Nigeria Is Technically Bankrupt, Governor Obaseki Declares

“Nigeria is technically bankrupt. And I mean it. When you are bankrupt anywhere in the world, like in the United States, you file for what they call Chapter Eleven. You restructure your affairs so that you can reorganise and meet your obligations. Nigeria is not restructuring in that sense; it still behaves as if it had money like it used to.

“It (Nigeria) has been in trouble for a while. I won’t say insolvent, but technically so, in the sense that we don’t have enough to cover our expenditure, we are not reducing our expenditure, and we are not earning more.” -Governor Godwin Obaseki, Edo(Credit: Punch Newspapers)

South Africa denies Nigeria’s U18 basketball team visa for 2024 FIBA

The South African Consulate in Abuja has denied players of the Nigerian U-18 boys’ basketball team visas to participate in the 2024 FIBA U18 Afrobasket tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Cape Town from December 14 to 22.

Confirming the development to newsmen, the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) frowned at the sudden denial of visas, which they claimed was done without explanation.

The Vice Chairman of the Youth Development Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Ugo Udezue, described South Africa’s actions as total sabotage.

“First of all, it’s rather unfortunate that an African country needs a visa to travel to another African country. Secondly, this is against the spirit of sportsmanship. These kids have sacrificed too much for a visa consular officer to deny them the opportunity to represent Nigeria globally.

The act of refusing the team visas seems like a deliberate attempt to stop the Junior D’Tigers, as the South African Embassy in Lagos cleared the girls to travel, and they are already in Pretoria and set for their opening match against Egypt on Tuesday,” Udezue said.

THE ONE-JUKUN PROPOSAL

By Jibo Zhema

INTRODUCTION
I've come across some badly written narratives of the term "Jukun", and how it had laid the foundation for misconceptions about the people and their supposed rich history. When history is misconstrued, division is inevitable. These were some of the points that necessitated this proposal.

PAST
It is no longer news that the Jukun people were a great nation and a force to reckon with. The history of Nigeria should have been incomplete without mentioning their influences, but nothing of such is found or taught in our schools thereby further ensuring that their descendants begin to casually forget their great past and the roles their ancestors played in shaping most of the cultures that now appear alien to them.

The Hausa history acknowledged the greatness and dominating influence of the Jukun people. The Benin and Kanem Bornu Empires all acknowledged the greatness of the Jukun people of the defunct Kwararafa Kingdom. Today, there is no single museum anywhere in the world that is dedicated solely to the history of the Jukun people. There are online stores selling very expensive Jukun Statues and making huge money from our rich history because we've abandoned our arts and crafts in the hands of strangers. Just Google it and see statues that no Jukun man can even recognise - being sold in our name.

If the greatness of our past was forged in brotherhood, how then can we reignite its flames?

PRESENT
I've heard different Jukun groups defining "Benue" according to their dialect/intonations. Some said it means "Follow the river"; another claims it means "Come and see". Which should we believe?

Many sub-tribes under the Jukun canopy have never felt like part of the family because nobody makes an effort to involve them in anything Jukun but we like to mention them when bragging about our reach and wide coverage. These tribes are gradually losing belief in the history which linked them to the great Jukun people and are now being attracted to and courted by other cultures due to religious influences and the abandonment by their supposed ancestral family. Their descendants have started claiming other tribes and ancestry because they've never seen their parents partake in anything that had to do with the Jukun culture and tradition.

Our generation is supervising the gradual erosion of Jukun as a race of great people and replacing it with sentiment, hate, and lack of interest in passing down what was passed down to us. Even our children don't use their Jukun names anymore and we don't see anything wrong with that. They can't speak the language to save themselves, but we are cool with it.

FUTURE
The future belongs to those with goals and plans to conquer it. I see how the Wanu people are quietly laying down markers and intentionally building themselves for the benefit of their sub-tribe. Their unity of purpose is something to learn from. From Nigeria to Chad and Niger Republic, they are constantly chasing an agenda to promote/protect their culture and identity because they've been neglected, subdued or treated with hostility by those who benefit more from their resilience and economic activities.

Secret wars are being fought within and between many sub-tribes in the Jukun Kingdom but we can pretend that there isn't. Many have publicly renounced their membership of the family due to ill-treatment, neglect, or constant domination and bullying by another family member.

Certain leaders who should lead the campaign for reconciliation and unity are either slaves to the politics of stomach infrastructure or championing a personal divisive agenda to benefit from the chaos they create. These idiotic attitudes have left the diasporans in a quagmire of confusion. They don't know who to identify with.

I've listened to many narratives in which people from Benue, Kogi, Kano, Gombe, Plateau, and even Kebbi - proudly claim to be of Jukun ancestry but the people in the headquarters of the Jukun Kingdom keep arguing amongst themselves that Jukun is not a tribe. So what do we want those people out there to identify as? The Jukun people at home in Taraba are the problem of Jukun people worldwide, and they are the only ones with the solution if they care about finding it.

Our past was great, our present is s**t, and our future can be either of the two. Now is the time to decide.

SUGGESTIONS
1. A high-powered delegation be put together by our Supreme Leader to embark on a quest to propagate the unity gospel to all the corners of the earth where anything "Jukun" can be found. Their message must be of inclusiveness and reconciliation.

2. A team of historians to be set up, with members from all the other sub-tribes, to collect all their various histories so that we can come up with one believable version for the sake of posterity. Let the Kano or Bauchi Jukun know how they are Jukun and why they must begin to identify as Jukun going forward. The internet is the future, and everything must be uploaded to a Jukun website which anybody can access for research purposes.

3. A National Jukun Day will be set aside, and cultural activities will be carried out to showcase the rich traditions of the people. Jukun in various states and countries will all observe this day, adorn their traditional attires and participate in a festival of arts and culture. If sustained, this could become a tourist attraction for tourists from all over the world, just as people travel to the South West to witness the Ifa Festival of the Yoruba people.

4. Jukun history must become a part of the education curriculum for primary schools.

5. Jukun Traditional rulers must form an association to decide the future of their people in the new world that is bedevilled by insecurity. And to also remove religious sentiment from the factors responsible for our division.

6. Business networking should be encouraged amongst the Jukunoid at home and in the diaspora. If there's a Jukun grain merchant in Kano, open the Wukari market to them. If there's a Jukun billionaire in Gombe, he must be encouraged to support the businesses of Jukun in Chad or Lafia.

7. We must form a National Political bloc that promotes the Jukun agenda(if there's any) in the national political space. How many Jukun Governors, Ministers, and Senators do we have? Let them know that they represent a Jukun agenda and not their states of origin. We are too great to not have more than six states under our belt. We don't even have one. If we must have a Jukun president in the next 100 years, now is the time to start laying such a political foundation. We must also discourage our youths from wanting to become political house-boys to every useless politician. Any politician who cannot give them scholarships, business grants, or send them to acquire a skill - does not deserve loyalty or a chance to win another election.

As fearless as we are known to be, let the new Jukun Agenda become the hallmark of efficiency. No idiot should speak for us or represent us in any capacity. We must stop promoting and defending bad leaders/policies.

SUMMARY
For every great nation, there was a turning point in their history. A time when everything took a turn for the better because the people decided to change their story. The Jukun people must decide now or forever shut up when great people are discussing their achievements. We have been politically, economically, and socially irrelevant for too long. We were not great alone and must involve everybody to find out greatness again. The best time to start this discussion is NOW!!!
