OHANNESBURG - Monday's severe thunderstorms plunged many areas across Johannesburg into darkness.

City Power says the rains caused damage to electricity infrastructure, flooded transformer chambers and uprooted trees that fell on overhead cables.

It says the Main Delta Intake substation tripped due to an overhead line fault.

The outage is affecting several suburbs in the central, western, and southern parts of the metro.
Teams have been dispatched to investigate and repair.

The utility also says there has been a reported spike in electricity outage calls from frustrated customers.

It adds the number of complaints as well as damaged and flooded roads may delay response times.

City Power has apologised to customers for the inconvenience, and updates will be provided going forward.

World Population Hits 8 Billion, Creating Many Challenges

The world's population has hit an estimated 8 billion people on Tuesday, according to a United Nations projection, with much of the growth coming from developing nations in Africa.
According to the U.N., the population in sub-Saharan Africa is growing at 2.5% per year — more than three times the global average. Some of that can be attributed to people living longer, but family size remains the driving factor. Women in sub-Saharan Africa on average have 4.6 births, twice the current global average of 2.3.

Families become larger when women start having children early, and 4 out of 10 girls in Africa marry before they turn 18, according to U.N. figures. The rate of teen pregnancy on the continent is the highest in the world — about half of the children born last year to mothers under 20 worldwide were in sub-Saharan Africa.

Stampede at Fally Ipupa concert kills 11 in DRC’s capital

Interior minister blamed organisers for the packed concert headlined by African music star Fally Ipupa in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Eleven people were killed in a stampede at a packed concert headlined by African music star Fally Ipupa at the biggest stadium in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital, the country’s interior minister has said.

Interior Minister Daniel Aselo Okito on Sunday blamed the organisers for the deaths, saying the Martyrs’ stadium concert in Kinshasa “went beyond 100 percent capacity”.

The stadium was packed beyond its capacity of 80,000 and some of the crowd ended up forcing their way into the VIP and reserved sections, reporters of Reuters news agency at the concert said.

“Eleven people dead … including two police,” the minister told reporters at the stadium, sending condolences to relatives of the casualties.

He said he deplored the “loss of human life” and said the organisers “must be punished”.

Security forces had earlier fired tear gas to disperse violent crowds in the streets outside the stadium where many had gathered before the concert by Kinshasa-born Ipupa.

The 44-year-old is one of Africa’s leading musicians whose albums sell worldwide.

Singer-songwriter Ipupa, “like all Congolese singers”, had arrived several hours after the show had been scheduled to start, the agency noted.

The eventual number of attendees inside the stadium vastly exceeded the number of state and private security personnel present could control.

In 2020, French police evacuated the Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris after people started fires nearby in unrest before a planned Ipupa concert.

“It was a stampede,” that caused the deaths, a policeman on the scene told the official Congolese Press Agency ACP.

“The music lovers suffocated.”

Kinshasa police chief General Sylvain Sasongo had earlier told ACP nine people had died, amid reports the venue had been jammed with people for the local favourite’s performance, with one witness saying “even the corridors” of the stadium were overflowing.

ACP, which had reporters in the stadium covering the concert, said police had cordoned off three areas to secure the pitch, the VIP stand and the stage.

“Under the pressure of the crowd, the police could not hold out long,” ACP said.

Elon Musk completes $44bn Twitter takeover

The world's richest man, Elon Musk, has completed his $44bn (£38.1bn) takeover of Twitter, according to an investor in the firm.

A number of top executives, including the boss, Parag Agrawal, have reportedly been fired.

It brings to a close a saga that saw Twitter go to court to hold the billionaire to the terms of a takeover deal that he had tried to escape.

Mr Musk tweeted that his interest in the firm was not about making money.

Twitter investor Ross Ge**er, who is chief executive of Ge**er Kawasaki Investments in California, confirmed to the BBC that the deal had been completed.

"I think the court pushed him over the line," said Mr Ge**er. "Quite frankly, this has sort of been a disaster from the beginning, of course, starting off very aggressively courting Twitter in a way that really forced Twitter to the table... then getting all upset and having a public spat over what to me was pretty well known issues."

