It is extremely rare, unheard of and possibly, barring this instance, virtually impossible to find a masking tradition in west Africa that features a ‘heavy’ aggressive mask that is headed by women. A twist of tradition happened in the Izzi (northeastern Igbo) village group of Nkaliki in 1975 when the community oracle, Uke, asked Nkaliki women to organise and dance Ogbodo Enyi in honour of its work saving them from child-killing evil spirits. A woman in this picture is one of the women maskers of Nkaliki shot by Herbert Cole in 1983 dancing an Ogbodo Enyi mask amidst her female supporters. The mask is originally a men’s mask representing leadership and takes on aspects of an elephant (ogbodo enyi meaning ‘elephant spirit’) and is somewhat aggressive when worn by men.

The Ogbodo Enyi of the women’s society, although aesthetically similar to its male counterpart, is considered to be different from that of the male and the male and female maskers never appear in the same context. The female Ogbodo Enyi is embraced by the women of the community and it is worn by a woman who is selected by the ogbodo, like her male counterparts, through divination and a mask is commissioned by the women. Although a few younger men of the community do not acknowledge it, the female Ogbodo Enyi is well respected by the elders of the community and the male Ogbodo Enyi masker acknowledges female maskers during the males performance, a special occurrence since masks are usually separated from women. This is the only documented existence of a masking tradition headed by women in Igbo culture and probably Nigeria where masking traditions are usually exclusively male privileges from which women are largely barred. — Information summarised from Herbert Cole, Chike Aniakor (1984). ukpuru.

DSS Should Arrest People Making Unsubstantiated Claims on Social Media - Gov. Umahi

Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State has urged the Department of State Security Service, DSS, to arrest people making unsubstantiated claims on social media.

Governor Umahi said this during an interview on Channels TV monitored by IGBERE TV on Thursday.

Umahi attributed the high level of crime in the country to "unpatriotic acts" by many Nigerians. He said many political leaders from various regions go on television to attack each other and "castigate the leader of the country".

Umahi further said that political leaders making unguarded statements should be summoned by relevant security agencies for explanations, adding that the country cannot afford to be plunged into another war.

In his words,

"If you are making a statement on social media and call it freedom of speech, you must come to the law to substantiate it."

He said the communal clash in Ebonyi would have stopped if not for politicians making unguarded statements on social media.

"Never in the history of this country have we been so divided because of politics, because people want power by all means," the governor lamented. On the rampant burning of police stations in the southeast, Umahi described the act as "pure criminality".

Suspension of Hon. Victor Aleke: Group point at Ezza Politician.

*Abakaliki TV*

Group know as Izhi Agenda has accused an Ezza born politician and member representing Ezza North West State constituency, Hon. Victor Chukwu as being use to distablise the unity of Izhi people ahead of 2023 election, in a statement made available in Izzi Agenda Forum page and signed by Mr. Kelechi Opoke Esq read it parts

*SUSPENSION OF HON. VICTOR ALEKE, A CALCULATED PLAN TO FRUSTRATE IZHI AGENDA 2023*

Izhi Agenda Forum condemn in a strongest term the suspension of Hon. Victor Aleke, the honorable member representing the good people of Ebonyi north west state constituency of Ebonyi state.

The motion of suspension of Hon. Victor Aleke was moved by Ezza born politician and Hon. Member representing people of Ezza North west state constituency Hon. Victor Chukwu on a truncated allegation of gross misconduct and failure to follow due process in managing the internally generated revenue IGR, of the house.

Suspending an elected officer that represent his people on a mere allegation which has not even proven is not just an abuse of power but a move to test the resolved unity of our people, our unity is beyond being loyal or under instructions to please any Political class in order to gain favour from anybody.

Hon. Victor Aleke was only elected to represent his people in the state house of assembly and not to serve any body’s interest, and his unlawful suspension over a truncated allegation is an infringement of rights of his entire constituents and it’s against Nigeria constitution to suspend anybody without proving the allegation alleged against him by Ezza born politician, Hon. Victor Chukwu.

