KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Welfare Department (SWD) has denied that Siti Nuramira Abdullah (pic) is a disabled person (OKU) card holder as shown in an infographic that went viral on social media.

Siti Nuramira is the woman who allegedly insulted Islam by acting indecently during a performance at a comedy club here.

SWD in a statement on Wednesday (July 27) said that based on the records of the Information Management System for the Disabled, it found that Siti Nuramira was not an OKU card holder.

"The media are urged to obtain confirmation from SWD first to ensure that the matter reported is real," it added in the statement.

SWD also hoped that the report would be corrected immediately by the relevant parties to avoid misunderstandings among the community and in protecting the sensitivities of the disabled. - Bernama

JOHOR BARU: The King of Fruits is on the “menu” this Hungry Ghost Festival.

These paper durians – complete with prickly thorns and stalks – are the latest masterpiece of prayer paraphernalia shop owner Raymond Shieh.

He said it was his first time making durians for the month-long festival, which starts tomorrow.

“A customer who came all the way from Pontian (about 70km from here) asked for a basket of durians for her late father, who used to grow and pick the fruit before he passed away.

“It took me about a week to produce the rattan basket filled with seven durians.

“I wanted the thorns to be prickly to make it more convincing so I rolled the paper into a cone shape before attaching them one by one onto the main body,” he told The Star in an interview.

According to Shieh, the customer was overjoyed at the sight of the finished product.

During the Hungry Ghost Festival, on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar on Aug 12, paper offerings such as hell notes, houses and cars are usually burnt for loved ones and wandering spirits to satisfy their needs in the netherworld.

Shieh, who studied graphic design in college, started his prayer paraphernalia business in Taman Ehsan Jaya here eight years ago.

Last year, he tried his hands at making the “Covid-19 vaccines” as his customers had wished for their departed loved ones to be protected from the pandemic too.

Shieh said there were more orders for unconventional “hungry ghost gifts” this year, adding that he had also produced a fishing rod, a pair of badminton racquets and shuttlecock”.

IPOH: For ra**ng his Indonesian domestic helper three years ago, a High Court here sentenced Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong to 13 years in jail and two strokes of the cane.

In the dock, Yong, wearing a black suit, looked composed when the guilty verdict was delivered by Justice Abdul Wahab Mohamed.

In meting out the sentence yesterday, Justice Abdul Wahab said the court found the 52-year-old former state executive council member guilty of the crime after considering all the evidence and witness statements submitted.

He said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case.

“As the employer, you should be protecting her, especially when she has come from a different country, and not act according to your lust.

“This is a case where the proverb Harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi (trusting someone who ends up betraying us) fits.

“The court takes into consideration the public interest of this case, and a lesson not only to the accused but also to those who have the intention of committing a similar crime.

“A deterrent sentence will serve as a warning as cases of r**e are on the increase. I am sentencing you to 13 years in jail with two lashes of the cane,” he said.

In his 45-minute judgment, Justice Abdul Wahab said the court found the victim to be a credible witness, honest and convincing.

He said the court could not accept the argument that the victim made up stories about her being r***d.

“The court also finds elements of afterthought from the witnesses produced by the defence, especially in the time frame as to what occurred on the night of the incident, just as the accused, his wife and a friend had returned from Kuala Lumpur.

“The court also agrees with the prosecution that there was no concrete evidence or information that the accused was a victim of a political ploy and had enemies, as raised by the defence, which is baseless,” he said, adding that these arguments could not be proven.

Justice Abdul Wahab said the court agreed with the prosecution that the points raised by the defence, that the victim knew the person who took her to the police station, were merely bare claims.

“It was her first time in Malaysia to work, and to earn a living when she started working in the house of the accused, she never mixed or talked to strangers,” he added.

Yong’s lead counsel, Datuk Rajpal Singh, during mitigation said his client was married with four children and was the sole breadwinner of the family.

Salim Bashir, another of Yong’s counsel, said his client was a politician and assemblyman for nine years who did a lot of charity work.“The case does not involve an underage victim, or incest,” he said, adding that no blood was shed.

