A year is gone since I was rudely roused from my bed and clamped into detention. Sixty-five days in chains, many weeks of starvation, months of mental torture and, recently, the rides in a steaming, airless Black Maria to appear before a Kangaroo Court, dubbed a Special Military Tribunal where the proceedings leave no doubt at all that the judgement has been written in advance. And a sentence of death against which there is no appeal is a certainty.

Fearful odds? Hardly. The men who ordain and supervise this show of shame, this tragic charade are frightened by the word, the power of ideas, the power of the pen; by the demands of social justice and the rights of man. Nor do they have a sense of history. They are so scared of the power of the word, that they do not read. And that is their funeral.

When, after years of writing, I decided to take the word to the streets to mobilize the Ogoni people, and empower them to protest the devastation of their environment by Shell, and their denigration and dehumanization by Nigeria's military dictators, I had no doubt where it could end. This knowledge has given me strength, courage and cheer and given me psychological advantage over my tormentors.

Only yesterday, the spirit of Ogoni magicked into my cell a lovely poem by Jack Mapanje, the veteran of Kamuza Banda's jails. Four years without charge, I had met Jack in Potsdam in person in 1992 and wondered how he had survived it all. Writing from Leeds University, his poem urged me to wear the armour of humour. The note at the end was also signed by Chengerai Hove, the award winning Zimbabwean novelist. How wonderful to know how many fine men, the best brains, care for one's distress?

And yes, there has been humour along the way. At noon, on the 16th of March, 1995, my arch enemies, Shell, and the Nigerian Government met at the Northumberland offices of the Nigerian High Commission. They had some interesting consensus. Shell had not been paid for four months. The High Commissioner, nettle by the endeavours of Anita and Gordon Roddick on behalf of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni people, devised "ulterior motives" (such as a coup d'etat against the latest Nigerian military dictator, you know) and wondered how Shell could help with "counter measures". Shell assured the unhappy men that they were up to the antics of the " propagandists". and were scoring successes. Shell was making its own film which would balance the films commissioned on the Ogoni by Channel 4. Shell had even succeeded in convincing some campaigners of the rightness of its cause. The High Commissioner, pleased by that development, urged that the Shell film be screened before Channel 4 film being produced by Catma Films. He promised to assist Shell "overcome any bureaucratic problems they may encounter in producing the films". Shell reminded the High Commissioner how one Mr Boele had pretended to travel to Nigeria as a tourist but used the opportunity to conduct his research and interviews with various groups and individuals. The lesson, beware of human rights activists masquerading as tourists. Do not grant them visas. But please, the Nigerian Government must pay Shell because " lack of payment often leads to unemployment and unrest". Meeting ended.

Thus the conspirators. Nothing about ending the genocide of the Ogoni, the trumped-up charges of murder against Ogoni leaders, the widespread misery caused the Ogoni by the conspiratorial efforts of Shell and successive Nigerian military dictators. Just money and how to deflect concerned public opinion.

Untimely, however, the fault lies at the door of the British Government. It is the British Government which supplies arms on CREDIT to the military dictators of Nigeria knowing full well that all such arms will only be used against innocent, unarmed citizens. It is the British Government which makes noises about democracy in Nigeria and Africa but supports military dictators to the hilt. It is the British Government which supports the r**e and devastation of the environment by a valued taxpaying, labours employing organisation like Shell. I lay my travails, the destruction of the Ogoni and other peoples in the Niger Delta at the door of the British Government. Ultimately, the decision is for the British people, the electorate to stop this grand deceit, this double standards which has lengthened the African nightmare and denigrates humanity.

Whether I live or die is immaterial. It is enough to know that there are people who commit time, money and energy to fight this one evil among so many others predominating worldwide. If they do not succeed today, they will succeed tomorrow. We must keep on striving to make the world a better place for all of mankind. Each one contributing his bit, in his or her own way.

I salute you all.

BREAKING: EFCC OPERATIVES INVADES JUSTICE MARY ODILI’S ABUJA RESIDENCE
At least 50 operatives were said to have arrived at the senior jurist’s Abuja residence on Friday evening with immediate efforts to break in.

Armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have visited the residence of Supreme Court Justice Mary Odili, Peoples Gazette learnt.

