The annual Staff appreciation day took place on the 22nd of March 2021. This was the first on-campus event following the COVID-19 pandemic. The Student Association took the opportunity to extend their gratitude towards the support staff who work relentlessly to maintain and protect our university.

Dr Paul Hubbard as acting CEO also extended his thanks on behalf of the academic staff and expressed his gratitude towards the student association for organising the event regardless of the current circumstances.

This was followed by the presentation ceremony, where the support staff were given a token of appreciation and a certificate to recognise the invaluable service rendered by the support staff that facilitates a safe and conducive learning environment.

The event ended with the taking of a group picture.

As promised, here is the winning piece for Trilogy’s writers category. Congratulations to Huda from FIS for writing such a well-written, interesting story!

-

"It's corona time, ey, it’s corona time right now.” Rose instantly huffed, a solitary sweat trickled down her forehead, her fingers typed away swiftly on her phone’s keyboard.

"Rose!" a familiar voice filled her room, succeeded by the deafening slam of the wooden door. "Why on earth did you post that on your TikTok account?! Are you not even aware of how many young followers you have?!" Lisa's back was surprisingly straight, her two hands perfectly placed on her hips. Rose just rolled her eyes, her anticipation of her housemate’s overreaction was true.

Rose nonchalantly approached her pink velvety sofa, her eyes fixed on her phone’s screen. “What are you on about? Everyone is doing it anyway. A little exaggeration won’t hurt.” Before Rose’s eyes could even blink, her phone was already in Lisa’s clutch; having the risk to bid farewell.

“Don’t you dare, Lisa. You out of all people know how much I’ve worked to get my hands on that phone,” the black hole of her eyes shot lasers to the back of Lisa’s head. “Okay, fine. Just take down that TikTok video. Please.”

“I’ll think about it.”

**

“Congratulations Rose! Saw your TikTok’s followers. As expected our Rosie!”

Rose relentlessly rubbed her eyes, the first thing that her ears were ‘blessed’ with in the morning was an admiration from her agency’s CEO?

“Rose, are you there dear?”

“Ah yes, thank you Jennifer.”

“Few brands have contacted us, they would love to have a collaboration with you! We have accepted every offer. Don’t worry about a thing and rest well today.”

The phone call abruptly ended. Just like that. She must have thought that I am her asset, scoffed Rose. ‘Like I am going to have a rest day today, I’m swamped with assignments!’ was what she was thinking.

Despite her morning not taking off quite well, she was endlessly showered by praise the entire day. Or at least she thought she would be.

“Hey Rose, got a problem?” That was when things started to go astray. Countless murmurs in the hallway, superfluous doodles on her locker, the pungent smell in her bag, and the list went on.

Just as she wanted to succumb to the ground, a pair of black doc martens greeted her teary optics, compelling her to meet the owner’s tranquil gaze.

“You’re in my way. Stand up before I lift you up.” A male husky voice was evident in the air.

Rose scorned. ‘Do I look like I have time to joke around? For God’s sake, the hallway’s 5m wide.’

“You really think you haven’t done anything wrong, do you? Do you know what’s worse? The fact that you are not wearing a mask right now. Wake up, come back to your senses.”

After his footsteps left her eardrums, Rose gradually got herself back on her feet, assuring herself that it was just a difficult day.

But to Rose’s dismay, unfortunate events just kept chasing her non-stop. That night, an unidentified ID number called. “Miss Henderson? Apologies for bringing you some sad news. We are afraid we must breach your contract due to inevitable reasons. We are deeply sorry for not being able to inform you in person. Have a good day.”

Great. Just great. Her peers had turned her into an outcast, her agency ended things with her over a phone call, what’s next?

Knock, knock!

“What?”

“Have some manners, girl. You are supposed to say, please come in! Grow up, will you?”

“You’ll open it anyways, what’s the point?” Rose rolled her eyes, making it into a bad habit of hers.

“Shoot, I actually forgot what I wanted to tell you. Oh right. Rose, did you check your messages on your personal phone?”

“You know I only turn it on once a week, Lisa.”

“Oh my god, Roseanne! Come to the hospital with me this instant!”

Rose’s heart skipped a beat, her blood stopped flowing. She gaped at Lisa, ashen-faced.

Rose rushed to the desired destination, bare-faced, her mind kept replaying back images of her childhood. Finally stepping her feet on the white tile of the white building flashed back bittersweet memories.

“Mum... don’t leave me, please.”

“Miss Henderson? We are pleased to tell you that your mother is not in a serious condition. However, she is required to stay at the isolation centre as she is a COVID-19 carrier. You may see her briefly before she leaves tomorrow.”

