Just Like You Films is a nonprofit film company that offers a powerful tool in the fight against bullying. We develop films and materials that educate the local and global communities on how to communicate about difficult subjects, such as childhood cancer, burns, Down syndrome, and autism. JLY Films captures real life stories that teach children how we are more alike than we are different. JLY fi

lms have been viewed over 250,00 times on Youtube in 117 countries and are distributed across the U.S. Recently, the Brazilian government authorized a program where JLY - Down Syndrome will be played in every state health care facility in their country servicing 94 million people. We partner with national organizations like the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Down Syndrome Guild and the Autism Society. In 2013, the United Nations presented our Down Syndrome film to its members in a general session. And, we were honored to receive the 2013 TASH Positive Images in the Media Award, the 2014 NDSC Education Award, The 2014 Kansas City Jewish Film Festival Trailblazer Award, the AMC Cares Award and we were nominated in four categories and won The 2014 Golden Door International Film Festival Raising Awareness Award. In October 2014, with the help of our public television partner, KCPT, we will launch our films on Learn 360, an educational video subscription platform reaching 8 million kids in 25,000 schools in the United States and Canada.

Congrats to our JLYF Board member on breaking ground today on the Boone Theater! This is the newest project in the 18th and Vine Historic Jazz District and will be home to the Black Movie Hall of Fame and new state of the art movie theater. 👏🏼 Shawn has been a supporter of JLYF for over 18 years. Today on World Mental Health Day, and as we observe Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 6-12) and National Depression & Mental Health Screening Month, we are proud to partner with The University of Kansas Health System and encourage everyone to come together to promote awareness, understanding, and support for mental health, especially focusing on su***de prevention.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer can be such a difficult thing to explain to kids. Hope, Bryndon, and Carrie are kids who bravely share what it truly means to grapple with cancer in our documentary Just Like You - Cancer. This film helps create empathy and understanding for those battling cancer and seeks to offer hope and comfort to those feeling alone in their struggle. Royals Stadium was the backdrop for showcasing Ryan Lefebvre (the voice of ) in "Just Like You: Anxiety + Depression". Ryan has been public with his struggle of depression for many years and wrote a book in 2009 called "The Shame of Me: One Man's Journey to Depression and Back." This film includes Ryan and other stories from real people. You are not alone.

Rachel Bay Jones (yes, THE Rachel Bay Jones from film, TV, and Broadway ☺️) made such a powerful impact on our cerebral palsy movie, Rise and Shine. Rachel plays Janice in our film based on the true story of Janice and Terri Steele, adapted from her book “Remembering Terri” and brought to us by and . Her talent, professionalism, and empathy enriched every aspect of the production. We’re thrilled that she’s an Executive Producer and are so grateful to her for bringing this important story to life!

P.S. We can’t wait to see her in the upcoming show “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” on CBS this fall. 🤩

We are over the moon to announce that “Rise & Shine” is our first feature-length major motion picture and marks an exciting milestone—our first time in 18 years with a new director!

The incredibly talented and experienced, Laura Somers, has taken the helm, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about her vision!

By her side is our amazing First Assistant Director, Sarah Fleming, who has been an invaluable part of this journey.

Just Like You Films has been creating socially impactful films for over 18 years. Along the way, we’ve faced roadblocks, with the entertainment industry often telling us there’s little to no audience for our content. This was discouraging at times, but every time we felt down, an individual, family, community organization or corporation - like AMC Theatres - would step in and give us the spark we needed to keep going. Inspired by their support, we decided to pay it forward. This is the heart behind JIFF.

We want to encourage passionate filmmakers to keep creating socially impactful films. There is an audience out there for them. We are that audience. We want them to keep going, and know that we believe in them.

We will continue to celebrate talented filmmakers who are helping to create a kinder and more compassionate world through the power of film! 🎥 🥰 ✨

We were thrilled to work with Emmy winning editor Casey O’Brien to finish editing our film ‘May Contain: My Life’ – A docudrama feature film that dives deep into the real-life experiences of living with food allergies. By the end of the week, we will have 3 completed films in the “May Contain” package, which offer three ways into understanding life with food allergies. A really beautiful story about living with a disability that ambitiously reached into a lot of different areas of the young man’s life.