The operatives arrived at Mrs Odili’s Abuja residence on Friday evening with immediate efforts to break in, sources told The Gazette. The judge immediately and vehemently resisted the attempts to raid her residence by the operatives, saying she had no business with them.

“She told them to go and meet her husband because she does not have any matter pending before them,” our source said under anonymity because they did not get permission to comment on an ongoing operation. Armed police officers were also amongst over 50 operatives said to be part of the operation.

Peter Odili, the Supreme Court jurist’s husband and former Rivers governor, has been facing corruption charges raised by the EFCC. Earlier this week, a federal judge ordered the immediate return of his international passport, saying anti-graft prosecutors have failed to substantiate grounds for continuous seizure of the politician’s passport.

Officials could not immediately say whether or not the ongoing standoff at Mrs Odili’s residence was because of her husband’s case.

The development comes five years after operatives of the State Security Service broke into the residences of over a dozen federal judges, including three of the Supreme Court at the time. Some of the judges have since died, with their family members their health deteriorated following the raids.

The Gazette has called and sent messages to the EFCC for comments.

TWITTER CONDITIONS WILL AFFECT FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, OTHER APPS IN NIGERIA— LAI MOHAMMED
The Federal Government on Monday said the recommended conditions for the lifting of the suspension imposed on Twitter will be applicable to all Over-The-Top and other social media platforms in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made this known during an interview with TVC.

The minister, who refused to disclose the recommendations by the Federal Government ministerial negotiation team to engage with Twitter on the suspension, said the engagements with Twitter had been positive and fruitful.

“All I can say is that the recommendations we are going to make will not only be applicable to Twitter but they will be applicable to all OTTs and other social media platforms in Nigeria.

“Today, we are dealing with Twitter, we don’t want a situation where we will be dealing with Facebook tomorrow and Instagram the next day. Our recommendations will be very comprehensive.”

When asked on likely date the Twitter ban will be lifted, the minister said “last night, the ministerial team met under my chairmanship and we reviewed the position of things.

“I want everyone to wait for the committee to officially give its reports to the president but things are looking very positive and rosy,’’ Mohammed said.

NIGERIA-CHINA N720BN CURRENCY SWAP COLLAPSES
Three years after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) signed a currency swap deal with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), Nigerians are yet to feel the impact of that arrangement, especially as the free fall of naira, currently standing at N570/$1 at the parallel market persists.

In April 2018, the CBN issued the regulations for a US$2.5 billion currency swap agreement in June same year; designed to facilitate trade between the two countries and enhance foreign reserve management.

But tongues have already started wagging that the N720 billion swap deal for at least 15 billion Yuan (Renminbi) (equivalent of $2.4 billion in June 2018) between the two countries has failed to achieve its purpose since it was sealed.

The Bilateral Currency Swap (BCS) agreement was inspired by trade facilitation. It was to allow importers of goods from China to conclude their transactions in Yuan instead of the US Dollar) and vice-versa. This was done to reduce the demand of the US dollars, lift the undue pressure on the naira at the time, consistent with the CBN’s naira management strategies.

While the CBN has continued with the implementation of the BCS with the Peoples’ Bank of China through fortnightly Renminbi auctions, it was gathered that bureaucratic bottlenecks have become a major challenges for traders and importers transacting business with China.

According to CBN’s Financial Markets Activity Report for Half Year 2020, CNY1, 746.40 million has been sold from inception to the end of June 2020, which is N89.12billion using CNY/N51.03 as conversion rate (as of June 2020).

Prior to the agreement, the CBN was in discussions with China on the deal for more than two years. Nigeria is the third African nation (after South Africa and Egypt) to sign a currency swap deal with China. The agreement was to allow the two countries to swap a total of 15bn Yuan (renminbi) for N720billion or vice-versa for three years and would be extended by mutual consent, for the purpose of trade finance and direct investment between the Peoples’ Republic of China and the Federal Government of Nigeria and maintain financial market stability.

Following the implementation of the initiative, the value of the domestic currency also responded to the news amongst other factors. The Naira was selling at N48.6/CNY in January 2018 before the announcement, it appreciated by 494base points (4.94%) after the deal had been signed and announced. It further appreciated by +8.23 per cent at the end of the year (2018).

