Nearly 22,000 people, mostly children, are missing as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria, the Red Cross confirmed today.
The jihadist uprising which started in 2009 has killed more than 27,000 people, displaced some two million, and spilt over into neighbouring countries, sparking a dire humanitarian crisis.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement that the nearly 22,000 Nigerians constituted the highest number of missing persons registered with the organisation in any country.

Some 60 percent of the total were minors at the time they went missing, meaning that thousands of parents do not know where their children are and if they are alive or dead, according to the Red Cross.
“Every parent’s worst nightmare is not knowing where their child is. This is the tragic reality for thousands of Nigerian parents, leaving them with the anguish of a constant search,” ICRC President Peter Maurer said at the end of a five-day visit to Nigeria.

“People have the right to know the fate of their loved ones, and more needs to be done to prevent families from being separated in the first place,” he said.

During the visit, Maurer met with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, senior government officials, civil society and business leaders.

He also spoke with family members affected by conflict in the northeastern cities of Maiduguri and Monguno, many of whom have missing relatives.

The Red Cross said that some families were often separated while fleeing attacks, while others have had loved ones abducted or detained and do not know their whereabouts.

“The ICRC works with the Nigeria Red Cross and other Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in the region to trace missing people by showing photographs, calling out names and going.

The ruling party concluded its electoral college in Windhoek this morning. The party elected 96 members who will qualify to represent Swapo in the National Assembly for the next five years, depending on the number of seats the ruling party wins in the national election later this year.

Environment minister Pohamba Shifeta topped the list of male candidates, while the deputy minister of industrialisation, trade and SME development, Lucia Iipumbu, came first on the women's list.

Iipumbu is ranked fourth on the party list due to the practice of a 50/50 gender representation.

Environment minister Pohamba Shifeta topped the list of male candidates, while the deputy minister of industrialisation, trade and SME development, Lucia Iipumbu, came first on the women's list.
The first two slots on the list are occupied by Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and secretary general Sophia Shaningwa.

The party's deputy secretary general Marko Hausiku indicated that he would not be available to go to parliament next year. Thus he was excluded although he was an automatic candidate.

Among those who made the top ten is mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo in the fifth position, followed by prime minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila (6), and home affairs minister Frans Kapofi at number seven.

Johanna Kandjimi occupies the eighth position. Urban and rural development minister Peya Mushelenga came in at the ninth position while deputy minister of disability affairs Alexia Manombe-Ncube occupies the tenth position.

President Hage Geingob will add 10 more names to the list – as presidential nominees.
Tobie Aupindi, is at number 29 on the list.

Xenophobia: South African Govt Anticipates Buhari’s Visit

Amid recent attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, authorities in the country are anticipating President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit.
A statement for the South African presidency on Saturday explains that the Nigerian leader would undertake a State Visit to the country sometime in October.
The Nigerian government had announced on August 10 that the President would visit South Africa next month, but it is unclear if the visit will go as scheduled.

This comes amid growing concerns after Nigeria pulled out of the World Economic Summit taking place in the country over the attacks on its citizens.

Despite recent events, the South Africa government is optimistic that President Buhari’s state visit to the country will go as scheduled.

However, the Nigerian government has yet to confirm if the visit would take place.
This followed a meeting between South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the special envoy from Nigeria, Ambassador Ahmed Abubakar, which held on Friday afternoon in Pretoria.

Ambassador Abubakar, who is the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), conveyed President Buhari’s concern at recent events in South Africa, in the context of the strong and cordial relations that characterise the interaction between the two countries.

On his part, President Ramaphosa reaffirmed the relationship between the countries as being firm and strong, adding that both nations have been resolute in their shared commitment to building an Africa at peace with itself and others.

The South African leader said President Buhari conveyed his commitment to the values of prosperity and the advancement of the continent, shared by both countries and pledged Nigeria’s readiness to assist his country in finding lasting solutions.

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has reminded Swapo politicians that they are sent to parliament to represent the party and not their individual agendas.
He made these remarks during the opening of the ruling-party's electoral college in Windhoek today.
The gathering will finalise the list from which parliamentarians to represent the party in the National Assembly will be chosen.
Geingob said “As a Swapo party member of parliament, you must always be cognisant of the fact that you were not elected to parliament. Rather, it is the party which is elected by the people and on that basis, cadres enter parliament due to their ranking on the party list,"

He further cited that “So there is no way any Swapo party cadre should go to parliament and act as if he/she was individually elected. I hope that we keep this in mind and commit ourselves to stick to party rules"

The president also put strong emphasis on the process leading to the electoral college.

“I am aware that the process leading up to this electoral college was not smooth. There were periods when things seemed to be in disarray, but in true Swapo party fashion, you pulled
through,”.

He encouraged leaders to be diverse in the candidates they elect for parliament.

“I call upon those cadres who will be elected to the party list, to inculcate within the party rank and file, the ethos of Swapo, defined by our primary objective, which is to unite the people of Namibia, irrespective of race, religion, s*x or ethnic origin into a democratic, vibrant and peace-loving nation,”.
President Geingob will add 10 names to the party list after it is completed today.