Rose’s heart sank to the ground, trying to take everything in. Her mum... is... COVID-19... positive..?

“Rose, where are you going?! Aren’t you going to see your mum for the last time?!” Lisa managed to grasp her friend’s trembling hand.

“I’m not going. You go see her yourself. What if I also get infected? Remember the TikTok video I uploaded? I am a girl of my words.”

Rose’s back was all Lisa could see before she left.

Not wanting Mrs Henderson to suffer alone, Lisa met her and explained about what Rose was going through.

“So, she posted an insulting video about COVID-19 on some famous application? Is it that bad?”

The look on Mrs Henderson was unbearable for Lisa to face. “I am afraid so. She pointed out how easy it is to avoid getting infected by wearing masks and the virus would go away by just washing our hands consistently, and how foolish and careless people are to get infected as that means they did not bother to take care of themselves properly. Unfortunately, her one minute video went viral in less than twenty-four hours and numerous people were offended as their family members were also involved.”

“My poor daughter. It must have been hard for her. I still cannot do anything for her until the very end. I have been neglecting her ever since she was warded as a kid. It is my fault; I should have given her the love and attention she deserves. Thank you Lisa, for being that person to my precious jewel.”

“Lisa, I’ll fix this for her. This is the least I could do and who knows, the last thing I could do for my daughter. I will take down all the videos that other people had already spread through different platforms, by using my money and connections. Just ask Rose to delete the original video and share a sincere apology letter on social media. Could you please do this favour for me, dear?” Lisa nodded and promised she would help Rose.

Exactly a week later, everything had been settled. Rose carried on with her life as usual, as both a student and an influencer.

Thanks to Lisa’s help, Rose reconciled with her mother after she had recovered from COVID-19.

Lisa felt happy for her best friend and welcomed Mrs Henderson to live together with them so they can all bond together to substitute the time that they have missed.

With that, Rose had changed to be a better person to herself, family, and friends. Not only that, having the money and power as an influencer, Rose had decided to give charity to COVID-19 patients at a few isolation centres near her area.

Music is something that we all enjoy. There won't be even a single day in our lives where music doesn’t play a role. We are living because of the heart beating tune that is embedded in us till our last breath. Singing has been one of my passions ever since my childhood.

My name is Athira Ratheesh, Stage 1 MBBS student, here in NUMed, Malaysia.
My mum says that I had begun singing at the age of three and taken part & won prizes from second grade onwards in school for music & dance. I had been lucky enough to get an opportunity to go live on Radio Asia (UAE) when I was 5 years old and happy to become a part of NTV show in UAE last year (2019) (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1559841057480092).

I feel so blessed with my sound and glad to be a part of the school choir. I also got the chance to become the arts club secretary of my school in grade 11. I had gone for classical music & dance classes occasionally for 3 years before and had also completed debut on-stage performances for music and Bharathanatyam. Nowadays, I have been following my passion via Instagram (), by uploading songs, mainly South Indian tracks. I have always been obsessed with Malayalam (my mother tongue) and Tamil songs (both old and new). My parents had been supporting me always and helped me in achieving various prizes for different competitions (intra-school, inter school, district, and state levels).

I remember the first time I had been on the stage for a singing competition in second grade. I couldn’t speak a word, even though the teachers tried their best in at least making me tell my name itself through the mic. But, unfortunately, I had to set back from the competition due to my stage fright and had thought of giving up for the next coming competitions too. But, due to my parent’s support, I took part with confidence the next year (at least much better than the previous year) and over the years, I started feeling that my confidence was building up each year. And currently I am left with very less stage fear. If I had given up that time, I wouldn’t have been able to thank my past self right now.

Talent doesn’t simply mean singing, dancing or any other extracurricular activities. Even if you can give some relief to a dejected person, you are talented in understanding their feelings. I believe that each one of us is incredibly talented; it is just that some take time to find theirs. Just like how the famous alchemist Paulo Coelho says, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”. It is one of my favourite quotes, and it has always motivated me to be what I am today. I feel that if we continue to do what we love, follow our talents and work towards our passion, one day the world will recognize us. It might take some time, but you will be recognized. Maybe YOU can make the difference that the entire world is waiting for!!

The Chronicles of NUMedians: Into the Darkness.

It was 2020, a year full of surprises and horrors. Peeking through the window, my surprise turned to horror.

I saw my neighbour, who was living right across the street, grinning widely at me with his icy blue eyes and pale white skin. His smile was pure, yet eerie and ominous. There was something about it; I just couldn’t grasp what it was.

