HOMME TRIBUTE : BUSTER CRABBE

Buster Crabbe, born Clarence Linden Crabbe II on February 7, 1908, in Oakland, California, was a versatile American athlete and actor known for his roles in popular film serials of the 1930s and 1940s. Crabbe first gained national attention as a competitive swimmer, winning a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, following his bronze medal in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. His athletic prowess and striking looks soon caught the eye of Hollywood talent scouts, leading to a successful transition from sports to the silver screen.

Crabbe's most iconic roles came in the form of heroic characters in adventure serials. He first gained widespread fame portraying Tarzan in "Tarzan the Fearless" (1933), capitalizing on his athletic physique and natural charisma. However, it was his portrayal of Flash Gordon in the serials "Flash Gordon" (1936), "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" (1938), and "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940) that truly cemented his place in cinematic history. Crabbe's Flash Gordon became a defining character of the era, embodying the quintessential space hero battling intergalactic villains and saving the universe from evil.

In addition to Flash Gordon, Crabbe also starred as Buck Rogers in "Buck Rogers" (1939) and played the role of Billy the Kid in a series of Westerns. His ability to portray a wide range of characters, from swashbuckling heroes to rugged cowboys, showcased his versatility and ensured his enduring popularity among audiences.

Despite the decline in popularity of film serials by the late 1940s, Crabbe continued to work in television and made guest appearances on various shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He also found success as a businessman and fitness advocate, promoting physical fitness and healthy living.

Buster Crabbe passed away on April 23, 1983, but his legacy as a pioneering figure in action-adventure cinema remains intact. His contributions to the genre and his status as an Olympic champion make him a unique and celebrated figure in both sports and entertainment history.

STEINBECK & CHARLEY

Charley: John Steinbeck's Traveling Companion
Charley, a "blue" standard poodle, accompanied John Steinbeck on his journey across the United States.
Charles le Chien, a.k.a. Charley, was born on the outskirts of Paris in 1950. The well-groomed poodle who took much pride in his looks, preferred the French language over English and did not like being subjected to baby talk because, according to Steinbeck, "he feels that he is a first-rate dog and has no wish to be a second-rate human."
Feeling like he had lost touch with his own country, Steinbeck decided to travel across the US "in search of America" in a pickup-camper with Charley. Charley loved going on road trips and was apparently worried during the planning and packing that he would be left behind. "During the weeks of preparation he was underfoot the whole time and made a damned nuisance of himself. He took to hiding in the truck, creeping in and trying to make himself look small."
The two left in the fall of 1960, driving from the east to the west to the south and back up to Long Island. The mission of his trip was to interact with the common people, and Charley, his "ambassador", was a great icebreaker when it came to talking to strangers.
Months later, Steinbeck recorded their journey in a book titled Travels with Charley: In Search of America. The book is more focused on the people than Charley, but one passage really brings out the personality of his beloved poodle: "Charley likes to get up early, and he likes me to get up early, too. And why shouldn’t he? Right after his breakfast he goes back to sleep.

HOMME TRIBUTE : FAZAL MAHMOOD

Hollywood star Ava Gardner was captivated by Fazal Mahmood's charm when she saw him in Lahore in the 1950s. Queen Elizabeth II herself remarked on his striking blue eyes during Pakistan’s 1954 England tour.

Fazal’s heroic performance at the Oval, where he took 12 wickets, earned him the title "Hero of the Oval." In 1955, Wisden named him one of the five best cricketers of the year, a first for any Pakistani.

Fazal Mahmood, with his fair complexion and blue eyes, became a national heartthrob. He was also Pakistan's first player model, appearing in Brylcreem ads.

Born in Lahore on February 18, 1927, Fazal Mahmood graduated from Islamia College and earned an MA in Economics from Punjab University. He started playing cricket in 1943 and captained Pakistan in ten Tests.

After Pakistan gained Test status in 1952, Fazal’s outstanding performance against India in Lucknow silenced critics. He became the first Pakistani to take 100 Test wickets by dismissing Gary Sobers in 1959.

His fame even inspired poets like Majid Amjad, who immortalized him in verse. Fazal played 34 Tests, taking 139 wickets, and later joined the police, rising to DIG. After retiring, he became active in politics and community service.

Fazal Mahmood passed away on May 30, 2005, in Lahore, leaving behind a legacy of greatness both on and off the field. He was laid to rest in Garhi Shahu in Lahore.

HOMME TRIBUTE :

In 1960, David Latimer planted a tiny garden inside of a large glass bottle and sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.

For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.

HOMME - TRIBUTE :

The Headmaster of School has bought seven upright pianos for a total outlay of £16. The pianos have been placed all around the school for children to play at breaktimes and lunchtimes.

