The world is a scary place right now, especially in Nigeria.

Today's exchange rate for a dollar is over N624.

The cost of gas has skyrocketed.

Not to mention how outrageously expensive grocery shopping is and the insane housing market.

I still clearly recall being able to purchase a delicious loaf of bread for only N150 back then.

Now, I can only buy bread for nothing less than N1,000.

I also recall my time in university, when I used to pay N990 for a carton of Indomie noodles.

How much is a carton of noodles worth today?

Did I mention how expensive an egg crate is right now?

or the price of sardines and fresh fish?

Sometimes I just wonder...

What are people supposed to do, especially those who can't afford this kind of living?

Why does it seem like it's only getting harder to get by?

And how are you going to keep up with this crazy economy?

Successful businesses are building a brand around their Unique Selling Proposition and answer the question:

“Why should I choose you?”

Let's take a look at the three different types of unique selling propositions:

- People
- Process
- Product

These three are afterall, what your business is made of. When you think of what your unique mechanism can be, think of your people, your process, and your product.

Let me elaborate on them...

PEOPLE

1. Who specifically you serve that no one else can.
2. How your team is uniquely qualified above your competition.
3. How you understand your customer better than your competitors.

PROCESS

1. How you serve differently and better.
2. What tools you leverage to deliver the desired end result.
3. What signature process you’ve created to get results.

PRODUCT

1. What unique features and benefits your products or services have.
2. How your products or services are better, faster, stronger than similar ones in the market.
3. How your products or services also meet unknown needs for your customers.

You should also address the following questions while deciding on a unique selling proposition for your business:

- How authentic does your value proposition feel?

- Does it make your company intensely appealing?

- Does it have a strong barrier to entry?

- Is it hard to find an exact substitute?

- Does it result in fewer competitors?

- Can you charge higher prices?

- Does it make your sales cycle shorter and less expensive?

- Have you created a new category?

Keep in mind that a truly unique selling proposition provides value to the customer and sets you apart from the competition, giving you an unfair advantage.

Last week, while studying and learning a few things about selling from one of Zig Ziglar's books on selling, I came across a very intriguing section that every businessperson should know, so make sure to read between the lines: 👇🏽

An ongoing debate, at every sales get-together (meaning when two salespeople start talking) is this:

“What is the most important part of the
selling process?”

A disproportionate number believe that “closing sales” more effectively would solve all their selling problems;

some say that the only way to sales success is to sell the proper product;

others say that handling objections is the key to success; one group claims that making a powerful presentation is the most important area;

and still another group believes determining the specific wants and needs of the prospect is most important to sales success.

The reality is, if you can’t handle all phases of the sales process, you will not sell enough to stay in the profession.

However, regardless of how good your closing skills, your product, your ability to handle objections, your presentation, or your skills at determining wants and needs, you are out of business if you don’t have a prospect!

The consensus among outstanding salespeople and sales trainers is almost unanimous: Prospecting is the most important key to sales success!

Without prospects you are disqualified as a sales professional—done before you even get started.

As a sales person... Sometimes, the greatest obstacle you have to overcome is unawareness of what your product can do for a customer.

In strategic selling, you are always competing against someone or something.

Whatever you are selling, there is an alternative available in your market.

What you have to find out is what your prospective customers are considering and then position yourself in such a way that your customers conclude that your offering is superior to anything else available.

In the words of Brian Tracy... "Selling in some respects is similar to warfare. Decisions in warfare are always made in consideration of what the enemy is doing or likely to do".

Many of your most crucial decisions in selling will be determined by what your competitors are doing, or what they are likely to do.
