Scientists have discovered that the debris left over from a star that was torn apart by a supermassive black hole is now impacting another star or smaller black hole orbiting the giant one.

In 2019, ground-based observatories found a black hole shredding a star in an event called AT2019qiz. In late 2023, our Chandra X-ray Observatory detected an X-ray flare from this object. Intensive monitoring with our NICER telescope revealed that such eruptions are occurring about every 48 hours, which was then confirmed by our Swift observatory and India's AstroSat telescope. Then, thanks to data from Chandra and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers found that the disk of debris from that original star had expanded enough that if an object was orbiting the black hole on timescales of a week or less, it would now be colliding with the disk, causing the eruptions.

The food people eat affects the health of their future generations:

Historically, genes were thought to be immune to environmental factors, but the discovery of epigenetics in 1942 changed this view.

Epigenetics refers to shifts in gene expression caused by environmental influences, including diet, without altering the underlying DNA sequence. This means that lifestyle factors, such as nutrition, can affect how genes are expressed and passed down through generations.

One notable example is the Dutch Hunger Winter during World War II, when a severe famine led to epigenetic changes in the offspring of malnourished pregnant women. These changes, affecting a gene related to growth and development, resulted in increased risks of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes in both the children and grandchildren of those women.

The field of nutritional epigenetics, which studies how diet impacts gene expression, has shown that dietary choices have lasting effects on health beyond a single generation. Early research focused primarily on the mother's diet during pregnancy, as gestation is a critical developmental period.

However, recent studies have expanded to include paternal influences, revealing that a father’s diet can also affect the health of future offspring. For instance, animal studies have shown that male rats exposed to certain toxins or fed diets supplemented with specific nutrients like methionine had offspring with altered growth and reproductive traits. This suggests that both parents' dietary habits can leave an epigenetic mark on their children and grandchildren.
