STEM and TVET are key drivers for economic growth
PETALING JAYA - 13 DEC - A strong foundation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) is crucial for driving innovation and boosting economic growth, according to experts. Rajah Rasiah, a professor at Universiti Malaya, emphasized that STEM education is key to producing a workforce capable of advancing Malaysia’s journey into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0). Meanwhile, TVET provides practical skills essential for various industries, including those related to climate resilience and digitalization. Both STEM and TVET are integral to creating a skilled labor force that can support high wages and entrepreneurship, helping Malaysia transition into a developed economy.
Madeline Berma, a senior fellow at the Institut Masa Depan Malaysia, added that STEM and TVET offer significant economic and social returns, especially in terms of career stability and income prospects. With semi-skilled workers currently making up 62.5% of Malaysia’s labor force, there is a push to increase the proportion of highly skilled workers to 45% by 2030. Graduates of STEM and TVET programs find it easier to secure employment, as they are equipped with critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative skills. The global impact of technological advancements and crises like the Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of these educational paths for the country’s workforce.