In December 2020, the Naira against the Chinese Yuan had depreciated by -30.27 per cent against the gains recorded in 2018, this can be attributed to demand for the Yuan as the US dollar became even more expensive for business transactions, more awareness of the swap deal with China by traders and the adjustment of the naira by CBN during the period. Although, CBN has not released data showing how much Renminbi has been sold between July 2020 till date.

Analysts in Proshare expected the naira to have depreciated further against Yuan, this is because converting directly to the Chinese currency for transactions in China would be cheaper than converting to US Dollar, then converting to the Yuan for importation/trading. However, unnecessary delays, bureaucracy, and corporate bottlenecks in accessing the Renminbi have been the experience for most traders involved in business transactions with Chinese firms.

In 2018, imports from China accounted for 25.12 per cent of total imports to the country, while China was not part of the top ten (10) export destinations of Nigerian products. There was a decline in 2019 to 20.49 per cent, which was defied analyst expectation, as goods from China were expected to be cheaper following the currency swap deal, thereby increasing our imports from the country.

There was a rebound in 2020 which continued in Q1 2021, accounting for 29.34 per cent of total imports to Nigeria. Our export position with Nigeria has also increased, accounting for 4.91 per cent and 6.5 per cent of total export in 2020 and Q1 2021 respectively.

The swap deal had the potential of improving the FX position of the country as China accounts for a large portion of our imports. However, implementation has always been a huge hurdle for the Nigerian government, and this policy has not proved to be an exception, another failed policy.

The target of N720bn to 15bn Renminbi to be swapped in three years has not been met, traders and importers still have to US dollars, then the Yuan for business transactions with Chinese firms, which is expensive leading to a constant hike in the prices of commodities imported from China, as the cost of operations is passed to the final consumers trickling down to rise in inflation. Also, the value of the Naira against the US dollar is still depreciating (selling at N570/USD at the BDC market today.

Meanwhile, as the Naira continues to depreciate against the Dollar, some experts have expressed concern that the deal with China, which was welcome with high hope to salvage the local currency, has been sabotaged by regressive economic forces, so says an analyst.

According to Lukman Otunuga, a Senior Analyst with FXTM, the deal failed to achieve its goal three years after it was launched because the same destructive forces sabotaging the Naira remain present as ever. “A terrible combination of dollar shortages, inflationary pressures, weak macroeconomic conditions, exposure to external risks, and multiple exchanges continue to weigh heavily on the local currency”, he lamented.

Experts believe that since almost 70 per cent of the country’s imports come from China and Asia , while only about 12 per cent come from USA, ‘why then must we use Dollars to transact business with China at (then) more than N360 per $1 instead of N56.42 to the Yuan?’

Going by this rate, Yuan is about 642 per cent, or more than six times cheaper than the dollar at the foreign exchange (forex) market. The CBN, in July 2018 circular by its Director, Financial Markets Department, Dr. Alvan Ikoku, announced plans to start bi-weekly auctions of the Chinese yuan, which is a maximum of 15 billion Renminbi or N720 billion with a three-year tenor. Four banks, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and Zenith Bank Plc were earlier appointed as the settlement banks for the deal. And for any authorised banks to access the bi-weekly auction of the Chinese currency, such dealers “shall open Renminbi accounts with a correspondent bank and furnish the CBN with its Renminbi account details which may either be with a bank onshore or offshore China”.

Oduah, represented by Mrs Amaka Ononuju, at her defection to APC at state party secretariat, Awka, said that she decided to decamp from the PDP to APC to enable her do more for her constituency.

She said as a member of the opposition party she was unable do much to the development of her people.

“It will amount to a self-deceit for anyone to say that President Muhammadu Buhari, and, APC do not mean well for the South East region,” she said.

She, however, commended Buhari for the level of “infrastructural developments his administration had executed in the South East.

She said the record of the many infrastructural developments done in the South East by the APC federal government of Buhari are there for anyone to see.

She said that with her joining the APC, she would henceforth be within the power circles where decisions are taken on the development of the country, and, assured that the development would engender aggressive development in her senatorial zone.

