Nigeria Prioritizes Road Safety For Citizen’s Well-Being

The Nigerian government considers road safety a major development and economic priority for government at all levels, as it ensures the safety and protection of lives, and the well-being of the citizenry.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo expressed this view on Thursday evening when he received on a courtesy call at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr. Jean Todt, who was accompanied by the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi.

“In terms of priority, road safety is critical to us. Just looking at the number of fatalities, more attention should be given to road safety issues because, certainly we will have far less fatalities…. we should try and keep the campaign going and adopt different approaches to these issues, so that we don’t have the kinds of huge fatalities,” the VP said.

Noting that road safety and welfare of citizens were crucial issues to government, the Vice President stated that this was a reason “why it is that we have done and continue to do as much as possible to promote the work of our federal road safety corps.”

According to Prof. Osinbajo, public education campaign such as that provided by the FRSC traffic radio “is not just important, in terms of the fact that it is helpful in informing people about traffic and all that, but it is also a major means of educating the public about road safety issue.

“Public education is very important to ensuring road safety, because people need to be informed, especially about the simple easy-to-do things such as wearing seat belts, not using the phone while driving, not driving under the influence, and very simple, straight forward preventive measures that is central to people’s lives and their limbs are safe.”

While emphasizing why the Federal Government is promoting road safety issues, mentioning the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy II (NRSS II), the Vice President also noted that the Federal Government will continue to do more to ensure the safety of lives and property, explaining the economic benefits of road safety.

The vice president commended the UN Special Envoy, who visited Nigeria some few years ago, for “continuing the good work of road safety across the world.” He also praised the FRSC Corps Marshal for his very extensive work in road safety matters in Nigeria.

“The President in particular has ensured that road safety is a development priority…. We look forward to more collaboration with the UN, and you can be sure of our commitment,” the VP told the UN Envoy.

In his remarks, the UN Special Envoy emphasized on the importance of road safety, especially in a populous country such as Nigeria, as well as raising more awareness on the need to prevent roads accidents in Nigeria and Africa.

“I commend the work being done by the FRSC and the strong commitment of the Nigerian government towards improving road safety in the country. “Road safety is an important issue and it comes at a huge cost,” said Mr. Todt.

Also speaking, Corps Marshal Boboye disclosed that Nigeria (alongside four other African countries; Ghana, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa), received the first-ever Kofi Annan Road Safety Award on Wednesday at a ceremony in Accra, Ghana.

At the Accra ceremony, which was attended by the UN Special Envoy, Nigeria was given the award for its efforts in curbing road accidents, among others.

Boboye also thanked the Vice President for his personal contribution to the issues, noting the improvements recorded in Nigeria in the area of road safety. He also acknowledged that the FRSC has been getting support from the United Nation Secretary General Special Envoy in the areas of capacity development and the implementation of the conventions.

He said, “Your Excellency, you respectfully received Mr. Todt in 2018 and had a series of discussions with him, which immediately you activated. I want to say proudly today that most of the issues raised then have been fully implemented. The key issue you raised after the meeting was the ascension of Nigeria to the UN global conventions for road safety, which you directed, and this was done.

“We are going to go back to the drawing board and see how we can implement the enforcement of the use of safety helmets in the country.”

At the end of the meeting, the visiting UN Envoy presented the Vice President with a prototype design of a safety helmet.

Oyo North Senatorial Seat: Physically Challenged Candidate Declares Ambition

Worried by what he described as the neglect and plight of the physically challenged by political leaders, a physically challenged man, Bamikunle Tunde, has declared his ambition to contest the Oyo North Senatorial Seat on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Bamikunle, the founder of Baba 70 Foundation, a non-governmental farm project focused on creating a platform of mediation between farmers and herdsmen, as well as fighting the cause of people living with a disability within Oke-Ogun and its environs in Oyo State, declared his political ambition to the public in the place he considers his territory; the School for People with Special Needs, in Iseyin.

Speaking during the declaration, Bamikunle said the visit to the school was part of consultations with stakeholders to galvanise support for his aspiration to clinch the ticket of the PDP to be the party’s flag bearer in the 2023 elections as the member representing Oyo North at the National Assembly.

