CHINESE CITIZENS ONLINE FRAUD SYNDICATE COLLAPSED IN LANGKAWI ISLAND

On January 12, 2023, the Malaysian Immigration Department had raided several resort centers on Langkawi Island and busted a syndicate of online fraud activities carried out by Chinese citizens.

The operation was conducted by a team of immigration officers from the Putrajaya Intelligence and Special Operations Department after receiving information from local leaders as well as the public community.

Based on the investigation carried out for six (06) months, JIM has successfully detected syndicate activities operating in resorts that have not yet been opened to the public after the PKP ended. The syndicate made the resort an operational center and also a place to train new members to be Operators of the online activities.

This syndicate owned by Chinese also recruited local citizens to carry out this activity. They were also found moving from one place to another and staying in one place for a period of between 3 weeks to a month.

The raid was carried out in three (03) different resorts. As many as 30 foreign nationals consisting of 27 Chinese nationals, 2 Thai nationals, 1 Myammar and 134 Malaysian nationals aged between 18 and 35 have been detained. The raid also seized 756 mobile phones, 150 computers and laptops as well as various other electronic equipment used in the activity.

Operations forces also seized as many as 17 passports of Chinese citizens. Check finds they are using a new passport that has no travel record. In addition, there are also those who entered using medical treatment pass and the rest are undocumented.

The results of the preliminary investigation against Malaysians detained in this operation found that they were paid up to RM3,000 per month and commissions as much as RM15 for each person who was successfully recruited.

The operating cost of the syndicate is estimated as much as RM800,000 per month consisting of non-residential salary, accommodation cost, hall rent and various other facilities.

The syndicate is believed to have been in tooperation for almost a year and often changes locations to avoid the activity being smelled by authorities. All information related to this syndicate will be shared with PDRM for related actions.

All of the Chinese nationals were detained and investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Passport Act 1966. The Malaysian citizen concerned will also be arrested for further investigation.

The department is grateful to the people who have cooperated until the syndicate could be demolished.
