HUNDREDS of mothers who had come to get their maintenance money were sent away from the Katima Mulilo magistrates' court empty handed on Thursday because the money had allegedly been diverted to pay bail refunds.

Some of the frustrated women who spoke to The Namibian said they had been waiting at the courts since 08h00 for their August money but they were told there was no money.

“Our children are hungry, and we came to collect the money to buy them food. How can they prioritise bail refunds over us. We now have to come to court every other day to find out if they have money to pay us. I don't even stay in town for that matter,” said Maria Simasiku one of the women.

Another mother Chuma Sibuli, said she was hoping to buy medicine for her daughter, who has diabetes but now she will not be able to do so.

“My small child has to go without medicine because the bail refunds were prioritized over us. We have already waited for so long, now we have to wait longer. This is not fair, I also wanted to buy food for my daughter with part of that money. I was banking on that money,” she said.

Two children drown in sewage dam at Two children, aged three and four, died instantly after allegedly falling in a sewage dam at about 19h00 on Thursday at Onandjaba settlement, Okalongo constituency in Omusati region.

According to a crime report, it is alleged that three children, two girls and a boy (4), fell into the sewerage dam, which is about 500 meters at Onandjaba settlement.

The two girls drowned while the boy was rescued alive.

Omusati police regional commander Titus Shikongo said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

However, there are suspicions that the children were trying to reach for dead fish floating in the sewer dam.

The deceased children, who are said to be cousins from the same house, have been identified as Kuhatumwa Ndinelao (4) and Shivandu Penehafo Etuhole (3).

Their next of kin have been informed.

The surviving child, who is from a neighbouring house, was rushed to Onandjaba clinic for treatment and was later transferred to Oshikuku hospital where he is reported to be in a critical condition.

What's the latest from the scene?
A crowd has gathered at the collapsed building where a rescue team from Chile is working. It is still unknown if a person is alive under the rubble.
The rescuers were passing the building on Wednesday night when their dog gave a sign there was a person alive inside.
On returning this morning the dog went to the same place and gave the same sign. The group then used a scanner to search for a heartbeat or a breath from within, and came with equipment to dig down into the rubble.

The sudden deaths of more than 275 elephants in Northern Botswana made headlines earlier this year.

Tests have proved inconclusive, with a range of factors blamed for this mass die-off, including natural toxins.

More than 20 elephants have died in neighbouring Zimbabwe from a suspected bacterial infection or the stress of walking long distances for food and water.

In both cases, poaching has been ruled out.

Males were long thought to be largely solitary animals after gaining independence and leaving their family group. But there is growing evidence that males as well as females live rich social lives.

This has been harder to study in male elephants, which roam large distances and are more difficult to track.

Prof Darren Croft of the University of Exeter said the new work highlighted that old male elephants might act as repositories for ecological knowledge such as when and where to find food and water, which may in turn provide survival benefits for the young males who associate with them.

"These findings raise concerns over the removal of old males from elephant populations by trophy hunting and illegal poaching and point to the need to protect old male elephants," he said.

Older male elephants have an important role to play in the survival of the species by passing on their skills and knowledge to younger males, a study of African elephants suggests.

Matriarchs lead groups of daughters and their calves, while males grow up and leave the herd.

Mature bull elephants play an important role in leading these younger males, researchers have found.

And their loss by poaching or hunting could have "disastrous impacts".

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests older bulls are likely to occupy a similar role in male society as matriarchs in female breeding herds.

"It has long been known that older females make more effective leaders of breeding herds due to their enhanced experience - we provide compelling support for a similar role of older males in the male society," said Connie Allen of the University of Exeter and charity Elephants for Africa.

The researchers investigated the behaviour of more than 1,250 male African savannah elephants travelling to and from the Boteti River in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Botswana.

Lone male elephants accounted for a fifth of sightings on elephant pathways using camera traps, with adolescent males travelling along these routes less often than expected, suggesting lone travel is riskier for younger and less experienced males.

Mature adult bulls were more likely to travel at the front of groups of males, suggesting they may be important leaders with valuable ecological knowledge.

Survival secrets
The idea that lone older males do little for the survival of the species has been used as an argument to support the legal trophy hunting of old males.

However, the new research suggests that killing older males could have "disastrous consequences" in removing key figures in male elephant society.

"The oldest bulls, with potentially decades more experience of utilising the environment and navigating crucial resources, in our study were more likely to lead all-male groups," said Connie Allen.

"This suggests younger, newly independent, adolescent males target these individuals for their heightened social and ecological knowledge.

"Removing these rare, key individuals could have disastrous impacts on the wider bull population and lead to major disruption to intergenerational flow of information in this long-lived species."

Zombie fires spark record Arctic CO2 emissions
world news 24

This summer’s carbon emissions from Arctic wildfires were a third higher than last year’s previous record levels, research suggests.

The atmospheric monitoring service Copernicus says the fires which blazed during summer’s heatwaves are a cause for concern.

They say some so-called zombie fires are smouldering through the winter in peat below the frozen surface.

These underground fires then re-ignite surface vegetation in the Spring.

This spells double trouble: not just CO2 emissions from the burning vegetation, but also from the peat which is naturally a store for CO2.

The researchers estimate that from the start of January to the end of August, Arctic CO2 emissions from fires were 244 megatonnes.

That’s a huge figure - similar to the total for the whole economy of, say, Malaysia or Eygpt.

This wildfire index is just 17 years old, so it can’t paint a full historic picture.

But the scientists are alarmed that this year’s spike in wildfires follows 2019’s previous record, which in turn dwarfs previous trends.

The scientists say the wildfire outbreaks could be sparked by lightning strikes or human activity, as well as by zombie fires.

A senior scientist at Copernicus, Mark Parrington, told BBC News: “The high figure for wildfires last year caught us by surprise, so it was even more surprising to see this year’s figures so much higher still.
