiming to be from Ondo State. Each of them had paid eighty thousand naira for the procurement of their international passports.
The suspects were promised migration abroad for ready-made jobs, particularly in North Africa and Canada, by an unidentified sponsor residing in Okitipupa, Ondo State.

The embattled immediate past Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, says he would have appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja to answer to the
19-count charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, but is afraid he would be arrested

Though Bello was absent for his arraignment today April 23, he briefed a team of lawyers who addressed the court on his behalf. A member of his legal team, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, told the court that his client would have made himself available for the proceedings, but was afraid that he would be arrested.

"The defendant wants to come to court but he is afraid that there is an order of arrest hanging on his head," Adedipe, SAN, submitted.
Adesipe then appealed to the court to set aside the exparte order of arrest it earlier issued against the former governor.

The lawyer contended that as at the time the order of arrest was made, the charge had not been served on his client as required by the law.
He argued that it was only at the resumed proceedings on Tuesday that the court okayed substituted service of the charge on the defendant, through his lawyer.

"As at the time the warrant was issued, the order for substituted service had not been made. That order was just made this morning. A warrant of arrest should not be hanging on his neck when we leave this court," counsel to the defendant added.

According to him, the Federal Government did not consult the 36 States of the federation before it enacted the EFCC Act through the National Assembly. He argued that section 12 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, required the various Houses of Assembly of states to ratify the Act before it could become operative.

"This is a very serious matter that borders on the constitution and the tenets of federalism. It has to be resolved because as it stands, the EFCC is an illegal organization," Bello's lawyer added.

However, EFCC's lawyer, Mr. Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, urged the court to refuse the application, insisting that the warrant of arrest should not be set aside until the defendant makes himself available for his trial.

21/04/2024

The Federal Government is set to receive around $2.2 billion single-digit interest loan from the World bank and another budget support facility from the African Development Bank.

Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, disclosed this during a press briefing at the end of Nigeria’s activities at the World Bank/International Monetary Fund Spring meeting in Washington DC, the United States on Saturday.

Speaking on the sources of international funding to the Nigerian economy, Edun listed diaspora remittances, foreign portfolio investments, and facilities from the World Bank and other international development partners.

He stated, “We have qualified for the processing just this week to the Board of Directors of the World bank of a total package of $2.25 billion of what you can call ‘the closest you can get to a free lunch’- virtually a grant. It’s for about 10- 20 years moratorium and about 1% interest.

In addition, there is a similar budgetary support – low-interest funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and, clearly, there are ongoing discussions with foreign direct investors across many sectors.”

Edun also tapped issuing dollar-denominated securities specifically targeted at Nigerians in the diaspora and those with foreign-denominated savings in Nigeria as another measure to attract forex inflows into the country.

He further highlighted the efforts of the fiscal side of the economy in complimenting the recent monetary policy reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the minister, the issuing of government securities at an interest rate closer to the CBN’s monetary policy rate is an indication of the collaboration between both sides of the economy in tackling inflation in the country and attracting forex inflows.

Some civil society organisations have condemned what they described as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s anti-democratic approaches to issues of law enforcement against a former Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello.

It also condemned the unjust application of state power by the Federal Government.

This came on the heels of a notice issued by the EFCC declaring Bello wanted for offences “in connection with an alleged case of money laundering to the tune of N80.2bn.”

The embattled former governor was placed on the watch list of the Nigerian Immigration Service while all police officers attached to him have equally been withdrawn by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

However, the CSOs, numbering over 120, along with their members and supporters who hit the streets of Lagos on Saturday, faulted the actions of the Federal Government in the ongoing face-off between the EFCC and the former governor.

The press conference was led by the Chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, Debo Adeniran; Sina Loremikan (Campaign Against Impunity), Declan Ihekhaire (Activists for Good Governance), Gbenga Soloki (CADOV), Ochiaga Ohaneze (Ohaneze Youth Council) and Funmi Jolade (Women Democratic Vanguard).

Others present were Kola Abe (Centre for Socioeconomic Rights), Ologun Ayodeji (Transparency and Accountability Group), Femi Lawson (Centre for Public Accountability), and Gbenga Ganzallo (Media Rights Campaign), among others.

Speaking on the issue, Adeniran pointed out that the EFCC did not send a letter of invitation to Bello, thus the allegation that he evaded an arrest does not exist.

“Someone who was never invited, who has a valid court order restraining his arrest and harassment, among other reliefs, until the determination of the court case, could not be said to be evading arrest. It is deliberate misinformation to turn the public against the governor.

“If the FG continues in its iniquitous way of trampling on the rule of law by undermining our judicial system, we will mobilise a much larger number of Nigerians to join this pro-democracy struggle. It concerns all Nigerians because we don’t know who the next victim may be,” Adeniran noted.

The activist also called on the Federal Government to first obey all the court orders preceding their actions in court and then go ahead to vacate them through due process of law.

“There is no point in endangering anyone’s life unnecessarily because that’s the situation we believe that Yahaya Bello is in now. If the government doesn’t handle this matter carefully, it may shoot itself in the foot and put all Nigerians in collective injury.

“We have been on the side of the EFCC in many cases without gratification or prompting. But in this case, we insist that the EFCC is disregarding the rule of law and creating room for anarchy. And this must not be allowed to stand,” Adeniran added.