He said: “We have tried rich and able-bodied people to represent us at the State Assembly, Federal House of Representatives, and the Senate but they have largely disappointed us. It is time to make a paradigm shift; let us send a physically challenged person who is not a “money bag,” but a commoner, to represent us and see the difference. I promise to stand for the people, air their views, and always stand accountable to the people. I promise to serve you with the fear of God.”

Bamikunle disclosed that his aspiration to go to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not to gain wealth but to seek ways to improve the living condition of the masses through the instrumentality of the law. He disclosed that he had committed his meager resources to selfless services in the past and believed he would do more for the masses if allowed to serve on a giant pedestal.

He stated: “The peasant farmers, poor artisans, okada riders, students, civil servants, and the physically challenged persons are my primary constituents. I am one of you; I know your desires, aspirations, and challenges. Therefore, I will be a better representative because I understand your realities.”

Bamikunle, however, called on well-meaning individuals who desire to help the cause of the masses to join the train and support his ambition to create a platform to help his people by helping to make his mandate a reality, adding that, “while I know this is capital intensive, I believe that people who have a sincere love for the masses will join this train of emancipating the poor and downtrodden.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Iseyin South Local Council Development Area, Hon. Raheem Ajibola stated that Bamikunle had always been a pillar of support for the community of people living with disability and had always been committed to developing the people and the town, giving out of his meager resources to help the people.

Ajibola noted: “We are not in doubt that he is worthy to represent us because we all know what he stands for. He was encouraged to move his ambition because he knows the government in power in Oyo State is committed to the welfare of people living with a disability. It will allow them to explore their potentials.”

He disclosed that Bamikunle had donated solar lights, food items, and writing materials to the school at the declaration. As part of his love for the people had always ensured; he helped the cause of people living with a disability.

Awoniyi Eyes First Goal Against Bayern

Union Berlin striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, will be hoping to score his first goal against leaders Bayern Munich when both sides clash at the Allianz Arena on Saturday in a German Bundesliga match-up.

The capital side will be hoping to take advantage of Bayern’s faltering form in the league in their last two games when they clash on Saturday.

The Bavarians have struggled recently, and were held 1-1 by Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim in their last two outings.

It’s Awoniyi’s third game against the German giants in the Bundesliga and he’s yet to see his side win, having drawn 1-1 in April 2021 at the Allianz Arena then losing 5-2 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in October.

Union are currently eighth on the log and a win will further help them in achieving their dreams of playing in Europe next season. The club will also be banking on Awoniyi, who has scored twice in their last three league games.

Awoniyi’s countryman Anthony Utah will be hoping to make his third league appearance against the Bavarians after returning from a knee injury.

He will also be hoping to get his name on the score sheet for the first time since June 27, 2020.

Leprosy Mission Grants Partners N152m For Children With Disabilities’ Needs

The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, donated N152m to 17 partner organisations in order to ensure the inclusion and support welfare of children living with disabilities in Nigeria.

The donation was made on Thursday, in Abuja for the purpose of supporting 2,212 children living with disabilities as well as 940 parents and caregivers.

TLMN implemented the programme under a five-year strategic plan as a ‘Strategic Partner Organization of the Liliane Foundation’.

The National Director, TLMN, Dr. Sunday Udo, said that the organisation was implementing the programme to ensure that children with disabilities get all the necessary support needed to function like their counterparts.

“We were appointed by the Liliane Foundation to anchor their project in Nigeria as a key partner. We just issued out N152m roughly for this programme to 17 organisations working in 15 states to meet and provide services to those children we talked about.

“Every year, we issue a call that is centered on a framework designed for five years to look at children and youngsters, from 0-25 that have disabilities in Nigeria.

“We issued the call and informed prospective grantees to apply on the basis of the criteria we set, and to meet up with the requirements.

“We go through a process of administrative and general checks to identify and come down to the number that we have today.

“When we made the call, we had over 300 applications, but today we are giving grants to only 17. We are hoping that this grant will span 15 states.

“For this year, we covered inclusive education first. We are also covering living support for parents of those with disabilities. We are also covering inclusive labour, sexual rights and reproductive health,” Udo said.

He, however, urged the partner organisations to spend the funds judiciously and at the targeted population for the expected impact.
He added, “And hopefully, as they go out to implement, we want to make sure that they come out with results. We want results. We have already planned that between now and before the end of the year, for a specific time to go and visit them and see how far they have gone. This is to ensure that the money is actually getting value for what it was meant for.”

