POLICE OPERATION: The Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo on Friday led a police operation in Swakopmund. The operation was necessitated by the recent surge in criminal activities, including murders in the town. Erongo Region Police Commander Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, Erongo Governor Neville Andre Itope, and Swakopmund Mayor Dina Namubes, were among the patrollers.

FOUNDING TRADITIONAL GAMES: President of the Namibia Sports Commission Freddy Mwiya commended the MTC Dome in Swakopmund for taking on the responsibility of hosting the first ever all African Games for traditional sports tournament scheduled for 2026.

Mwiya was speaking on the sidelines of the signing agreement between the MTC Dome and the African Traditional Games Association, who are the organiser and co-hosts of the event.

The competition will host participants from different African countries who will compete in over 9 sports codes including traditional wrestling and tug of war, among others.

FOR THE NEEDY: President Nangolo Mbumba has said that the idea that the basic income grant should be given to every Namibian, including those who are employed, will only increase government expenditure; therefore, it should only be given to the needy.

CHURCH REGULATION:The Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN) executive committee chairperson, Reverend Heinz Mouton, says the Council has proposed for a comprehensive review with stakeholders to be conducted regarding the numbers of registered churches in Namibia to allow for a framework regulation of churches.

He said this during a CCN executive committee member’s courtesy visit with President Nangolo Mbumba on Friday, further stating that different groups have started with the process of a Private Members Bill to have the government regulate churches in Namibia.

BUSINESS FRIENDS: Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Peya Mushelenga says business between Namibia and Ghana is growing and that Namibia can learn a lot from its counterpart in areas such as the oil industry, agricultural sector as well as the cosmetics industry, with the recent surge in the interest of the Ghanaian shea butter by Namibian cosmetic companies.

Mushelenga made these remarks during the 5th Namibia-Ghana Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation at ministerial level.

The meeting attended by officials from both countries, aimed to review and implement bilateral agreements and MoC in a wide range of areas including trade and commerce, among others.

OFFICIAL TALKS: The Presidents of Namibia and Botswana Dr Nangolo Mbumba and Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi are leading official talks between their two governments in Swakopmund.

The meetings are attended by the various ministers and officials who will discuss topics such as political, diplomatic and legal affairs, economics, social and defence and security issues. The two presidents opened the meeting, followed by closed door talks.

A press conference will be held after the meeting.

DOWNING TOOLS: Namibia Industrial Development Agency (NIDA) workers are continuing to protest outside their headquarters in Windhoek. They are rejecting a once off payment of 5.4 percent proposed by management yesterday.

SUBSIDIES: Following the public outcry over the recent increased electricity tariffs, the Electricity Control Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Kahimise, announced on Wednesday afternoon that consumers will now be paying the scheduled approved tariffs for the 2023/2024 financial year for N.dollars 1.9856 per kilowatt instead of N.dollars 2.1444 per kilowatt for the 2024/2025 financial year.

This follows the government’s allocation of N.dollars 365 million to subsidise electricity consumers for the 2024/2025 financial year, effective 01 July 2024 to 30 June 2025.

ROBBED: Creation Night Club in Rundu was robbed of N.dollars 90 000 on Sunday.

The incident was confirmed by the Namibian Police Force Acting Regional Commander in the Kavango East Region deputy commissioner Eino Nambahu on Monday that two employees of the night club were busy counting stock and sales from the previous night when two robbers entered the night club.

The robbers managed to tie up one employee and over powered the bar lady before fleeing with the above mentioned money in cash.

BURIAL: More than a thousand Zambezi residents and visitors buried Reagan Mwalimu Limmy Kwala, the Branch Manager of Rundu's First National Bank (FNB) on Sunday.

Kwala died in a car accident that occurred on the Otavi-Otjiwarongo road.

The accident, which took the lives of nine people, occurred on June 18 in a head-on collision between two vehicles.

Kwala was buried in Ishuvi village, Katima Rural Constituency, Zambezi Region.
