UNSAFE ABORTION, SECOND HIGHEST CAUSE OF MARTENAL DEATHS- REPORT

Revelations from the Sensitisation meeting on the Termination of Pregnancy Bill (TOP) have it that unsafe abortion is the second major cause of maternal death among youths in the country.
Lead Champion for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights at the University of Malawi Samuel Chiumia disclosed this on Sunday when briefing representatives from various clubs and societies at the University of Malawi on the Contents of Termination of Pregnancy Bill, which was proposed by the Malawi Law Society in 2015 and is yet to be deliberated and passed in parliament.
Making his presentation, Chiumia noted that unsafe abortion though contentious in nature is claiming lives of innocent youths because they are not aware of the provisions of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill which if passed in parliament will help to reduce the maternal deaths among the youths in the country.
He further added that Malawians including those in authority do not discuss issues of abortion and the associated services due to political reasons and called on representatives of the clubs and societies to help combat unsafe abortion and be mindset change advocates.
During the meeting, One of the presenters Dan Chakhaza noted that negative mindset perpetrated by religious teachings and interests is also contributing to the rise in unsafe abortion in the country. He said people think that the church restricts its members to abort adding the church only supports conditional abortion. He has then called for a conserted efforts by all stakehorders to ensure that adolescent young mothers get the youth friendly services within the confort of their localities.

NBS Bank on 9 March 2024 announced to the public at University of Malawi's sports complex where it organized entertainment activities from Friday 8 March 2024, that it will provide academic funding to a 12 year old boy due to his dancing talent.
The boy attracted the attention of all the attendees at the scene with his unimagined dancing styles. The boy told colonels media that his real name is Aubrey Misi from Ntola (Mbeta zidyanji) area and he is in standard 4. Aubrey said that he is delighted with the opportunity.
The Boy showcased his talent by dancing perfectly to tunes of songs like "phone ya bae By Atot Manje".
The event was graced by highly followed Malawian artists like Phyzix, Slyc, Don Tarz and Malinga.
