Following the release of the National HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) report, which recorded a 5.5 percent Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) prevalence in Akwa Ibom State, the state government, through the Ministry of Health and Akwa Ibom State Agency for Control of AIDS (AKSACA), has commissioned the Digital HIV Situation Room, tricycles, motorcycles and other equipment for use in the HIV surge intervention in the State.
The event held at the weekend on the premises of the State Ministry of Health State Secretariat, Uyo.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, said that, the exercise was a demonstration of government commitment to the health of every citizen of Akwa Ibom State.

He further noted that, the items were made available through funding from the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the HIV surge response currently being implemented by Family Health International (FHI360) under the Strengthening Integrated Delivery of HIV/AIDS Services (SIDHAS) project, in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State government.

The SSG noted that Akwa Ibom state has taken the lead in the surge response with FHI360 and other USAID implementing partners, providing technical assistance towards achieving HIV epidemic control.

Other items included, 21 tricycles and 10 motorcycles for rural logistics and transportation, 23 tele-video conferencing and communication equipment, 39 solar desktops for e-clinics, 1000 pre-loaded closed user group (CUG) phones with registered SIM cards and 25 shelf cabinets were commissioned for the same purpose.

He described the HIV Digital Situation Room as the “HIV/AIDS RADAR”, which is the first of its kind in the country; adding that, people can be wealthy when they are healthy.

The governor representative commended the effort of the United States Government towards the state and thanked FHI360 for leading the surge response together with other USAID implementing partners and stakeholders.

The commissioning event was part of the 10th Expanded SIDHAS Project Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting and the Akwa Ibom State Joint Community Advisory Committee (AKSCAC) meeting.

Earlier, the state commissioner for Health, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, commended the Governor, Director General (DG) of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Gambo Aliyu, the United State Agency for International Development (USAID), FHI360 and key stakeholders for making the event a success.

He promised to put the items to good use in the health facilities, with the sole aim of striving towards the goal of achieving HIV control in the state.

The State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has constituted transition committees for the 31 Local Government Councils in the State. The newly constituted Local Government Caretaker Committees were sworn-in on Tuesday 14th July 2015 in a move necessitated by the resolution of the House of Assembly to dissolve the former Local Government Council leadership at the expiration of its tenure.

At an event held at the Banquet Hall, Government House Uyo, the Governor thanked the immediate past council leadership for their service to the state and country at large. He pointed out that some past members were retained for experience which cannot be bought, to rub off on the fresh faces. He also informed the State that in the hierarchy of the newly constituted transition committee, the Chairmen are the heads of their councils, followed by the Secretaries, while the members are all of equal standing and urged the chairmen to inaugurate their own transition council by Wednesday to avoid a vacuum.

Mr Udom Emmanuel urged the appointees that the least expected from them would be to prevent the vandalization of projects as well as the provision of social services such as rehabilitation of rural roads, primary healthcare and rural electrification, since their tenures may not be long enough to embark on and complete capital projects.

His Excellency, Senator (Prof.) Ben. Ayade, Government of Cross River State has approved a replacement of the present system of refuse evacuation in the State with a house to house refuse collection system by respective refuse collection trucks.

Accordingly, all refuse bins currently displayed on major roads within Calabar Municipality, Calabar South and its environs are to be removed. Every compound/houses are to be provided with refuse bins, while refuse truck will now carryout house to house refuse evacuation at regular intervals.

It is the intention of the State Government through this new system, for landlords/residents to become active participants in refuse evacuation with the overall objective to sustain the fight to keep our environment clean, remove waste bins from major roads and check its attendant traffic and health risk to citizens. Details of the relevant levy/schedule of payment by landlords/residents are being worked out and will be announced later.

Residents are therefore advised to watch out for waste disposal contractors who will be moving from house to house to distribute waste disposal bins and to cooperate with them to ensure the success of the new approach to refuse disposal.

Ben Ayade, the Governor of Cross River, on Monday assumed duty at Government House, Calabar, promising to create 1,000 jobs in his first 100 days in office.

Speaking with journalists in Calabar, the new governor also assured that the issue of waste management and disposal as well as regeneration of forests would be among the priorities of his administration.

He also warned that civil servants who failed to be at their duty posts by 8.10 a.m. daily would be sanctioned.

“Our target is to create 500 to 1,000 jobs in the first 100 days. We will sanction errant civil servants who fail to be in their offices by 8.10 a.m.

“Issue of waste management and disposal, quick win industries, regeneration of forests, agriculture with a focus on rice, installation of processing plants will also be addressed.

“Similarly, Bakassi issue is one of the issues I will address in my first 100 days in office with a practical solution.

“We have also resolved to construct a dual carriage access road from Calabar to Ikom, Ogoja and Obudu to move products from northern and southern parts of Nigeria to Calabar Port,’’ Mr. Ayade said.

According to the governor, Calabar is in a position to be a sea port hub that can serve up to Niger Republic to create a huge economy that will have a ripple effect “to give jobs to our people’’.

“Personally, I provided Ayade Motors Transport Service as a subsidised means of transport to the people of Cross River.

“It is a responsibility of government to create jobs. I do not intend to drop, sack or reduce appointments in Cross River. But I am a change agent here to purify the system.

“It is my duty to block all leakages. I will not reduce political appointees, but will re-frame their mindset about their job schedule,’’ Mr. Ayade said. (NAN)

Gov Udom Apologizes to Uyo Residents over Flood, Swings into Action to Fix Drainage in IBB Way and others.

Meanwhile, the menace of flooding during the rainy season has led to loss of property and lives in many places across the world and in Africa. The recent case in Ghana that led to the loss of lives and in some communities in Delta state has indicated that there is need for proper flood control.

Flooding has also been linked to poor drainage system and poorly constructed roads.

The Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, has apologized to residents of the state for the cases of flooding experienced during the rainy season, especially in the state capital (Uyo).

He also made it known that concerted efforts have been made and contracts awarded to some construction firms all aimed at controlling the flood situation in the state and assuaging the damage in affected areas.

Speaking at a Sunday service in Insight Bible Church, Uyo, the governor announced that Julius Berger have been awarded a contract to fix the drainage system along IBB way and 2 lanes, in Uyo. He also announced a few other projects that will be embarked upon from this July.

On damage control, OrangeNEWS gathered that the governor had awarded construction contracts to Niger Pet to fix the gully erosion site at Anua.

It should be noted that the affected areas were the responsibility of the previous governments but the governor apologized for their current state and has taken measures to get them fixed.

Akwa Ibom State Consultative Forum has urged the state Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, to eradicate cultism from the school system and governance.

In a meeting presided over by the former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, in Uyo, on Sunday, the group appealed to Emmanuel to encourage local contractors to thrive but not to do away with foreign contractors.

The group stated that by encouraging local contractors, there would be internal circulation of democratic dividends in the state.

“Much as the governor has the overall power in the appointment of members of his cabinet, there is the need to consult the elders of the local government areas concerned.

“The local government areas should be made to submit recommendations to be considered for Exco members and other political appointments.

“Local contractors should be encouraged but not necessarily dispensing totally with foreign contractors to enhance internal circulation of democratic dividends,” he said.

The group also advised the state government to set up a Border Area Commission in order to take care of special development challenges in such places.

The elders advised the governor to ensure that free education policy continues, adding that teachers at the level should be motivated and supervised.

They said, “The forum also advised that technical education should be improved upon in the state, and Government Technical College, Ikot Ada Idem, should be revived while similar institutions in the state should be upgraded to meet the expectations of the present time.

“The forum advised that practical agriculture should be re-introduced in the schools for self-sufficiency in food production.”