State prosecution director Azlina Rashdi asked for a deterrent sentence due to the nature and gravity of the crime.

“The trauma that the victim went through will haunt her for life, especially when she was threatened when the incident took place.

“As a leader, the accused should be portraying a good example, and not demean the dignity of a person,” she added.

Rajpal informed the court that they would be filing an appeal to the Court of Appeal and requested a stay of ex*****on, which the judge granted.

Justice Abdul Wahab also increased the current bail to RM30,000 from the initial RM15,000 as requested by Azlina with one surety, and ordered Yong to surrender his passport

Yong posted bail.

On Dec 7 last year, Yong was ordered to enter his defence after Justice Abdul Wahab ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven a prima facie case against Yong.

On Aug 23, 2019, Yong claimed trial at the Ipoh Sessions Court on a charge of ra**ng his then 23-year-old domestic helper. The offence was allegedly committed in a room on the top floor of his house in Meru Desa Park between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 7 that year.

In 2020, the Federal Court allowed Yong’s appeal to transfer the case from the Sessions Court to the High Court.

Yong was a former exco member during the tenure of the Pakatan Harapan leadership in the state.

He quit DAP after Perikatan Nasional formed the Perak government in March 2020.

He then joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in December 2020, before quitting and joining Parti Bangsa Malaysia early this year.

PETALING JAYA: Many traffic lights in Kuala Lumpur are malfunctioning due to the nationwide blackout that hit several parts of the country on Wednesday (July 27).

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution to prevent any untoward incident.

“DBKL traffic wardens have been mobilised to affected locations to regulate and monitor the situation,” Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said in a statement.

Klang Valley folk were caught off guard after a power outage hit several areas on Wednesday afternoon, disrupting their work and daily activities.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), in a statement, said the incident that began at 12.39pm involved several states in the peninsula.

“The outage accounted for 2.2GW of power, which comprised 10% of the total energy demand.

“Among areas affected were Petaling Jaya, Cheras, Bangi, Bayan Lepas, Seberang Jaya, Panchor and Bandar Indera Mahkota.

“Power supply to affected areas was restored within 20 to 40 minutes except to those in the Klang Valley,” it said.

Earlier, TNB said its technical team was working to identify the cause of the incident.

“Work is underway to restore the power supply. We apologise for the inconvenience,” it said in a statement via its TNB Careline’s official page.

SINGAPORE, July 27 (The Straits Times/ANN): An elderly man punched a wheelchair user who has cerebral palsy once on his face during a verbal dispute and the victim momentarily blacked out.

Juraimi Jaafar, 48, suffered a broken nose.

The assailant, Abdul Rahman Mohamed Hanafiah, 72, was on Tuesday (July 26) sentenced to three weeks' jail after he pleaded guilty to an assault charge.

Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture, according to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore, a charity organisation.

Caused by illness or injury to the brain before or during birth, or early in life, the condition is not curable and affects different parts of the body.

The court heard that Juraimi's mother is Abdul Rahman's adoptive sister.

Abdul Rahman used to live with the pair in their flat.

After moving out, he would occasionally return to the flat to check if there were any letters for him.

Abdul Rahman was at the void deck of a block of flats at around 6.30pm on March 3, 2020, when Juraimi, who was in a motorised wheelchair, spotted him.

He yelled at Abdul Rahman and told him to clear his belongings from the flat.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Shiau Yin said: "A verbal dispute ensued. The accused got angry and started walking towards the victim.

"The accused punched the victim once on his face. The victim felt giddy and blacked out momentarily."

Juraimi regained his vision soon after and realised that Abdul Rahman had left.

After discovering that his nose was bleeding, Juraimi asked a passer-by to help him call the police.

He then went to Changi General Hospital for treatment, the court heard.

IPOH: The High Court here has sentenced former Perak executive council member Paul Yong to 13 years jail and two lashes of the cane for ra**ng his Indonesian domestic helper three years ago.