WOMAN IMPREGNATED TWICE BY HER TWIN BROTHER INSISTS ON MARRYING HIM —SAYS HE'S TOO GOOD IN BED
If it were possible to turn back the hands of the clock, Amos Kunde would be the happiest man on earth. He would do anything to reverse an adventure that culminated in getting his twin sister Juliana pregnant twice, culminating in her being delivered of two babies for her twin brother.

The 29-year-old native of Guma Local Government Area, Nasarawa State is in a dilemma as he says he is thoroughly embarrassed by the development while his twin sister and mother of his two children insists that she is married to him and has reached her destination as far as marriage is concerned.

Born to the family of the late Patrick Kunde and his wife Torkwase, the family had settled in Awe LGA of Nasarawa State as farmers until the couple and other relations were killed during the farmers/herders crisis in Nasarawa State in 2013. The twins, however, survived the attacks because some merciful ones among the herdsmen who attacked their community decided to spare their lives.

Orphaned and without any formal education, Amos and Juliana adopted farming as their source of livelihood. But because of the unsafe nature of Awe area at that time, they decided to relocate to Doku, a village in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State sharing border with Benue State.

For three successive farming seasons, Amos and his twin sister were blessed with good harvests, prompting their decision to stay put in the area. Although Juliana was deflowered by a boyfriend of hers who incidentally was also killed during the herdsmen attack, in Doma, she found solace in the brotherly love exhibited by Amos until the devil visited and they started an amorous relationship until Juliana became pregnant sometime in 2015.

The twins, however, tried to keep it secret and made several attempts to abort the pregnancy without success and Juliana was eventually delivered of a baby girl. The widely held belief in the community, however, was that Juliana was impregnated by someone other than her twin brother, particularly as she had told some members of the community who cared to know that the man that got her pregnant had run away.

Since the twins are not Doku indigenes, not many people in the area were really interested in whatever they chose to do with their lives. But curiousity was provoked in the village last year as Juliana took in again and came up with the same story as the first pregnancy.

As the 2021 farming season approached in April, they took advantage of the farmers/herders crisis in Doma which claimed the lives of more than 50 farmers and displaced virtually the entire inhabitants by moving to Tse Ugba village in Keana LGA of Nasarawa State to continue their farming activities.

Because Tse Ugba was a new environment and life was disrupted in many settlements around Nasarawa State during the April/May crisis, many of the people in their new settlement concluded that they were husband and wife. They settled down in the community and Juliana was delivered of a baby boy about three months ago.

The bubble however burst last week when Amos decided to take a legitimate wife from the proceeds of the farm produce they had both laboured for. He met a stiff resistance from Juliana, a nursing mother who demanded to know her fate and those of her two kids when the new wife arrives.

Unfortunately, Amos’ response to her poser was far from encouraging as he allegedly told her that it was high time she began to look for a husband, adding that he was done with her and needed a legitimate wife.

Irked that her twin brother could seek to dump her for another woman after sleeping with her to produce two kids, Juliana resolved not to have any of her brother’s antics. Both of them are now in a fix as to what to do about the ugly development since Juliana decided to spill the beans.

Our correspondent, who got wind of the development, visited their new settlement in Tse Ugba, a border community with Benue State to enquire into the scandal.

Upon his arrival in the village, the twin couple was seated under a mango tree alongside their first born baby after an intense quarrel.

How it all started

First to speak with our correspondent was Juliana who did a summary of all that had transpired between them since they started an amorous relationship. She said it started as a joke on the farm which later resulted in the both of them having s*x at home later that night.

She said: “Then, we were stranded in Doma because Awe was no longer safe for us as orphans who are purely farmers. Relocating from Awe after losing our parents and relatives to herdsmen killings, we were in the farm arranging harvested yams when his trouser tore as he made to sit down to eat, and I saw his big and long manhood and smiled.

“When he noticed that I smiled, he asked why and I told him that his manhood could kill someone’s daughter. We both laughed over it.

“That same day, after we returned home from the farm, I was trying to turn food in our local kitchen in the night and he entered unnoticed to check whether all his chickens had roosted.

“I was not sitting well and did not have any underwear on as I was turning the food. I only put on a wrapper. Then he saw my private part because he was flashing a torch to check his chickens in the kitchen.

“Then he saw my p***y and shouted in appreciation of how big it was. I told him that we are twins and that we were bound to have the same features; maybe we took that from our late parents.

