As a creative endeavour from Mun Yeong, Shermene, and Chya Chyi, Bang Bang Zine centres on the art of storytelling with illustration in the medium of independent zine and print publication. Founded in 2017, our zine initiative formed together with a bunch of friends is inspired by the local-tea-drinking culture. Untried ideas have their voices heard through the making of zines. It is fascinating w

hen we see works come to fruition from a tiny story to finished publishing, but not limited to this medium. To us, stories always matter. The intriguing name of “Bang Bang Zine” is extended from the term that we love how different ideas bang with different sparks. In BBZ, play is our serious work in creating new possibilities. We hope to remind people to value the need for play no matter in good times or adversity. Under the brand Bang Bang Zine, we're running a risograph printing studio called INKINK DER (IID) based in the neighbourhood of Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. With risograph, we want to encourage people to create the aesthetic of their life using this medium from levels of art, business and education. The desire of bringing you more beautiful zine varieties has never faded from the beginning. We see ourselves growing to be a multifaceted brand: not just a zine publisher, but also a zine store, a risograph press, an illustration company, a curated gallery, and a playground for you to embrace stories and express with creativity. The Zine Bathroom Reader #4

Shmoo is a musician pretending to be an artist. Shh.. His fascination (obsession) with colors may be worrying for his therapist, but gives him a deep sense of satisfaction. He grew up in a not-so-colorful rural town in Kansas and has been backpacking through Asia with his partner for a year and a half on a journey to discover more colors. Now he is excited to show them to the world and send a few back home to his kitty in waiting - Suzy Creamcheese.

Shmoo keeps his first riso zine both fun and informative, blending satire, allegories, fun fact like rubber ducky and chickens plotting the destruction of humanity. And the usual.

Each zine comes with a 24cm x 26.5cm board game, a game rule card and 8 player pieces. It’s available now in our store at .kl and our website. Also, it’ll available at some consigned stores.

Fee includes 1 day pass. Limited to 6 participants per session. You’ll take home 6 copies of your 6 different postcards, a riso colour chart, and a BBZ riso postcard. All materials are provided.
This hands-on workshop is kid-friendly, suitable for children aged 4 and above. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by parents, guardians, or an adult.

We had a small group of Fine Art and Illustration students from in studio for a quick Riso sharing on Wednesday. Thank for introducing Risograph to his students! Looking forward to seeing more works experimenting with this printing technique.

Zinemate: #3 is now open for submissions!

Zinemate: is a zine publishing project by Bang Bang Zine launched in April 2023, that serves as a platform for collaborating with creators in zine publishing. With our guidance and consultation, we hope this project will be a great support for those who want to self-publish with risograph printing and present the works to a wider audience through stores and events.

Till today, we have published zines by creators from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Australia.

Third year of joining , we must say it is always an amazing experience to be a part of it.

The desire to push the boundaries of risograph in our works and bring you more zine varieties has never faded since the beginning. This year, we feel honoured to have hosted two different kinds of riso workshops successfully.

We printed our own newspaper 📰
Jalan-Jalan Paper is about gathering our exploration of different local places, events and cultures, presented in a tabloid format. Even though not many people read newspaper these days, having a personalised tabloid still feels like a casual, classic, and familiar way of recording where we’ve been and what we’ve experienced. This also marks our first risograph printing in an open A2 size.

In the first issue, we jalan-jalan in KL Bird Park.

Paper will be out on 8 Dec at KL Art Book Fair ✨

Stolen Treasures by Nicole Hardy (AU)

Nicole Hardy aka is an Australian zine maker, educator, graphic designer, writer and artist. She has been making zines since the 1990’s and still enjoy making them and teaching others about it too at university. She makes collages and comics too.

The repatriation of stolen Roman and Greek artefacts is a complex and controversial issue. There are arguments include considerations of justice, potential loss for museums and impacts on the public. These objects can be seen in the way that they are often fetishized, treated as objects of worship, which can lead to a disregard for their cultural context. If Roman and Greek artefacts could speak, what would they say about repatriation and idol worship?

Eczerama

Chein Shyan also know as Vanessartpuff, is a full-time illustrator and animator who has a deep curiosity and passion for exploring new ideas and mediums.

“Eczerama” is an internal monologue and an agonising cry about her eczema condition that comes and goes whenever it likes. This zine album showcases four main characters named after the symptoms and condition, comes with five edited AI-generated musics and four “celebrity” collectible cards. She hopes that people will relate to it and find a little joy and laughter in this itchy situation.

YANG is a graffiti artist and illustrator based in Kuala Lumpur, who creates characters and stories featuring vibrant colours and strong lines.
