University of Malawi director of student affairs Jonas Mwatseteza has appealed to the corporate sector to help students at the institution with gadgets like laptops to ease their studies.

Mwatseteza made the appeal earlier today when Move Secure Africa, a local ICT firm, donated two laptops to some students and two Wi-Fi routers, including gaming headphones to the institution.

In a separate interview, Move Secure Africa managing director Patrick Masamba said the firm was compelled to make the donation as part of its corporate and social responsibility.

One of the beneficiaries, Samuel Chiumia, a fourth year Bachelor's Degree in Education (Social Studies) student at the institution, expressed his profound gratitude to the firm for the gadgets.

SRC'S PRESS BRIEFING AS THE CAFETERIA TAKEOVER RAISES QUESTIONS

Speaking at a press briefing held yesterday at the presidential office in the sports complex, the SRC president Mr. Thanks Elia Mwalwanda refuted allegations that the cafeteria undercroft premises have been sieged by the University administration.

He clarified on how these premises have formerly been mis-managed. The president said that from the era of former SRC president, Mr. Phunyanya when these SRC premises began to be rented until the recent SRC, there has been embezzlement of money since there are no documents which reflect whether the funds were being deposited into the SRC account 1 or that the funds ever served some needy students. "

It is for this mismanagement of SRC money that has forced the University administration to come into action, as the assistant registrar responsible for administration, Mr. Kumvenji Lamba issued a notice to the business operators to vacate the places so that the businesses on these places should only be run by SRC itself", he said.

The president also expressed their(SRC) commitment in serving the interests of Unima students. He cited that his government has managed to deposit more than one hundred and seventy thousand kwacha into the account within the period of four days, a thing in history.

Further, they are the first SRC to sacrifise themselves not to go to the lake to have hand-overs considering the economic limp of SRC treasury.

He further added that in his government, there is no interference on the working of finance as well as the investments directorates. He boldly challenged that his government did not come to steal money since they have money already. "I did not come into the SRC while poor and the money I have , I can even buy food for all of you present here", proudly said the president.

On the issue of the trip to Liwonde, the president alongside other SRC members who bore witness, highlighted that no coin from SRC treasury was used but rather the vice Chancellor Professor Sajidu funded the trip. As an evidence to his claim, he brought an email which he wrote thanking the VC. He expressed concern that people are doing things on political stance.
" This is the time that Unima students must start behaving as intellectuals", he said.

The president refused to comment on the saga of leaked voice note which involved the council's vice general Secretary talking to the Director of Students Affairs(DoSA), saying this is undergoing some disciplinary measures.

Among other notable faces that were present during the press briefing were : Ms. Mieri Balakasi, director of Investments, Mr Prince Samalia, director of Culture and recreation, Ms Memory Chikwawa, deputy director of social welfare among others.

UNIMA HIRES KELMA AS ITS NEW SECURITY COMPANY

As the new year starts, University of Malawi administration has hired a new security company by the name KELMA to guard University of Malawi properties and premises.

The newly hired security company employees will be wearing green tops and green bottoms with black caps while commissioners will be wearing white shirts and black suits. Meanwhile, JIBS company whose contract has come to an end will provide limited personnel as they conclude handover ceremony to their friends.

The management has therefore urged everyone to cooperate with new company.

THREE UNIMA FEMALE STUDENTS DUMBFOUNDED AS THEIR LAPTOPS AND PHONES ARE STOLEN

Barely four days after a man was reportedly killed on allegation that he wanted to steal from Kalima's house, three girls in Chikanda urban are dumbfounded because their Laptops and Phones have been stolen today.

An informant has told Colonels Media that three Laptops and three Phones belonging to three girls residing in Mandele Hostel after the small bridge have been stolen.

According to the information that Colonels Media have, the room from which the Laptops and Phones were stolen was unlocked and the curtains too were up. The first girl's phone was under the pillow, but her Laptop was somewhere visible. The second girl's Laptop and phone were under the pillow beneath the mosquito net. The last girl's phone was in bag but her Laptop was somewhere visible too. They woke up and saw the door was a bit open, they decided to check their gadgets but the gadgets were already gone. One of the girls went outside to check if the guard was around, but he was still sleeping inside the small house by the gate. They borrowed phones to inform there parents.

It has also been discovered that the thief has also stolen some underwears and Zitenje that were hanged outside.

Meanwhile, one of the girls parents has arrived and she is exchanging some words with the guard.

UNIMA CCJP DECLARES AN INVESTIGATION ON MISMANAGEMENT OF UNIMASA FUNDS

University of Malawi Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP, an Organization which fights for justice and peace), has disclosed that it has instituted an independent investigation into mismanagement of UNIMASA funds by SRC in order to establish the facts.