“The incident later resulted in s*x in our thatched house. He came to my room in the night, asking for a razor blade. From there, I agreed to his request for a s*x test since both of us appreciated each other’s private organs, though it was also a bid to satisfy our s*xual urge since both of us had not had s*x after we relocated amidst herdsmen crisis and lost contacts with our loved ones.

“But somehow, it became regular as both of us enjoyed it.”

Juliana said from that point, the affair continued and they both agreed to keep it secret. Within the period, she said, they had two kids together.

She said: “He never promised to marry another woman. What he told me was that we would make efforts to send them to school since both of us never went to school; that we were tired of moving from one settlement to another since s*x was secretly involved in the relationship and he became my husband and from the blue.

“Them he suddenly came up with a plan to take a wife. I asked him about my fate and those of our two kids since the new wife would come in and may not accept the development on ground.

“I told him that with two kids, it is as good as we are married and there is no need bringing in somebody who would frustrate the kids.

“He told me and the kids to find our level. I won’t accept that. He lured me into this mess and he can’t abandon me now. His insistence on marrying a new wife without convincing me brought about the current crisis.”

Juliana also told our correspondent during a one on one conversation that she could not afford to share Amos with any woman because he is too good in bed.

She said: “He is quite good in bed. My former boyfriend, I mean the one who deflowered me in Awe but was killed by herdsmen is not anywhere near Amos in bed. He was quite gentle when we started, but what attracted me to him was the size and length of his dick. But as we move on much more regularly, I realised he was an expert in bed, and that really speeded up and tightened the relationship.

“He would throw me unto the bed, rip my clothes off and start the game in a very crazy way while slapping my b***s. He does it well and straight and did all other things to my satisfaction that it made me forget that we are brother and sister.

“He really gets me exhausted each time we play game, so I really felt bad and sad that someone else would share such with me. It is giving me a headache.”

She said she never thought that she could get pregnant when they started. “But when pregnancy came and I told him about it, we made fruitless effort to abort it to no avail. That was when we hatched this plan to keep it secret, and moving from one village to another due to herdsmen attacks helped the secret a great deal. That also took us far into the relationship.”

‘How my sister seduced me’

Amos, who reluctantly spoke with our correspondent, said his sister was the one that seduced him by always exposing herself while they worked together on the farm and whenever she was preparing food in the kitchen at home.

He said: “She knows that I always check on my chickens at night, so she would sit half naked before me. At first, it was embarrassing to me, but later I discovered that her actions were deliberate since she saw my private organ on the farm. “I noticed that her actions were an open invitation, and as a man, the devil visited me that faithful night when I needed a razor blade from her and the temptation came, leading to something else. We continued from that point with the result of two kids.

“My major reason for deciding to get married is for the woman to help me on the farm since she is nursing a baby. I didn’t mean to dump her. But she refused.

“Secondly, I did not understand how I would marry my own blood sister. It is a taboo and abomination in the land, though the thought came late. But I wanted to correct it and she is raising genuine issues about her future and the kids.

“But I thought she could get married and leave the kids with me while I remain with my wife who will take care of them, because it is a taboo. The kids may not survive in the future. That is what a friend told me and we need to correct it now.”

“I regret what happened and the shame my conduct from day one has brought to me, her and our late parents and relations. We never bargained for this when our parents and relations were murdered in cold blood by the herdsmen.”

Amos insisted that nothing would stop him from taking a new wife because he is reliably told that the children he is having with his blood sister may not survive.

“It is a taboo and abomination in the land. They may one day die mischievously. That is my fear. That is why I want to take a wife, but she does not want to understand my own views,” he added.

One of the elders in the village, Elder Kertyo Abiin, who is privy to the development, told our correspondent that what is happening is a taboo in the culture of the land.

“The two kids will not survive. It is not done anywhere. But these people are foreigners here. They only came to this place a few months ago from Doma during the crisis. But I am discussing with them to find a solution to the problem.

“He actually pleaded to keep the matter secret and resolve it without inviting security agents because there is nothing they can do as the harm has already been done long ago.

“There is nothing any security man can do, and no court in the land can resolve the issue because the relationship has already produced two kids.

“So I hope to handle it in the traditional way,” he said.
