12 January 2016
Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts in Kota Kinabalu are abuzz with the sighting of a pair of Oriental Pied Hornbill in plain sight at Tanjung Aru beach. Upon observation and inspection, the pair is believe in the process of courting with the female Hornbill is inspecting a hole prepared by the male hornbill for mating.
Jonathan Cheah and Y.C Wee in his article entry about Oriental Pied Hornbill breeding in Bird Ecology Study Group website wrote, "Prior to breeding, a pair would indulge in courtship feeding and they would go prospecting for a suitable nesting cavity. The male bird would lure the female to the cavity, flying back and forth between the perch and the cavity. He would need to convince his mate that he is capable of feeding her once she is sealed up inside. He needs to demonstrate feeding at the cavity, sometimes placing food inside."

Their fate, however, is uncertain as the tree and nest is located next to some major demolition work being undertaken by City Hall at the iconic beach. Previous courting and mating was a success with hatchling, according to Jurdan, who work at Tg Aru beach few months ago where there is not demolition work nearby.
Unfortunately, the last spotted hatching which started learn to fly was fallen to the ground and was picked up by public and taken home. Jurdan also said to had spotted around 3 - 6 Oriental Pied Hornbill hanging around Tg Aru beach with 2 female among the group.
Assistant Director of SWD, Sen Nathan believed the Oriental Pied Hornbill come from island nearby and a pair decided to make a home at Tg Aru beach to breed. He explained it is hard to know whether there is hatchlings in the hole nest as there is no evidence of hatchlings spotted but constant and continue monitoring and evaluation of its welfare will be happen to the hornbill as demolition activities happening nearby.
