GOVT LIFTS FMD RESTRICTIONS IN SEVERAL REGIONS
Government has lifted the animal movement restrictions imposed on some parts of the northern communal areas.
In a media statement yesterday, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform announced that the restrictions, which were imposed in the Ohangwena, Kavango West, Oshikoto, Kavango East, Omusati and Oshana regions, are suspended.
The lifting of restrictions was effective immediately.
The restrictions were imposed to control animal movements after Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD) was detected in these areas. The restrictions meant that no animals and animal products may leave the restricted areas.
Many businesses in these areas, especially small grilled meat (Okapana) traders in the area, were badly affected by the restrictions as they could not secure meat to trade with.
After imposing the restrictions, the ministry embarked on a wide ranging cattle vaccination campaign in efforts to curtail the further spread of the disease.
According to the statement, should 90 days lapse without observing any new FMD case in the area were restrictions are in place, also reffered to as protected zone', the outbreak is considered to have been successfully controlled.
The last FMD positive case was observed on 20 January 2021, the statement noted.