Director, Special Needs, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Mrs. Nkechi Onwukwe, thanked the Foundation for the donation.

She said, “We thank the Liliane Foundation for the funds and the Leprosy Mission Nigeria for being a worthy partner that is eager to see that persons with disabilities live better lives.

“The ministry has been partnering with the leprosy Mission and we count so much on what they are doing.

“Those in position to assess are aware that they do not make noise, but are doing a great deal to ensure support for persons living with disabilities.”

2023: Reps Caucus Endorses Tinubu As APC Presidential Candidate

Members of the All Progressives Congress Caucus in the House of Representatives have endorsed Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the ruling party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.

The endorsement was pronounced during a meeting at the National Assembly complex, held at the instance of the APC National Leader, Senator Tinubu, who was accompanied by the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase; Majority Leader. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, and other Principal Officers, as well as Senator Iyiola Omisore.

Speaker Gbajabiamila in an address described Tinubu as the only candidate for the Presidency and challenged those intending to vie for the Presidency to desist from giving flimsy excuses to declare their intention.
Mr. Gbajabiamila maintained that it does not speak well of a party that boasts as the largest political party in the continent, not to see anyone that could rival Tinubu barely seven weeks to the APC party primary.

“We have looked Left, right, front back, in search of how many people are running for presidency of Nigeria 2023. And I was saying to some or my colleagues just a couple of days ago, it doesn’t speak well or our great party that boasts 200 and something million people when we boast or being the largest country in Africa.

We boast of saying many things by Nigeria and by six, seven weeks before the primaries for the Presidency of this great country that we have only seen one person running up and down the country, traveling the length and breadth of Nigeria giving respect to all those to who respect is due, selling his wealth, marketing his true trade, delivering his message.

I personally think it’s wrong that for a country such as ours, we are only hearing names and nobody else is campaigning. I don’t think Nigeria is a country that can be taken for granted. I don’t think Nigeria is a country where people should wait six weeks before elections and we don’t know they are contesting except for one man; that is unfair to every citizen of Nigeria.” Gbajabiamila stressed.

Qualified Nigerian

Addressing the lawmakers, the former Lagos State Governor, averred that he is the most competent and qualified Nigerian for the exalted position of the President in the 2023 general elections.

Senator Tinubu who argued that other contenders have nothing to offer, said.

“Most people have nothing to offer but questions and creating doubt. I am not here to be defensive.

I am here to tell you that I am one of the best products that you can sell. I am the only one in the race that is most competent, most qualified to be your President come year 2023. I am the only one who has been through the tutelage of the National Assembly.

I am the only one who has consistently been in one party. The others are not stable. Some of them are rolling stones. I have been through the National Assembly. I have been in the corporate world with a background in the public sector, academic, finance and development. I have inherited one of the first badly managed states in the states of this country.

What I want to request you to do is to support me. I have discussed that aspect, my lifelong ambition with Mr. President, that after the end of his term I want to step in his shoes and not step on his toes.”

While responding to a question on the lingering crisis in APC, Tinubu said “We are not in crisis. We solve our problems. Anybody who understands democracy should understand the facts about conflict and conflict resolution. That is the mechanism to solve problems in democracy. Another thing is voting. If you disagree.”

The Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa in a remark urged the APC Caucus to rally support for Senator Tinubu and argued that this is the time for APC lawmakers to reciprocate the kind gesture of Senator Tinubu for the support given to the party over the years.

“And for the support you have given to the democratic system in this country, we are immeasurably grateful and there is no other chance whatsoever to support you to achieve his life ambition.

Doguwa added that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the party, which was the reason Senator Tinubu has decided that the National Assembly should be one of the early points of call for him to solicit for suppor

Nigeria Among Countries In Dire Need Of External Food Assistance- FAO

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has listed Nigeria as one of the 33 African countries in crisis, which are in dire need of external food assistance.

The apex global food organisation projected conditions to worsen significantly in the West African region where Nigeria is located, due to conflicts, high food prices and reduced harvests.

According to a report, Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS), released by FAO, the 33 hotspot countries in crisis, which require external assistance for food, lack the resources to deal with reported critical problems of food insecurity.