I didn't have time to. Mr Jenson started walking towards me, slowly at first with long, careful strides. Strides turned into short, angry steps until he was sprinting straight towards Carter's car. Only then did I notice that he was wearing stiletto heels and running at full speed. The same heels Carter bought me on my last birthday.

As he got closer to Carter’s car, I got a ‘better’ view. Mr Jenson, who lost his wife and only child a few days ago due to an accident, was holding a crowbar, eyes locked onto Carter. I tried to warn Carter, but I was paralysed mid-yell.

A pale, mysterious woman appeared next to me, magical energy emanating from her fingertips, binding me tight. She whispered, ‘Hush, darling. Let him finish his job and The Matron of Black Rose shall spare your life.’

I felt a chill down my spine as Mr Jenson kept on advancing towards Carter. The mysterious woman’s fingernails were digging into my skin as she held me tightly.

Although I wished this were all just my imagination, I could still see Carter cluelessly working on his car as he was approached by impending harm, and that was the last thing I remembered before I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I found myself tied to a tree, with cloaked figures standing around me chanting ‘The stars and the moon have rightly aligned, the blood sacrifice will be made, the portal shall reopen, and the Matron of Black Rose shall rise again.’

I found Carter lying on the ground, a bloodied figure placed in a pentacle - the pale woman standing over him. I closed my eyes as my head continued throbbing with pain until, a faint sound reached my ears.

The sound of trotting horses advancing from quite a distance. Hope. The first thing I felt. Without hesitating any longer, I screamed at the top of my lungs, so desperately, praying that I could draw someone’s attention. It was at that moment the woman turned around and our eyes locked. Her gaze was soulless.

‘There, look.’ The woman turned her head 180 degrees to show me the direction, with a resounding crack. Her eyes were still soulless as though she could not feel pain. I looked towards the direction the woman pointed.

It was a castle. I looked around and only now did I realise; I was in a very strange place. There was no sun, grass was fluorescent pink, and the horses I heard were merely skeletons. Turning back to face the woman, she started to run towards me, my subconscious told me to run, run as fast as I could.

Somehow, it felt like I was running towards her instead of away. I ran with all my might, but she seemed to be getting closer, then a sudden realisation hit me, what if I ran towards her?

Look out for the ending in the NU'sLetter Issue #10!

Fancy having intriguing conversations, got an eye for photography or perhaps a sports enthusiast. Want to volunteer? Discover the different realms of medicine, or simply break into a dance performance and just sing along? We’ve got it all!

Club Fest 2020 was set out to a stirring start, as booths and hosts were geared up to showcase what their club and society entails. Virtual club booths presented their infographics and videos, to promote and display events organised by their respective clubs. Interested members also had the opportunity to swing by, to interact with club representatives and committee members via Zoom meeting rooms and a live-chat platform.

Joining a club is a great way to break new grounds, indulge a passion and build social bonds. Especially in the midst of an E-learning environment, social connection is much crucial than ever. With club recruitments, a handful of sign-ups and the launch of newly established clubs, the long-standing tradition of Club Fest has been a rather smooth sail.

Shoutout to the Student Association for yet taking another initiative in making Club Fest 2020 happen! We are looking forward to see what each club has to offer this year.

Missed out on Club Fest? Go check out these clubs to see how you can get involved!

Uni years are said to be the best time of a student’s life. My time at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia was not any different. I would honestly say it was indeed the best time I have ever had. The countless memories and experiences I have gained in my time at NUMed, both as a student and being a Student Association member, have only nurtured and created a better version of me.

Covid-19 did turn the world upside down and though not seen by many; us students are also hugely affected by this adversity. However, stay strong and be there for each other. The care and support we provide each other is crucial for us students to sail through this tough time.

To the graduated batch, class of 2020 MBBS, BMS and FIS, my heartfelt congratulations and wishes. The hard work we have all put in did pay off and led us closer to our goals. And to the current batch of students; Be bold, be courageous, be your best.
Just remember that if opportunity does not knock, build a door, and create a path to achieve that opportunity. Do not be afraid to make mistakes or fail now, because this small hinderance is only a temporary obstacle that stands between you and your goals.

Finally, to the academic and non-academic staff of NUMed, A big thank you! Your assistance was paramount to each student’s victory and successful graduation.

Orientation Weekend 2020!

Last year’s gripping theme turned out to be this year’s unfortunate reality.

The Orientation Weekend is one of the most anticipated events in NUMed and certainly a time most freshers look forward to. In light of the ongoing pandemic and with regards to the practice of physical distancing and the current SOPs (Standard operating procedures) in place, the gathering was held quite different as per customary.

