Blasphemy: Deborah Yakubu crossed the line, says Abuja National Mosque Imam

The Imam of the National Mosque Abuja, Ibrahim Maqari, has reacted to the lynching of Deborah Yakubu, a Christian student in Sokoto State, over alleged blasphemy, saying that the deceased had crossed the line.

On Thursday, a group of students of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto murdered their female coursemate for insulting the Prophet of Islam via a voice note sent to a class Whatsapp group.

The school has since been shut down by the state government, while the police had arrested some of the suspects.

Reacting to the development via his verified Twitter handle, Mr Maqari stressed that the Muslims have some red lines which must not be crossed.

He said: “It should be known to everyone that we the Muslims have some red lines beyond which MUST NOT be crossed.

“The dignity of the Prophet, PBUH, is at the forefront of the red lines. If our grievances are not properly addressed, then we should not be criticized for addressing them ourselves,” he posted.

Blasphemy: Bring killers of Deborah Yakubu to book, CAN tells Govt

May 13, 2022

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned as gruesome the killing of Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, North-West Nigeria.

The incident, which occurred on May 13, led to the setting ablaze the co**se of the deceased beyond recognition by a mob.

Mob kills student over alleged blasphemy in Sokoto

The apex Christian body, therefore, called on the Federal Government to investigate the murder and “swiftly bring perpetrators to justice”.

In a statement on Friday entitled ‘Deborah’s Killers Must Be Brought To Book’ in Abuja, by CAN’s General Secretary, Joseph Bade Daramola, described killing for any God as ungodly, satanic, foolish, reprehensible and totally unacceptable.

He warned the government and the security agencies against treating perpetrators of such dastardly act with kid gloves.

Daramola said, “The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) condemns in strong terms the gruesome murder of a Christian, 200 Level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Deborah Samuel by some extremist fellow students on alleged blasphemy.

“The unlawful and dastardly action of the perpetrators must not only be condemned by all right thinking people but the security operatives must fish them out, prosecute them as it is expected of them.

“It is the failure of the security agencies and the government to rise up to such criminalities in the past that gave birth to terrorists and bandits. And as long as the State fails to bring these beasts and criminals amidst us to book, so also the society will continue to be their killing fields.

“We acknowledge the swift reaction of His Eminence, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III who not o

N100m forms: APC stealing government funds for elections, says PDP

May 11, 2022

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress administration of allowing the mass looting of public funds to corruptly create a war chest to intimidate Nigerians for the purpose of winning the 2023 general elections by all means.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, said this in a statement in Abuja. He alleged that the APC was diverting public funds meant for development purposes and salaries of workers to its coffers by orchestrating the purchase of its Presidential nomination form by all manner of persons at excessive N100 million to warehouse sleaze funds for the elections

He said, “Our Party has information of how public funds are being withdrawn from Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals of government and diverted to people who have no verifiable means of livelihood to purchase APC’s Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms for individuals without any electoral value and who cannot even win Local Government elections.

ASUU strike: Don’t disrupt political activities, Lawan appeals to students

Tope Omogbolagun

11 May 2022

Kindly share this story:

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday, appealed to students through the National Association of Nigerian Students not to disrupt political activities.

Lawan made this appeal to the NANS President, Sunday Ashefon, alongside other officials of the union who were led to his office by a Methodist Bishop, Dr. Sunday Onuoha.

Students had begun to stage protests in different parts of the country threatening to stall all political activities until the Federal Government came to a resolution with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The Senate President while responding to the threat by the students to disrupt political activities, appealed to them to continue on the path of consultation and avoid confrontation.

He said, “I want to advise, I don’t think it will be necessary to disrupt political activities. We shouldn’t do that and we don’t need to do that.

“What we need to do is to continue to follow the path of consultation, consolidation and avoid confrontation. It is when you emphasise consultation, that it’s much easier for us to find something that you can consolidate.”

Lawan also said that the senate was going to work towards ending the strike as soon as possible.

The Red Sea Oil Tanker Conundrum

BY KEEGAN CARVALHOAFRICA MIDDLE EASTMAR 24TH 20224 MINS

The oil tanker which was abandoned five years ago in the Red Sea has gained the attention of millions on account of its deterioration, likelihood of an oil spill, and its consequences on marine life and human beings.

In 2015, the FSO Safer, was abandoned in the Red Sea, 4.8 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen’s western port of Hodeida. This rusting oil tanker has been a growing concern for neighbouring countries due to the probability of an explosion and a consequential oil spill in the enclosed region of the Red Sea. In addition, an oil spill from this could be four times bigger than that of the Exxon Valdez, which had been severely damaging to the marine ecosystem and would likely further aggravate the communal tensions that exist in war-torn Yemen and neighbouring regions.

The Red Sea is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots and is also susceptible to surrounding changes, given the highly biodiverse ecosystem of endemic species and sensitive habitats such as mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs.

Marine oil spills are a unique category of disasters in that they are generally unpredictable. In 1989, Exxon Valdez which ran aground on the Alaskan reefs, spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William Sound at the Gulf of Alaska. Decades later, the most notable Deepwater Horizon disaster shocked the world when a drilling explosion released one hundred and thirty-four million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Improved regulations over the years have curbed the frequency of oil spills of large to medium vessels to about six per year. However, dilapidated, ignored, and uninsured vessels pose a different kind of problem which require not only technical solutions, but financial, and political ones. Furthermore, given the ongoing co