If truly that the house is not acting on the script of their political lord, why is it that is during the period that Hon. Victor Aleke refused to join governor Dave Umahi to defect to APC that he was suspended. Everyone has right to belong to any Political party and no body should be bulled or persecuted for refusing to join a particular political party.

We are seeing the whole thing as plan to use some elements in Izhi land to distablise already built unity in Izhi land, and we are calling all the members of Ebonyi state house of assembly to immediately lift the the suspension they imposed on Hon. Victor Aleke and that honourable members of the house, mostly from Izhi exraction should championship the move as Izhi Agenda is not going to support anybody who is using his personal ambition to threaten the unity of Izhi people , *and such person will henceforth seen as enemy of Izhi Agenda*.

Ebonyi Lawmaker, Hon Victor Aleke Suspended Over Alleged Misconduct

*Abakaliki TV*

The member representing Ebonyi North West State Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon Victor Aleke, has been indefinitely suspended.

The suspension is over alleged misconduct and failure to follow due process in managing the internally generated revenue, IGR, of the House.

The leader of the House and member representing Ezza North West state constituency, Hon. Victor Chukwu moved the motion for his suspension, and it was seconded by a member whose name is yet to be identified.

Hon. Chukwu argued that Hon Victor Aleke treated the Committee on IGR recently set up by the House with disdain.

However, the speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru put the motion for the suspension of Hon Aleke into votes, and the members of the House in a voice vote unanimously adopted his suspension.

Shortly after the plenary, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Hon. Chukwu Arinze, while addressing journalists, said: “The House has a rule. There are things you don’t do as an honourable member and anybody that flouts the rule of the House should be suspended, and he is not the only one that has been suspended in the House because of such thing.

“He happens to violate the rule, and it has nothing to do with defection or any political party. It was the issue of the Committee that was set up, and it was clearly stated at the chamber, it has nothing to do with political affairs.

“His offence anyway is misconduct. He did not follow the rule of the IGR committee that was set up by the House because he refused to operate with the engagement of the Committee and that’d is why the Committee recommended his suspension” he stated.

Sad tale of one Nigeria
In picture 1 is Terwase Agwarza, a Benue militia leader who repented and laid down his arms as he surrendered to Nigerian security for amnesty. He was however killed yesterday by the military, after he surrendered.

In picture 2 is Governor Masari of Katsina state and the military representative in a Peace talk with bandits. The irony is that the bandit is comfortably wielding assault rifle in the presence of a state Governor and the military, yet nobody killed him.

In Picture 3 are repentant Boko Haram members in new uniforms provided by the Federal government. In spite the fact that they have killed uncountable soldiers and cost Nigeria so much money, they were still pardoned, rehabilitated and even integrated into the security agencies.

The sad story of our Nigeria today.

Court stops luxury buses operations in Kano.

A Kano Chief Magistrate Court on Wednesday restrained Luxury Bus owners from operating at New Road, Sabo Geri and anywhere in the state pending the hearing of a motion on notice.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Rakiya Lami Sani said the restraining order followed an exparte application filed by Counsel to Kano Roads and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Barrister Mutawakkil Isaq Muhammad suspending the operations of 15 luxury bus owners.

The Court ordered the commissioner of police to seal off the luxury buses motor park located at New Road in Sabo Geri and any other terminals of the defendants.

Solacebase reports that defendants in the suit are, Service Tarzan Motors, Best Way Motors, Landstar Express, Delta Express, Welfare Transport,G.U.O Motors, F.G Onyewe Motors and Godbless EzenwantaMotors.

Others are Young Shall Grow Motors, Ifeanyi Chukwu Motors, Bonnyway Motors,Chimeze Motors, Gobison Motors, S D. Express and First Tarzan Motors.

Chief Magistrate, Rakiya Lami Sani then adjourned the matter to September 14th, to hear the motion on notice.

KAROTA had earlier directed the Luxurious bus owners to relocate from the Sabon Gari Park to Ungwua-Uku Motor park, but the Luxurious bus association refused to comply with the directives.

A statement issued by KAROTA Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa the Managing Director of the Agency Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, warned that any Luxurious Bus owner who violates the court order will have himself to blame.