Despite this obstacle, it did not hold back the Student Association from organizing a spectacular event. On the 9th and 10th of October 2020, the Orientation Weekend was hosted via Zoom meetings. The event was timely arranged, with the meeting rooms and group allocations set up. After all, the start of something new was just a click away.

The first day of the event served as an opportunity for the newbies to get to know each other and their facilitators. The ice breaking session set in motion as everybody exchanged introductions, the seniors shared their insights on their university experience, followed by playing a variety of games.

Despite the physical distance, it added a moment of social connection that for many of us, was long overdue.

The following day, the main event commenced once the overall introductions were given by the current Student Association members along with their respective roles, in the hopes of allowing the students time to commit it to memory. This acted as an added incentive to keep track of and take photos of the Student Association members, as they ‘Zoomed’ from zoom group to zoom group, which would be tallied up alongside the points gained throughout the duration of the games played. Once Professor Chris Baldwin gave a few short words, the ensuing festivities would continue. In total there were 15 groups and the games ranged from the typical crossword puzzles with a NUMed twist, to more unconventional albeit fun games, such as trying to determine an object that was extremely zoomed in.

In honour of the theme this year, ‘Degree Delirium,’ students were out there to get their degree on avoiding procrastination at a fictitious university. Groups competed against each other as they completed different tasks and solved puzzles to earn their degree whilst watching out for the SA members.

As the night came to a close, Dr Paul Hubbard announced group 13 as the winner of the event, while the crowd celebrated with their screens blazing with emojis. In a moment akin to the passing of the torch, Kuhan, the former Student Association president congratulated Gauri, this year's Student Association president on the smooth event. Though the canvas would remain incomplete without the hue of talent that would soon follow. Musicians and singers enlivened the night as they put out their performances and in true digital fashion, the chat box filled with cheers and appreciation for fellow groupmates and friends.
Despite the imposter (virus) among us, our crewmates did not let us down. Kudos to members of the Student Association for their commendable efforts and for an event that will be one to remember!

08/10/2020

Volunteer In Me (Volume), an NGO, was founded in 2017, with the intentions of building a better Malaysia via volunteerism. It serves as a tool for volunteers to look for organizations in Johor to serve at through their website (www.volunteerinme.com) to easily find organizations to work with based on their interests. It is also an online community on Facebook, where like-minded individuals can gather to share their love for volunteering. They have partnered with over twelve organizations such as SPCA, HOPE JB, and Pusat Kebajikan Kalvari Johor to bring volunteering opportunities to the masses. In 2019, they were awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Global Outlook Award’ as part of the Pride of Newcastle University event.

Caroline U and Wenyang Hong are the two co-founders, both current medical doctors and alumni of NUMed (Class of 2019). It came to their attention that volunteering can be troublesome, due to the lack of accurate information on the internet. With the teachings of Winston Churchill in mind ‘A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty’, they wanted to be the solution for the problem, thus the creation of volume.

Their time in NUMed served as a platform to develop the necessary skills and networking opportunities to take their idea from the planning phase to ex*****on. Doing this whilst training to be a doctor was difficult, but they received tremendous help from other committee members from NUMed, Reading and even Southampton Universities. Together as a team they have conducted various events like sign language classes, a shoebox project for an orphanage, and a boardgame night.

For the years 2020 and 2021, they have decided to focus on the benefits of empowerment. The plan is to plant new leaders in various communities, to empower and enable them to create positive change in their own environments. The ‘Community Leaders Mentorship Program’ aims to do just that, a 4-6-month mentorship program with the two co-founders, focusing on leadership skills and program management. Under their guidance, the mentees will co-lead volume, develop their own programs and run it to completion. You can find out more and sign up here: https://www.facebook.com/volunteerinme. They are looking for two candidates, and the selection process will encompass two phases, an online form, and a virtual interview.

Dear NUMedians, the time has come for us to return to campus! But times have changed. As a result of the new normal, The NUMed Times is bringing to you an easy to understand infographic of the Standard Operating Procedures [SOPs] put in place by NUMed. These SOPs must be adhered to by the students that have opted for on-campus learning this semester. It is incredibly important that students always follow the SOPs in accordance with the university’s effort to maintain the safety of the people on campus.

PS: We would also like to credit and thank Aathira(Stage 1 MBBS), Shafiq(Stage 1 MBBS) and Rashi(Stage 2 BMS) for creating this infographic. A special thank you to the NUMed staff who provided us with the relevant information.
