THE STORM

Super Eagles legend Yakubu Aiyegbeni has crowned Chelsea and Ivorian football icon Didier Drogba as the greatest African player to have ever graced the Premier League.

In a recent interview, the former Everton striker, who is considered one of the league’s greats himself, weighed in on the ongoing debate about who truly deserves the title of the best African player in Premier League history.

“The Premier League has seen some of the finest players from Africa, and it’s natural that there would be debates about who the greatest is,” Yakubu stated. “You cannot say Salah is the greatest African to play in the Premier League. Drogba was something special because he was scoring for fun.”

“However, you have to give Salah credit for breaking the big legend’s record, which makes him one of the greatest Africans in the English top-flight, but for now, he is certainly not the greatest,” Yakubu added.

WHO ARE YOU TAKING, DROGBA OR SALAH?

Former Chelsea and Nigerian international, Mikel Obi has delivered a sharp response to Chelsea striker, Nicolas Jackson, declaring, “Keep scoring and I’ll shut up.”

This response was triggered by a post Nicolas Jackson made on his Instagram handle "Mikel Obi, shut your mouth, don’t talk sh*t, we are killing ourselves for Africa”

Do you think Jackson was rude or Mikel was hard on him?

On 90 minutes with Mathematical 7

What next, Nigeria!

The next Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles in 2028. 4 years are just around the corner, a blip in time, too short, probably, to develop podium-athletes at the 2028 Olympics. Or not?

Yet, there is a common acknowledgement that Nigeria should be amongst the superpowers of sport in the world. The country is underperforming (in everything). The evidence is clear in sports - at least 6 Nigerians won medals for other countries that adopted them.

Already, towards 2028, countries have started serious preparations. The Netherlands have secured their camp and training sites in Lós Angeles already, 4 years ahead of the Olympics!

Saudi Arabia have hired Nigeria’s Olympic Gold medalist, Ene Udo Obong - a Nigerian hired to birth champions like him.

Those are two obvious giant steps, already. There must be more.
Ambitious countries have already started their journey to Los Angeles. Is Nigeria one of them?

The big questions for Nigerians are:
1. What should Nigeria start to do now beyond lamenting the ‘failure’ at Paris 2024 and heads rolling?
2. How can the government be made to take the matter of sport seriously enough?
4. What are some clear, simple, practical, achievable, and measurable action points?
6. Should the focus be on some, or all, sports?
8. How can the ‘mercenary’ actions of Nigerian athletes be reduced?
10. How can domestic sports development and funding be realistically achieved in partnership with government?
11. And more…..

Idorenyin Uyoe is an international consultant and expert with first-hand experience and a ring-side ticket to events at Paris 2024. He observed and worked behind the scene with some of the topmost athletes, officials and organizations of many countries at the games

Godwin Enakhena, is an administrator of ‘ Friends United By Sports’, FUBS, a body comprising the ‘who’s who’ in Nigerian sports across all sectors. He moderates the social media platform that contains some of the most authoritative views and opinions on Nigerian sports.

This Saturday morning, on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’, Nigerians all over the world will drink lavishly from the uncommon insights and experiences of these two sports giants, and start to glean possibilities into the future of Nigerian sports.

A not-to-be-missed show from 7:30 am, Nigerian time (same as GMT), on Saturday August 24, 2024, on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM on terrestrial radio, and online on

Dr. Olusegun Odegbami MON, OLY, AFNIIA, FNIS.