'’He said, despite not obtaining permit to operate in the state, the agency allowed the bus owners to relocate to the new park to continue their businesses but they decided to disobey the agency’s order which necessitated the legal move to avoid further crisis, ‘’said the statement.

24/06/2020

The gentleman sitting to the right of Lord Frederick Lugard in this picture (see below) is Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe.

He’s the father of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the last Governor-General and first President of Nigeria.

Obed-Edom Azikiwe was a very influential member of Lugard’s administration.

You can see from the photo how highly Lugard regarded him.

More About Zik’s Father

Obed Edom Azikiwe was Lord Lugard’s private secretary.

Sadly, he passed on in 1958, two years before Nigeria’s independence, at the age of 78.

Undoubtedly, he would have loved to see his son Zik sworn in as Nigeria’s first Head of State. But fate had a different plan.

Peace Through Negotiations

It was Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe that drafted – and humanised in accordance with his abillity – all the treaties Lugard signed with our traditional rulers.

He it was that drafted treaty Lugard signed with the Obong of Calabar, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Oba of Benin, the Alaafin of Oyo that came before Lugard amalgamated Nigeria.

Historians have suggested that Azikiwe softened the harshness of many of these treaties.

By so doing, he is said to have prevented bloody wars between the British and Nigerian groups by not only softening the harshness of the protectorate agreements, but also persuading both Lugard and powerful Nigerian traditional rulers to come to agreement.

Speaking on the issue, a history expert, Omoluabi Olayomi Koiki, suggested that these traditional rulers must have been happy to sign once Mr Azikiwe presented the agreements to them. They seemed to have a lot of trust in Mr Azikiwe.

The only traditional ruler who flagrantly refused to sign any treaty unless the phrase “protection” was explained to him was Mazi Jubo Juboha, also known as Jaja of Opobo.

Obed-Edom Azikiwe was based in Lugard’s head office at Zungeru. Zungeru was Nigeria’s amalgamation capital.

Zungeru was then what Abuja is to Nigeria today.

And Lugard’s office was the colonial version of A*o Rock.

The senior Azikiwe’s job can be summarised as negotiating to prevent or reduce violence between colonial Britain and Nigerian kingdoms.

Obed-Edom Azikiwe should be thanked and honoured for his work in preventing or ending wars between the colonial masters and powerful Nigerian kingdoms.

He was a master negotiator who seemed to have the trust of both Lord Lugard and our powerful traditional rulers.

And he used that influence to bring about peace. Had he not been there, you can imagine…

He didn’t succeed in all his efforts. And his son the Zik of Africa used a very different approach that together with the efforts of our founding fathers and.the Zikist Movement persuaded the British to grant Nigeria independence. But clearly, he was a father of Nigeria in his own time.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF
HOLY NWEJE: The story of an Igbo Saint:

Hezekiah Okoro Nweje, was an Anglican priest.

A native of Onitsha in Anambra state. He was born in 1919 and died in June 1962.

He was nicknamed "Holy Nweje" because of his very humble, extreme righteous, easy going & a humanitarian life he lived. He was tenaciously devoted to the things of God. Whatever gifts he receives from the church he shepherded was always shared with those in the vineyard, the poor and the less privileged. He doesn't hoard·them at the expense of the needy.

In his philosophy, he believed that wealth was sharing what you have without hoarding it. At a time, he was nominated for the position of the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, he declined and nominated someone he felt was more qualified

Rev. Hezekiah Okoro Nweje was seen as an upright, spotless and a righteous man. It was all those outstanding qualities he possessed while alive that brought about the name "Holy Nweje". Depicting how holy one can be. He believed ones anger should not see the next moment.

In May 1956 Onitsha and Obosi were tussling for a piece of land, Rev Nweje was called as a witness, he told the Judge that none of the towns owned the land, na "Ani bu ani Chukwu" The land and thereof is of the lord. That ended the land tussle. He was always on the side of peace.·

Around April 1956, during the daytime local thieves invaded his house in Onitsha and stole tubers of yam and fowl, he ran after them and told them to come and take more cited hunger as the reason for their unconventional behavior. What a man!

