Sensitive personal data — such as identification card copies, financial records and home addresses — remain exposed on government websites due to weak cybersecurity practices.

Many agencies store such information without proper authentication, making it easily accessible through simple online searches. This raises serious privacy concerns, especially since government entities are exempt from the Personal Data Protection Act, which applies only to private organisations.

The situation underscores the urgent need for a stronger cybersecurity framework, better enforcement and proactive risk management. Traditional cybersecurity measures like firewalls are no longer sufficient to counter evolving threats, particularly as outdated systems, poor access controls and a lack of cybersecurity awareness continue to expose public data to risks.

In response, Malaysia has introduced the Cyber Security Act 2024 and the Data Sharing Bill to mitigate these vulnerabilities. The Cyber Security Act classifies certain agencies as National Critical Information Infrastructure entities, requiring them to conduct security audits and adhere to cybersecurity standards.

However, government bodies remain exempt from key penalties.

Meanwhile, the Data Sharing Bill imposes fines and prison terms on officers who misuse or improperly disclose shared data.

To understand the impact of these new regulations and the broader challenges in securing personal data, The Edge speaks with government officials, cybersecurity experts and legal professionals.

“This is not a retrenchment; it is a right-sizing workforce exercise,” Muhammad Taufik said in a media briefing on the planned exercise on Friday.

“The rationale to do this is to ensure the survival of Petronas in the coming decades. If we don’t do it now, there will be no Petronas in 10 years,” Muhammad Taufik said.

However, there is no specific number of jobs that will be affected by the move, as the new structure will only be out in the second half of the year, he added.

The stock has rallied 12% this week, after the company said it will release two new products — a high-end SU7 Ultra vehicle and 15 Ultra phone — by month end. Its existing smartphones also got a boost from China’s increased consumer subsidies.

HSBC Holdings plc analyst Frank He raised forecasts for the company’s smartphone shipments by 2% in 2025, and by 3% for 2026. The subsidy programme’s inclusion of wearable devices is another near-term driver for Xiaomi’s growth, he wrote in a note, adding that the company may also benefit from rapidly declining artificial intelligence (AI) costs, triggered by the launch of AI model DeepSeek R-1.

“Given Xiaomi owns one of the most well-established AIoT device platforms worldwide, we are more positive on its growth outlook,” he said.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that Malaysia does not want any party to exploit its position as a semiconductor and regional logistics hub for illegal activities.

“We firmly adhere to export control regulations under the Strategic Trade Act, which governs the export, transit, and transhipment of strategic goods, including semiconductors.

“Malaysia’s policy aligns with control measures implemented by the US, the European Union (EU), and the UK,” he said during an interview on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara Aspirasi Ekonomi programme on Wednesday.