The report noted that while the situation was alarming in East Africa, humanitarian needs were projected to also increase in Southern Africa in late 2022 due to the impact of adverse weather.

Also, the new report disclosed that adverse weather conditions in North Africa and Southern Africa have curtailed 2022 cereal production prospects, noting that shortfalls in cereal production were registered in many countries in East Africa and West Africa, where the 2021 crops were recently harvested, due to poor rains and conflicts.

Specifically, the report noted that the conflict in northern Nigeria and localised shortfalls in cereal production were major contributors to the food crisis in Nigeria.

“According to the latest CH analysis, about 12.9 million people were estimated to need humanitarian food assistance between October and December 2021 owing to the conflict in northern states, localised shortfalls in staple food production, high food prices and reduced incomes.”

As of October 2021, over 3.2 million people were estimated to be internally displaced in northern states.

“Between June and August 2022, the number of food insecure is projected to increase to 18 million people, of which 620,000, are projected to face CH Phase 4 (Emergency) and 13 550 CH Phase 5 (Catastrophe),” the report stated.

Tunisian Opposition Holds Protest Against President Saied

Thousands of Tunisian opposition supporters demonstrated in the capital against President Kais Saied’s power grab and the economic crisis in the North African country.

“Poverty has increased”, and “Famine is at our doorsteps”, they chanted as at least 2,000 people gathered in the city centre.

Protesters held up signs in English and French, reading “Tunisia wake up” and “Tunisian state is on the verge of collapse”.

Saied last July sacked the government, suspended parliament and moved to rule by decree, sparking fears for democracy in the birthplace of the 2011 Arab uprisings.

The latest demonstration was called by the Free Destourian Party which is led by staunchly anti-Islamist lawyer Abir Moussi.

“The government today is incapable of finding solutions for the Tunisian people… If we continue in silence, we will lose the country,” Moussi said in a speech during the demonstration.

She branded Tunisia’s current executive as “illegitimate” and called for legislative elections to be brought forward from their scheduled date of December.

Bearing a portrait of Moussi, protester Youssef Jabali said, “Saied, the dictator, is shut off in his palace and the people can’t find semolina, flour, oil or sugar.”

Already plunged in economic crisis, Tunisia has in recent weeks seen a shortage of staple foods, as the war in Ukraine threatens to interrupt key supplies to various Arab countries.

The authorities have attributed the shortages to panic buying ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, starting this year in April, when Muslims traditionally break a dawn-to-dusk fast with lavish family meals.

Saied on Wednesday declared a “relentless war” on food speculators and profiteers, accusing them of seeking to “strike at social peace and security”.

UI Alumni Association To Establish Cancer Center At Teaching Hospital

The University of Ibadan Alumni Association, UIAA (Worldwide), is set to establish a Cancer Diagnostic Centre at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and has called on stakeholders in the health sector to support its N2 billion appeal fund for the project.

The President of the association, Prof. Elsie Adewoye, made the call, at the weekend, during a news conference, held at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Adewoye disclosed that the initiative was borne out of the need to draw public attention to the growing incidence of cancer, create the necessary public awareness on the preventive measures of cancer and further inform Nigerians and the world of the association’s plans to key into global efforts to stem the devastating impact of cancer in the society.

She explained that cancer, not peculiar to Nigeria, is a world-wide disease with global implications which requires a synergy of interventions on a global scale, acknowledging that although there are other diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hypertension or sickle cell anemia, which have been of major concern to medical researchers all over the world, the association has chosen to intervene in cancer because cancer has emerged as a leading cause of deaths annually, globally.

“We call on all public spirited persons in Nigeria and beyond, organisations, institutions, agencies, commissions, churches, etc. to rise to the solidarity with the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (Worldwide) in its onerous but worthy quest to raise N2 billion for a Cancer Diagnostic Center at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan,” Adewoye appealed.

She disclosed that the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015 shows that deaths related to cancer rose by 17% between 2005 and 2015 and projects that by 2030, new diagnosed cases would have risen by 68% to 23.7m, saying it is further estimated that cancer caused 8.8 million deaths (one in every six deaths) globally in 2015 and cost the world the best part of US$1.16 trillion, in 2010.

