Soriana’s Hypermarket Reopens After Being Shut Down Yesterday

This morning the big news were that after yesterday’s announcements stating the need to close the newly opened grocery store, Soriana was reopened and the while thing became water under the bridge.
The general secretary of the Los Cabos municipal government, José Guadalupe Higuera Espinoza, confirmed that the municipal authorities managed to obtain the required assurances from Soriana for the construction of the pedestrian bridge, and added that this structure is essential to improve road safety in the area.
For his part, the Mobility coordinator, Ricardo Reyes, explained that the guarantee signed for the construction of the bridge has a value of $13 million pesos and then explained that the construction of the bridge cannot be done by the municipal government because it is a construction in a federal area. Reyes added that the project is currently under review and approval by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
Furthermore the document received by the municipal government backnin September of last year states that Soriana was only committed to deliver the construction project as in the set of blueprints for the construction and then try to get other surrounding businesses to contribute funds for the construction.
All this meand that in reality the construction of the pedestrian bridge has not been approved and it is not likely that anything will be done about it before the end of this administration.

New Grocery Store Opened and Then Closed
The new Soriana Hyper-Market, as in bigger than big, that also announced will open 24-7, opened today with radio promotions, giveaways and mariachi music, only to be closed by municipal authorities from the tax audit office a few minutes later.
The opening of the store was announced a few weeks ago, only to have Los Cabos Mayor announce that the store wouldn’t be allowed to open until they build the pedestrian bridge they promised when the construction permits were issued.
Earlier this week Mayor Oscar Leggs said that the store could open when the commitments for the construction of the bridge were formalized.
According to the adjunct delegate for El Tezal, executives from Soriana met with municipal authorities this morning and agreed to sign the commitments and present the required paperwork for the opening of the store, however at the same time the store was opening with mariachi music and press members broadcasting the event. Less than an hour later tax authorities and police personnel were closing the store.

An unusual sighting of Blue Dragons, a type soft bodied mollusks, has been reported in La Ribera, off the beach from Costa Palmas resort. These small mollusks are beautifully colored and can measure around one to one and a half inches. Personnel form the Sea Turtle Protection Network made the report of large groups of these Blue Dragons in the area. Biologist Graciela Tiburcio commented that it is uncommon to see large groups of these species close to shore as they live in deep waters. She also points out that it is important to stay away for these nudibranchs as they can cause painful stings if touched.

This Thursday, April 11, the Cabo San Lucas marina was shut down by navy and state police personnel, presumably because the concession to operate the marina has expired. This was the reason given by a person who claimed to be an officer of the law who, along with a group of people and guarded by elements of Mexico’s Navy personnel were closing the accesses to the various docks.
When questioned, the alleged officials refused to give more information about the closure. However some of the personnel that were, as they put it, “securing” the marina said that the permit (concession) had expired, without giving more details about the situation.

According to locals with boats docked at the Marina, the API marina management offices knew nothing about the closure until users who couldn’t get to their boats reported the situation.

At a certain point, elements of the State Police guarded the area that was finally closed by officers from Mexico City, who placed official closure seals on the doors that give access to the docks.

The officials who came from Mexico City did not give statements, when approached by users of the marina who conduct their businesses in that area, they turned around and got into a golf cart in which they left the place along with some sailors who were guarding them.

This unannounced closure is surprising since it is an area with a large number of visitors and locals who conduct tourism related activities who as of this evening didn’t know how this action is going to impact their businesses.

With information from El Sudcaliforniano and local marina users.

Where Can I Watch the Eclipse? -
You Still have Time to Get There. If you are in this area, that is.

In Baja California Sur the percentage of sun occultation from today’s Solar Eclipse will go from 69.09% on Isla Natividad to 95.61% in San José del Cabo in the municipality of Los Cabos. Therefore, technically speaking, in BCS we will witness a partial eclipse.
The largest percent of sun occultation, that is the place where it will seem darkest is
located right between La Boca de La Palma and Las Dos Ballenas, about 21 km or 25 minutes driving from La Playita (San José del Cabo) along the Camino to the East Cape. Today's forecasts call for cloudy skies, hopefully the skies will clear for the eclipse watchers in this area.
