COMPUTING STUDENTS LAMENT OVER HIGH COST OF CELLULAR DATA SUBSCRIPTION AND BAD NETWORK FOR VIRTUAL CLASSES.

• Kabir Benjamin | February 2nd, 2021

Students of the School of Computing, FUTA who aired their opinion in The Computing Parrot's weekly opinion-base program which held last week Friday and Saturday complained bitterly about the high data consumption rate of online class softwares and the poor network they encounter.

Virtual classes which should effectively replace the physical ones due to the COVID-19 pandemic has received its first set of punches even at its early period of implementation.

Ogunsuyi Oluwaseyi Nelson, a 200 level student of Computer Science department in his opinion, thinks physical classes would be preferable except the school provides free internet for the students.

He said, " I think physical classes will be better. Virtual classes will also be great as it greatly minimizes the risk of spreading Covid-19, but that would only be an option if the school provide [free] access to internet (data: probably free Wi-Fi or students login) for students because the cost of the voluminous data consumed by the meeting apps e.g zoom would be too burdensome on the students. Better still the school can come up with ideas like creating a customized app for virtual classes which can be freely accessed when using the school Wi-Fi like the e-learning portal and school website which can be accessed directly without login or vouchers. But in the unavailability of the enumerated, I'll prefer we carry on with the physical classes howbeit in compliance with covid-19 protocols. "

Another student, Alabi Damilola, a 200 level Student of Information Systems department said, "As good as it may be to have an online class, the cost of data should be a factor to be considered. "

An 100 level student of Information Technology who simply identifies as Adebayo recommended physical classes with strict COVID-19 compliance.

To Chelsea, a 200 level student of Information Technology, the problem is not only high data consumption but poor network too.

"I've asked around and there was someone who told me that during the class, her network was fluctuating and each time her network disc***ects her from the class, she would have to wait for the lecturer to add her back.
Do you know how much she have missed?
If the online lectures can be handled well then fine. No problem but if not, I'll rather go physical, " Chelsea added.