Also speaking, one of the lead activists, Gbenga Soloki, said, “If the FG insists on inviting the military to intervene in a civil case involving a citizen, they should return power to the military so that we know that we are back to ground zero.”

Nollywood actress, Stella Udeze has offered a simple explanation as to why some actresses don’t have happy relationships or why their relationships hardly ever work out well.

According to her, it is entirely not the fault of the women but a general perception of women in Nollywood.

“Some actresses don’t seem to have a happy relationship because of trust issues. In Nigeria, 80 percent of men feel that being an actress makes you a pr******te.

“They should learn to differentiate the good from the bad. We can’t deny the fact that we are exposed to the world. I think when people stop to have this impression about them they will realise we can have the best relationships, Udeze explains in a chat with Potpourri.

The actress admits there are bad eggs but refuses to accept that pr******tes and ‘runs girls” have invaded the industry.

“That is why I said earlier that people should learn to differentiate the good from the bad, if truly pr******tes have invaded Nollywood. There are many good women who are wife material as many abound who are enjoying a happy marriage,” she says.

Speaking about herself and how she handles her relationships, states, “I am a woman who focuses her mind differently using her senses in every situation. When things around me feel right I stay, if not, I will kindly walk away.”

Stella Udeze started acting in 2014 and she has featured in movies like “Before Getting Married” “Bleeding king” “A week to my wedding” “Melting point” “Double stud” amongst many others.

With Naira appreciating to N1, 300 to the dollar thus giving a ray of hope that the economy is recovering, Nigerians, including farmers and Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, are puzzled that the pleasing development was yet to reflect on food production and prices.

They pointed out that prices of farm inputs are still very high while interest rates are far above farmers can afford among other factors.
However, they suggested how government can ensure the appreciation of the Naira is sustained to eventually impact on food production and make prices affordable by Nigerians.

Naira has appreciated from close to N2, 000/N over the past four weeks to N1, 300/N, gaining about N700.

Stronger Naira, higher purchasing power, and more food to buy – AFAN

The National President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Kabir, said stronger Naira will lead to higher purchasing power and more food would be bought.

Kabir said: “The stronger the Naira the higher its purchasing power and the more food you can buy with it, therefore, food will become more affordable, which is a prerequisite for food security.”

He also expressed hope that, “Indeed, it is pretty obvious that these costs will come down which will make the price of food items to come down as well.

“We can safely assume that a stronger Naira connotes cheaper inputs and by implication lower production cost to the farmer and therefore cheaper and more affordable food to Nigerians.”

However, he suggested, “Government should continue providing the enabling environment for production by ensuring that energy becomes readily available and affordable.”

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has placed Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi, on a watchlist.

The police headquarters in Abuja has also “ordered the withdrawal of all men attached to his excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, former executive governor of Kogi state”.

Bello was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 18 after his absence from the federal high court in Abuja stalled his arraignment.

The anti-graft agency alleges that Bello, alongside Alli Bello, chief of staff to Usman Ododo, governor of Kogi; and one Daudu Suleiman, diverted about N80.2 billion belonging to the Kogi government.

In a statement signed by DS Umar, assistant comptroller of immigration, on behalf of Kemi Nandap, comptroller-general of the NIS, the agency said “the above named person has been placed on watch list”.

“The subject is being prosecuted for breach of trust and money laundering. If seen at any entry or exit point, he should be arrested and referred to the Director of Investigation for further action,” the statement reads.

On April 17, the EFCC ended its siege on Bello’s residence in Abuja after Usman Ododo, governor of Kogi, arrived at the house and was later seen leaving with his predecessor.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed all Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre owners to arrest any parent found near any of their facilities during the 2024 UTME exercise.

The order was given by the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Isaq Oloyede, during a virtual meeting he had on Wednesday with operators and owners of the CBT centres.
In a statement by the spokesman of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, the step is to prevent some parents from intruding into the conduct of the exam.

Also, candidates of parents found to breach the directive and intrude would also be disqualified from writing the exam.

“This measure is necessary as it has been discovered over time that many of these intruding parents are facilitators of examination infractions while others have, by their actions, disrupted the Board’s examinations in the past. Some miscreants also disguise themselves as parents to infiltrate the centres to perpetrate all forms of infractions,” the statement read in part.

Also, security agents are to work with CBT owners to ensure the smooth running of the exercise.

The Lagos State Police Force has issued an apology following a mix-up regarding the alleged arrest of popular disc jockey DJ Switch.

Earlier reports had circulated on Thursday claiming that DJ Switch had been arrested for alleged assault.

DJ Switch promptly refuted these reports, vehemently denying any involvement in such incidents and warning of legal action against those spreading false rumors.

She wrote, “I was woken up by a barrage of calls and text this morning. I wondered why because I know today is not my birthday. Only to find that I, have been arrested.

“One of the links that was sent to me alleged that I had assaulted the police. Now, while I am not a fan of many of our police men and women, I do not condone nor do I support violence against the police.

“That being said, my lawyers have screenshotted every blog they can find this false news and this is defamation of my character. These blogs have till end of day to take down this false news and kindly replace with a post correcting their mistake. I am not looking for cheap publicity, I hate clout chasing and I actually am not an ass because I was advised to sue immediately which would cost them all a lot. So please do the needful and let us learn.”

In a brief statement on social media platform X, Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police spokesperson, admitted that there was a mixup leading to the “misleading” reports.