In delivering his judgment, Justice Abdul Wahab Mohamed found the 52-year-old Tronoh assemblyman guilty of the crime after considering all the evidence submitted.

He said the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the prosecution’s case.

“As an employer, you should be protecting her, especially when she has come from a different country, and not act according to your lust.

“This is a case where the proverb ‘harap pagar, pagar makan padi’ (trusting someone who ends up betraying us) fits.

“The court takes into consideration the public interest of this case, and a lesson not only to the accused, but also to those who have intention to commit a similar crime.

“A deterrent sentence is required as a warning with r**e cases on the increase,” he said.

Earlier in his 45-minute judgement, he said the court has found that the victim is credible, honest and is telling the truth, and that her statements are convincing.

“The court also found that the victim did not make up any stories just to go back to her home country. There are also elements of afterthought from the defence witnesses.

“Also the point raised on a political ploy against the accused cannot be proved,” he added.

Yong’s lead counsel Datuk Rajpal Singh during mitigation said the accused is married with four children, and is the sole breadwinner of the family.

He said this was his client’s first offence, and that he had no previous criminal record.

Salim Bashir, the accused’s other counsel, said his client was a politician and assemblyman for nine years.

“As a politician, he has done a lot of welfare work helping the community. The case does not involve an underage victim or a case involving incest,” he said.

State prosecution director Azlina Rashdi asked for a deterrent sentence due to the nature and gravity of the crime.

She said a first-time offence, or no prior records didn’t necessarily translate to a lower sentence.

“The trauma that the victim went through will haunt her for life, especially when she was threatened when the incident took place.

“As a leader he should be portraying a good example, and should not bring down the dignity of a person.

“The example shown by the accused is not a good one, and to ensure others don’t follow what he did, a deterrent sentence is thus important,” she added.

Rajpal told the court that they would be filing for an appeal to the Court of Appeal.

The High Court also granted a stay of ex*****on to Yong pending an appeal.

Abdul Wahab also increased the current bail to RM30,000 from the earlier bail of RM15,000 with one surety, and directed for his passport to be surrendered to the court.

When met outside the court, Indonesian Embassy first secretary Junjungan Sigalingging said the Embassy was satisfied with the decision.

He said the decision has shown that the Malaysian legal system is able to bring justice.

“Today we are grateful to God Almighty, and we highly appreciate the judge who had shown wisdom and fairness in presiding over the case,” he added.

JOHOR BARU: Johor police have stopped their investigations against Malaysian businessman Tedy Teow, who is awaiting deportation to China after being arrested in Thailand.

State police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the deputy public prosecution's (DPP) office has classified the investigations against the Mobility Beyond Imagination (MBI) founder as “no further action” (NFA).

“We have informed Bukit Aman commercial department that our investigation against the suspect following a police report lodged against him in Pekan Nanas is under NFA by the deputy public prosecution.

“There are some elements and testimonies in our investigations that the DPP felt the case against the suspect could not move forward,” he added.

Comm Kamarul Zaman said this after attending the investiture ceremony of Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara at state police headquarters here on Wednesday (July 27).

Bukit Aman special branch chief Comm Datuk Seri Zamri Yahya handed out the awards to some 168 former and retired police personnel during the Emergency period.

Comm Kamarul Zaman added that following the NFA update, police have classified their investigations against Teow as solved.

“However, Bukit Aman is still investigating the suspect over his involvement in several other cases but in Johor, our investigations are already settled,” he said.
Teow is now in custody in Thailand and awaiting deportation after he was arrested in Songkhla last Friday. Both Malaysia and China want him in their hands.

The Malaysian police are applying for a repatriation exercise for Teow to return to the country to assist in investigations under Section 420 for cheating.

Beijing police also reportedly want him for questioning. This is after a suit filed at the end of last year by about 400 investors from China to recover investments worth some RM100mil.

In 2019, about 100 Chinese nationals staged a peaceful protest outside the Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur to complain that they had been cheated by an online pyramid scheme operated by MBI.

Last year, police said Teow and his two sons were also involved in a Macau scam totalling up to RM336mil.
