Just Like You Films is a nonprofit film company that offers a powerful tool in the fight against bullying. We develop films and materials that educate the local and global communities on how to communicate about difficult subjects, such as childhood cancer, burns, Down syndrome, and autism. JLY Films captures real life stories that teach children how we are more alike than we are different. JLY fi

lms have been viewed over 250,00 times on Youtube in 117 countries and are distributed across the U.S. Recently, the Brazilian government authorized a program where JLY - Down Syndrome will be played in every state health care facility in their country servicing 94 million people. We partner with national organizations like the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the National Down Syndrome Society, the Down Syndrome Guild and the Autism Society. In 2013, the United Nations presented our Down Syndrome film to its members in a general session. And, we were honored to receive the 2013 TASH Positive Images in the Media Award, the 2014 NDSC Education Award, The 2014 Kansas City Jewish Film Festival Trailblazer Award, the AMC Cares Award and we were nominated in four categories and won The 2014 Golden Door International Film Festival Raising Awareness Award. In October 2014, with the help of our public television partner, KCPT, we will launch our films on Learn 360, an educational video subscription platform reaching 8 million kids in 25,000 schools in the United States and Canada.

A big milestone for Just Like You Films on the set of Rise and Shine! 🎬✨ For the first time, we had a crew so large we needed trailers—and we even learned the industry term honey wagon! (Spoiler: It’s not nearly as sweet as it sounds. 🚽😂) From wardrobe fittings to run-throughs at base camp, these trailers were a hub of behind-the-scenes action as we brought this story to life. Feeling thankful for all the incredible AD’s we’ve worked with on our films! The first assistant director (AD) is the director’s right hand. First ADs plan the filming schedule, working with the director, director of photography and other heads of department to ensure an efficient shoot. And our first AD’s have also doubled as hand models and actors. 😉 That’s how we do it at Just Like You!

This logo will be among the very first images audiences see at the beginning of each of our four new films—the May Contain Collection and Rise and Shine.

This animation reflects Just Like You Films’ filmmaking approach: capturing life as it is, balancing an uplifting tone with the difficult realities our stories convey.

1)“Spark”, a lone sphere bravely seeking to share a unique part of themselves that is often misunderstood and causes them pain.

2) “Beam”, the larger sphere, arrives, representing the many caring individuals of Just Like You Films—our community of supporters, volunteers, donors, producers, creatives, and filmmakers.

3) “Beam” ‘sees’ “Spark”, honors their bravery, and recognizes their purpose: to ignite a universal understanding that will end the stigma causing them pain, spread kindness, and shine a light on our common humanity.

Thank you to all of the amazing educators who joined us today at the Annual K-12 Tech Conference! We shared an exclusive preview of short clips and the trailer from May Contain: Two Sides, our latest VR film. Teachers and librarians shared the need for empathy and understanding of life threatening food allergies in the classroom and how VR technology can play an important role in education. We loved sharing our “VR Bar” and hearing feedback. Much more to come on this 3 part collection of films!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer can be such a difficult thing to explain to kids. Hope, Bryndon, and Carrie are kids who bravely share what it truly means to grapple with cancer in our documentary Just Like You - Cancer. This film helps create empathy and understanding for those battling cancer and seeks to offer hope and comfort to those feeling alone in their struggle. Woo hoo! Huge update! We were thrilled to work with Emmy winning editor Casey O’Brien to finish editing our film ‘May Contain: My Life’ – A docudrama feature film that dives deep into the real-life experiences of living with food allergies. By the end of the week, we will have 3 completed films in the “May Contain” package, which offer three ways into understanding life with food allergies.