Adewoye noted that the burden of cancer in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is large and growing, recalling that in 2020, according to Prof. Isaac Adewole, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and former Minister of Health in Nigeria, cancer was responsible for 79,000 deaths in Nigeria, with new cases estimated at 125,000 annually.

She stated: “Other notable and critical issues that have been adduced for the growing rise of the illness in the country are the cost implications of treatment, fear to speak out by victims, lack of access to medical facilities, near absence of oncological and diagnostic centres in the country, lack of the study of oncology in our universities and absence of a clear cut scientific explanation for the cause of cancer.”

While responding, Prof. Adeniyi Adenipekun, who represented the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Prof. Jason Otegbayo, stated that the UCH is in full support of the cancer diagnostic center, which he referred to as a timely intervention that would encourage people to access early diagnosis and bring about an increase in the cure rate of cancer.

Adenipekun said: “It tells you the burden of cancer in Nigeria, 70% to 80% of our cases come in late stages where treatment and cure is almost impossible because diagnostic aspect is not robust enough. So, if a programme like this is going to provide a diagnostic centre where people can quickly access diagnosis, then early detection will now be a common occurrence unlike what we have right now.”

The association further affirmed that it would purchase equipment needed for the cancer diagnostic center within 6 months if support and funds come in as expected.

Russia, Ukraine To Hold Online Negotiations On Monday

Russian and Ukrainian delegations will resume talks on Monday via video link, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to an adviser to Ukrainian President, Mykhailo Podoliak, and part of the negotiating team, “Negotiations go non-stop in the format of video conferences. Working groups are constantly functioning.

“A negotiating session will be held to sum up the preliminary results.”

Ukrainian and Russian delegations have held three rounds of peace talks in-person in Belarus since Feb. 28, though the negotiations ended without a significant breakthrough.

WTI Crude Records 5.7% Drop Within Week

Crude oil futures ended Friday’s session 3.1% percent higher at slightly above $109 per barrel, but posted a 5.7% decline on the week, the biggest weekly drop since November, as investors weighed efforts to bring more supply to the market against fears of an imminent Russia embargo.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has pushed the US and many Western oil companies to cease purchasing Russian oil and there were some talks about potential supply boost from Venezuela, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The US benchmark touched a 14-year high of $130.5 earlier this week as worries grew over further supply shortages in anticipation of the ban on imports of Russian oil.

The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) benchmark for US crude is the world’s most actively traded commodity.

Ghanaian Medical Students In Ukraine To Continue Studies In Grenada

Ghanaians studying Medicine in Ukraine whose education has been disrupted due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine can now continue their studies in Grenada.

The Ghana government signed an agreement with the Caribbean island state to secure spaces for 200 Ghanaian medical students who had to flee Ukraine to continue and complete their education at the St George’s University of Medicine, Grenada.

The Registrar of the Scholarships Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang, and the Director of Recruitment and Commercial Engagement of the university, David Anthonisz, signed the agreement in the United Kingdom (UK).

The country is engaging other countries it has educational exchange agreements with to strike similar agreements; Mr Agyemang told newsmen.

The move, he said, would ensure that the 200 medical students continued with their education seamlessly so that they would return to the country after their programme to supplement the number of medical doctors in Ghana.

The Registrar said within the month, officials of St George’s University would interact with the affected medical students on an individual basis towards offering them admission.

The agreement follows an earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ghana and the university, signed in 2019.

Under the MoU, selected students who have first degrees in medical sciences would be offered scholarships for postgraduate training in the medical field.

Mr Agyemang noted that the secretariat brokered the additional arrangement because the Ghana Medical School could not have placement for such continuing students.

The Scholarships Secretariat Registrar added that not all the students had arrived from Ukraine but the government was being proactive.

Asked about the remaining 800 students who were not studying Medicine, Mr Agyemang said the government was liaising with other educational institutions both home and abroad to ensure that they continued with their studies.

For his part, Mr Anthonisz said St George University of Medicine was excited and ready to absorb the medical students.

Mr Anthonisz commended the country for having a reputation for providing great students at the international level, saying that was one of the reasons for the partnership.

Last week, there were reports that university in Hungary was preparing to absorb Ghanaian students.

Some Ghanaian students who fled Ukraine had ended up in Hungary.