Most of the pianos were offered to the school by local residents who no longer had use for them. In fact, four of the “new” pianos were totally free, two cost £1 each on eBay and the “luxury” one cost £13.99.

A school spokesperson said: “The pianos have been placed around the school, mainly outdoors - but under cover.”

Interestingly, the pianos have turned out to be especially popular with boys in Year 9 and girls in the Sixth Form.

Headmaster, Charles Fillingham, previously worked on the Eurostar train and brought the idea up to the , from the pianos which are dotted around St Pancras Station in London.

This initiative formed part of Solihull School’s successful bid to be named as Independent School of the Year.

Mr Fillingham said: “Solihull School has some really talented pupil musicians and also some whose playing is less conventional. It is a delight to hear the pianos being played well and I am prepared to tolerate the crashing and banging that sometimes goes along with it.”

On the first day that the pianos were put into the school, a shy boy in Year 8 sat down to play a piece of classical music.

Afterwards, the other children gave him a round of applause.

Charles Fillingham added: “There are worse things that young people can do at lunchtime than mucking around on an old piano. Creativity, innovation, the arts and music are really important for a rounded education – at this price any school could afford to install pianos.”

About Maal Hijrah
Awal Muharram, the beginning of the new Hijrah year, is a historic occasion for Muslims around the world.

While traditions for Awal Muharram will vary from country to country, it is a public holiday in most Islamic countries, including Malaysia.

Awal Muharram is also known as Maal Hijrah in Malaysia.

To mark Awal Muharram, Muslims attend various religious activities, spiritual singing, religious meetings throughout the country. They recite Koranic verses and hold special prayers and sermons at public halls and mosques.

A popular Awal Muharram treat is a sweet rice porridge, called Bubur Asyura, which is eaten at breakfast together with friends and relatives.

The Islamic New Year represents the starting point of the Muslim era when Prophet Muhammad left Mecca for Medina to escape persecution in 622 CE.

The essence of Prophet Muhammad’s emigration was a process to change one's situation and as such, the focus of the festival is on reflection, remembrance and gratitude.

The arrival of the Hijrah year is seen as a time to make or renew resolutions. If the past year has been unproductive, Muslims must try to make this year constructive in every sense of the word. For those who led a meaningful life last year, then the aim this year is to be even better.

To mark the occasion, a 'Tokoh Ma'al Hijrah' is awarded to a Muslim personality to honour their contribution to Islam.

After the fuss over last week's unveiling of artist Jonathan Yeo's official portrait of King Charles III; today Art Guide presents a much gentler image of the King by London artist Eileen Hogan, dating to 2018. She first sketched this portrait while sitting across a desk as he worked in-home. It’s a simplified portrait that’s less posed and is filled with light. Paint medium is oil paint mixed with refined beeswax on paper.

HOMME TRIBUTE : The Angel of the North.

A 5 minute long exposure at the Angel of the North, during a vibrant sunset.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Completed in 1998, it is believed to be the largest sculpture of an angel in the world and is viewed by an estimated 33 million people every year due to its proximity to the A1 and A167 roads and the East Coast Main Line.[1][2] The design of the Angel, like many of Gormley's works, is based on Gormley's own body. The COR-TEN weathering steel material gives the sculpture its distinctive rusty, oxidised colour. It stands 20 metres (66 ft) tall with a wingspan of 54 metres (177 ft), larger than that of a Boeing 757 aircraft. The vertical ribs on its body and wings act as an external skeleton which direct oncoming wind to the sculpture's foundations, allowing it to withstand wind speeds of over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h).

PROVENANCE
Private collection, UK

Coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the birth of pioneer artist Mohd. Hoessein Enas (1924-1995), Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers is pleased to offer this early self portrait of the “Father of Malaysian Portrait Painting”.

It is dated 1949 when the artist would have been 24 or 25 and was painted in the same year that Hoessein moved from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to pursue a career as an artist. It is a significant moment in his career, but also in the history of Malaysian painting, capturing Hoessein’s personal transition from trishaw driver and street artist to being Malaysia’s first professional portrait painter. It serves as an advert for a gifted but newly established portrait painter seeking employment.

As well as being a momentous year in the career of Hoessein, 1949 is also the year that Tunku Abdul Rahman returned to Malaysia from his studies in England. His arrival in Penang in January 1949 coincides with Hoessein’s meeting with the art dealer Frank Sullivan. Sullivan would later serve as press secretary to Tunku Abdul Rahman and it is worth noting that Hoessein Enas's portrait of Sullivan, painted in the same year, can be seen in the National Art Gallery Malaysia.

Tunku Abdul Rahman served as the first prime minister of the newly independent Malaysia in 1957. Hoessein would paint his portrait on at least two separate occasions, while Tunku Abdul Rahman would write the foreword to Hoessein’s “Malaysians”, an illustrated book of 1963, portraying the varied faces of a newly independent country.