Growing up in Igbo land, if seen or perceived as an upright person, you would be called or nicknamed "Holy Nweje" When next you're called HOLY NWEJE, do not feel ashamed or mocked. It tells good of you. Nweje Lane in Onitsha metropolis is a street named to immortalize him. END HISTORY DEY SWEET CTHE

*WHY THE CHIEF OF STAFF IS POWERFUL*

*What Is the Role Of The Chief of Staff?*

The Chief of Staff is an Assistant to the President. The Chief of Staff oversees the Executive Office of the President (EOP). This office was created in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is responsible for a variety of critical functions in support of the president’s work and agenda.

*Primary responsibilities of the Chief of Staff*

The duties of the Chief of Staff vary greatly in each administration, according to the needs and desires of each president. The position typically plays both a managerial and advisory role that encompasses several important functions:

√Select and supervise key staff

√Control access to the Oval Office and the president

In fulfilling these duties, the Chief of Staff oversees and coordinates the efforts of the following offices within the EOP and A*o Rock Villa:

Council of Economic Advisers

Council on Environmental Quality

Executive Residence

National Security Staff

Office of Administration

Office of Management and Budget

Office of National Drug Control Policy

Office of Science and Technology Policy

Office of the Trade Representative

Office of the Vice President

Office of Cabinet Affairs

Office of the Chief of Staff

Office of Communications

Office of Digital Strategy

Office of the First Lady

Office of Legislative Affairs

Office of Management and Administration

Oval Office Operations

Office of Presidential Personnel

Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs

Office of Scheduling and Advance

Office of the Staff Secretary

Office of the Villa Counsel

The average term-of-service for a Chief of Staff is nothing less than four years.

*History of Chief of Staff using white house as a case study*

Beginning with George Washington, each president employed a private secretary, but it was not until President Buchanan’s administration in 1857 that Congress created an official office called the “Private Secretary at the White House” and funded the position. During President McKinley’s administration, the official Secretary to the President was designated.

The Secretary to the President was a respected government office held by highly talented men and considered worthy of cabinet rank and an oath of office. The role combined personal and professional assignments that were highly delicate and required great skill and discretion. In contrast, the Appointment’s Secretary served to control access to the president and manage the president’s schedule.

In 1939, during President Roosevelt’s second administration, the foundation of the modern White House office was created. Congress, at President Roosevelt’s request, approved the creation of the Executive Office of the President, which reported directly to the President of the United States.

In 1946, the position of Assistant to the President of the United States was established and charged to oversee the affairs of the White House. In 1953, President Eisenhower re-designated the position as the White House Chief of Staff. This new system was not fully adopted immediately, however, as President Kennedy and President Johnson retained Appointments Secretaries.

The Chief of Staff became a permanent fixture of White House administrations beginning with the Nixon administration in 1968. Every president since has designated a White House Chief of Staff.

*On the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari as the Nigeria New Chief of Staff*

Many condemned his character, age and ethnic identity forgetting that no one is perfect. The pancake no matter how flat has two sides.

We should be more concerned if a public appointee is a just man or woman. Instead, our attention is focused on pedestrian issues like "is he a true Yoruba man," "Hausa man," "Fulani man" or "Igbo man?" Since the appointment of Gambari as Chief of Staff to the President, I have seen people arguing about his ethnic identity and reminding us of the difference between genuine Yoruba man and a fake one.

There is no guarantee that your life will be automatically better off just because of a member of your ethnic group is given a public appointment. Poverty doesn't know the difference between an authentic and fake Yoruba man. When you go to the market, do you play the ethnic card to get a bag of rice at N5,000?

We should pray for good and just leaders. If leaders are not just, we collectively pay the price for their injustice, regardless of their ethnic and religious identity. Our elites are united by common interests regardless of religious and ethnic backgrounds.

Tell me how a cabal represents the interests of the ordinary Nigerians merely because they share common religion and ethnicity with the masses? The Yoruba contractors don't care about whether Gambari is an authentic Yoruba man or not, provided they are getting patronage from the government. Let's stop deceiving ourselves.
