💀🎉What’s the Story Behind the “Calaverita Literaria”?

Did you know the origins of the calaverita literaria trace back to 1792? A Franciscan friar, Joaquín Bolaños, published La portentosa vida de la muerte, a satirical take on death. While colonial censorship delayed its evolution, by the mid-19th century, calaveritas emerged as sharp critiques of societal norms.

One of the earliest calaveritas appeared in 1849 in Guadalajara’s newspaper El Socialista, edited by José Indelicato. Writers cleverly mocked the elite and their European-inspired extravagance, demanding justice through humor and irony.

🌼 Paired with illustrations by José Guadalupe Posada (creator of the iconic Calavera Garbancera, later renamed La Catrina by Diego Rivera), these verses became a vibrant expression of Mexican culture.

💡 What Makes Calaveritas Special?
✔️ Rhyming verses filled with irony and humor.
✔️ Playful yet profound reminders of life’s impermanence.
✔️ Often dedicated to politicians, celebrities, or even friends!

💀🏵️Día de Mu***os is more than just a day; it's a time to honor and remember our loved ones who have passed. This rich Mexican tradition involves creating elaborate altars, offering food and drink, and visiting cemeteries.

🏵️Did you know? The celebrations often begin weeks in advance with preparations and rituals.

🏵️The altar of the dead is one of the most important traditions of the Day of the Dead in Mexico, as it represents an offering to deceased loved ones.

🏵️A variety of elements are placed such as food, photographs and objects used by the loved ones to whom it is addressed.

Each level of a traditional from 3 to 7-level altar holds deep spiritual meaning, representing the journey of the soul from the earthly realm to the afterlife.

Level 1: The Saint: Honoring the patron saint.
Level 2: The Souls: A passage for souls in purgatory.
Level 3: Purification: Salt for spiritual cleansing.
Level 4: The Soul: Bread of the dead, symbolizing the Eucharist.

🎨🖌️ José Clemente Orozco, one of Mexico's most renowned artists, used his powerful brushstrokes to paint a vivid picture of the nation's struggle for independence. His murals, characterized by their dramatic imagery and raw emotion, serve as a testament to the tumultuous period that shaped Mexico's identity. This iconic Mexican muralist's powerful works captured the spirit of the Mexican Revolution and continue to inspire artists today.
