Encryptocates (Encryption Advocates) Webinar Series (EWS) is a media-driven engagement vehicle to ensure that the internet user (public or private sector) is empowered to understand the need for encryption and spread the values, one sector at a time. Such advocates will be assigned or requested to adopt the train-the-trainer approach, by ensuring that more netizens understand the need for encryption.
The Declaration of Principles of Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa establishes or affirms the principles for anchoring the rights to freedom of expression and access to information in conformance with Article 9 of the African Charter which guarantees individuals the right to receive information as well as the right to express and disseminate information.
The African Declaration of Internet Rights and Freedoms declares 13 key principles regarding Human Rights on the Internet. The declaration applies to all governments, “regional and sub-regional bodies, national governments, civil society organizations, media institutions, and relevant Internet companies”.
At our presentation at RightsCON 2023, we discovered that government officials and business organizations could help change the narrative if nudged in the right direction. Thus, this project will use all available platforms of orientation, dialogue, and situational analysis to address the need for supporting Encryption everywhere.
Working with partners, DNS Africa Resource Center, using its SENDiWSA Platform, will push EWS as a drive to develop approaches and advocate the use of self-paced platforms provided by the Internet Society, all year round.
It would also align with existing and new platforms to promote a monthly Online Radio, syndicated with various video tubes (or TeliViCast, meaning transmitted by video broadcast online; coined by Adebunmi Akinbo) for the purpose of the project.
Purpose :
1. Create, build, orientate, and engage Encryption Advocates.
2. Develop Toolkits and approaches to self-paced learning platforms.
3. Focus on policies that affect encryption and encryption technologies.
4. Promote Capacity Building for Netizens and the Next Generations.
Goal:
The soul of the internet is encryption; sustaining advocates to protect digital rights and support the growth of the digital economy, creating a win-win solution for extending encryption empowerment to everyone, everywhere, one sector at a time.
We are starting with a focus on law-making institutions. The Public Sector is targeted to create a domino effect that would involve staff, legislators, and senators. This would be carried out with Schools and Institutions of learning too, as well as Stakeholders.
