All eyes are on the International Court of Justice as public hearings in the Rohingya genocide case begin on 12 January 2026. The case of The Gambia v. Myanmar represents a decisive moment for justice, accountability, and the protection of international law.

For hundreds of thousands of Rohingya, these hearings are a powerful sign that their suffering has not been forgotten. The proceedings also serve as a clear warning to abusive states worldwide that grave violations can and will be challenged before international courts.

On Monday, 11 January, the ICJ in The Hague, Netherlands, will open public hearings in The Gambia v. Myanmar, a landmark case under the 1948 Genocide Convention alleging that Myanmar committed genocide against the Rohingya people in Rakhine State.

The hearings are scheduled to run from January 12 to 29, 2026, and will include witness testimony and expert evidence.