Thailand children’s daycare mass shooting death toll rises to 35
At least 35 children killed in attack by ex-Thai police officer who later shot dead his wife and child before turning his weapon on himself.
A former police officer opened fire at a daycare centre in Thailand killing at least 35 people, mostly children, before turning a weapon on his family and then himself.
The attacker – armed with a shotgun, pistol and a knife – began the killing spree in Nong Bua Lamphu province at about 12:30pm (05:30 GMT) on Thursday before fleeing the scene in a pick-up truck.
The dead included at least 23 children, said police Colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya. The gunman forced his way into a locked room where children were sleeping at the time, according to a witness.
After the attack, the gunman went home and killed his wife and child, Jakkapat said.
The attacker was named as former police officer Panya Khamrab, 34, and Jakkapat said he was dismissed from the force last year for drug use.
Nanthicha Punchum, acting head of the nursery, described harrowing scenes as the attacker barged into the building.
“There were some staff eating lunch outside the nursery and the attacker parked his car and shot four of them dead,” she said. “The shooter smashed down the door with his leg and then came inside and started slashing the children’s heads with a knife.”
The children at the daycare centre in Uthai Sawan, a town 500km (310 miles) northeast of the capital Bangkok, were mostly stabbed to death, police said.
Footage after the attack showed distraught parents weeping in a shelter outside the nursery, a yellow single-storey building set in a garden.

A 59-year-old man identified as Natangwe Nashiluwa on Thursday shot himself in his home, shortly after overturning his car.
According to Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga of the Namibian police, the incident happened at Oshali village, Endola Constituency on 29 September.
It is reported that the late Nashiluwa lost control of his vehicle and as a result, it overturned at about 23: 45 at Okakwa on the B1 road.
Police officers went to attend and upon arrival at the scene, a white Toyota pickup with a registration number N 4624 K was found on its roof on the western side of the road.
“It appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle which left the road, bumped a boundary wall of a house and overturned. The driver who was the sole occupant was not found at the scene. His footprints were tracked up to his house because officers wanted to assess whether he needed medical assistance. Upon arrival at his house, officers found that he locked himself in the house.” Kuwinga explained.
He shared that during the same evening, a report was received from Oshali village that the family members managed to open the late Nashiluwa’s room and that found his lifeless body.
“Upon arrival at the house, the police found the deceased laying on the bed with his feet on the ground and a gunshot wound on the right side of his head. An empty cartridge was found on the floor and a black Rugger pistol” Kuwinga stated.
He noted that the body was taken to Engela hospital for certification and is kept in Engela mortuary pending an autopsy.

Ntombela send disaster management teams to Jagersfontein

The Free State's Premier, Sisi Ntombela, has deployed the disaster management team and the Joint Operation Centre to Jagersfontein in the Kopanong Local Municipality, after a mine dam burst on Sunday morning.

Notmbela’s spokesperson, Palesa Chubisi, says the teams will determine the extent of the disaster and also carry out evacuation processes where necessary.

OFM News previously reported that some of the houses and cars were swept away by a strong stream of water in Jagersfontein.

“The Premier of the Free State, Sisi Ntombela, has learnt with the greatest shock of the disaster that happened in Jargesfontein in the Kopanong Local Municipality, wherein the mine dam in the area burst this morning, 11 September 2022 at around 06:00.

"More details on what may have caused the incident will be shared at a later stage once government has received a detailed report on the incident.

"Premier Ntombela is expected to visit the affected area this morning," Chubisi further adds.

According to the municipality's spokesperson, Solomzi Phama, over 30 houses may be affected, with a portion of the township also affected. He said the water has swept away belongings of residents and some of them have since been relocated to the nearest farm in that area.

However, police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, told OFM News that: "We are aware of the situation. It was reported but [there are] no full details as yet, and the police are still gathering more details."

30/08/2022

Angola's long-dominant party has won another five years in power, but with a much-reduced majority, the electoral commission has announced.

The MPLA, under President João Lourenço, took 51.2% in last week's election. Its closest rival, Unita, had its best-ever result with 44%.

Unita previously said it was considering contesting the outcome.

The MPLA, in power for nearly five decades, has faced criticism over high levels of poverty and unemployment.

Its share of the vote was down from the 61% it gained in the previous election in 2017, while Unita's share is sharply up from 27%.

Unita's leader Adalberto Costa Júnior last week rejected the provisional results, saying they did not match the party's own tally.

The MPLA leadership were celebrating at a gathering at the party's headquarters in the capital, Luanda, ahead of a speech by the president, says the BBC's Israel Campos in the capital, Luanda.

Mr Lourenço described the result as a "vote of confidence" that gave the party the responsibility to "promote dialogue and consultation", the AFP news agency quotes him as saying.

The MPLA has been in power since independence from Portugal in 1975.

It fought a protracted civil war with Unita until 2002, but the two decades of peace have not brought the gains that many had hoped for. Around half the population lives on less than $2 a day despite the country being rich in oil and minerals.

Mr Lourenço became president in 2017 after long-standing leader José Eduardo dos Santos stood down.

His anti-corruption campaign has opened a rift with the Dos Santos family and their supporters, some of whom have been sent to prison.

Dos Santos himself died last month in Spain at the age of 79. A funeral was held for him in Angola on Sunday despite a political row after his daughter, Tchizé dos Santos, opposed holding the ceremony in the country.

But a Spanish court ruled that the body should be repatriated to Dos Santos's widow in Angola.