A memo addressed to University of Malawi (UNIMA) students, signed by Gift Muyayi, Chairperson of the UNIMA CCJP, the commission affirmed its determination, stating that it will persist until those responsible for misusing UNIMASA funds are apprehended and brought to justice.

"Be assured that CCJP will punch
and punch and punch till the ‘big fish’ is unveiled" Reads part of the memo.

The development comes after a leaked audio clip which is circulating indicates that UNIMASA funds were purportedly misused during a leadership seminar organized by the current SRC in Liwonde on December 26th and 27th, 2023.

Furthermore, the Chairperson of CCJP has confirmed in his memo that no any authority or person will distract their investigation and any person who will be found as a culprit will undergo disciplinary hearing in line with the university rules.

UNIMA CCJP is an organization at University of Malawi which is determined to ensure that Justice prevails at UNIMA.

VILLAGERS DEMAND COMPENSATION FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI OVER LAND ISSUES

One of the Residents occupying part of University of Malawi land has threatened to drag the University to court if it fails to compensate him for crops he planted on the land which the University now wants back.

An informant has told Colonels Media that some villagers who were entrusted to be using the land that belongs to the University of Malawi for farming because the land was too huge for the University to use at once, are refusing to vacatele the land as agreed.

"The University gave part of its land to the villagers to use it until when the University needs it. In the agreement, it was signed that the villagers will be planting any kind of crop that is not perennial because the land will be taken soon or later. However, some of the villagers planted perennial crops like bananas and sugarcane." He said.

"When the University told them that the time has come for the land to be used for some development, some villagers agreed while others didn't. This did not go well. The University started forcing them to vacate However, some villagers for example ,the family of Bakili have decided to take the matter to Chiefs, like T/A Mwambo and even to court after the festive season claiming that they have planted some bananas and sugarcane around Kamungu theological college", He added.

Speaking to Colonels Media, one of the University Officials said that it is true that some villagers are resisting to evacuate the University land saying that they need compensation for the bananas and sugarcane that are there and he added that the University is not ready to compensate them.

"I will not say much , but the University can not compensate them even if they go to court. The University have files concerning the agreement", Said Tiwonge (not his real name).

Meanwhile, it is allegedly said that the University has solved about five serious cases involving the residents and the University.

POOR HYGIENE AT THE SPORTS COMPLEX THREATENS STUDENTS' HEALTH

Sanitation and students privacy have gone out of control at the Sports Complex Lavatory area putting students health and security rights at risk, Colonels Media can confirm.

A visit to the site on Thursday reveled that there are no lights in the gents and the ladies sections. Some toilets are not functioning and also they are producing a strong bad smell. The doors to some toilets are dismantled with their parts lying across the floor making the area almost inaccessible to the public due to its condition.

"there is a certain toilet, it's disconnected to the tap and that means no water goes into the tank. They use a pail that I found there. Since it was night I didn't check for alot of things. There is no bulb ofcourse. Otherwise it looked clean apart from the bad smell coming from the toilets which I suggest it's because cleaners are on a holiday too". said one of the students, Takondwa Mpinganjira to Colonels Media.

The gents section on the other hand has a wet floor and it is smelling, this is making it hard for people to use the toilets.

Director of Environment, Safety and Health, Shadrake Thomson Mkandawire acknowledged the situation saying his office is aware that some toilets need to be maintained and that the matter was already reported to the administration for action.

"I already presented the issue of sanitation at the maintenance but I was not really aware about the electricity issue.
Now that my office has been informed, I'm taking it to the relevant authorities responsible for that". Said Mkandawire

UNIMA STUDENTS' DISHEARTENED REACTIONS TOWARDS SRC'S MISLEADING AND DISHONEST REMARKS

The UNIMA Student Representative Council (SRC) found itself embroiled in controversy following allegations of dishonesty during an exclusive interview on December 27, 2023. In the interview, the General Secretary asserted that a leadership seminar held in Liwonde had received sponsorship solely from the University of Malawi's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samson Sajidu, without utilizing any SRC funds.

However, a leaked audio clip circulating contradicts this statement, revealing that the current SRC had indeed allocated funds for the seminar in their budget. This inconsistency has sparked widespread criticism and disappointment among students who had placed their trust in the SRC.

Speaking to Colonels Media, political activist, Alfred Tepu Tepu expressed profound disappointment, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and accountability within the SRC. Tepu Tepu highlighted the breach of trust, urging the current leadership to prioritize honesty and integrity in their dealings.

"l urge the SRC to reflect on the gravity of their actions and the impact they have on the reputation of our institution and the trust placed in student leadership. The student body deserves transparency, ethical conduct, and accountability from its representatives" Tepu Tepu said

Joining the chorus of disapproval, another activist, Innocent Kachere, emphasized that the incident reflects poorly on Mr. Mwalwanda's leadership, raising concerns about transparency and integrity within the current SRC administration.

Kachere highlighted that the leaked audio clip is an indication of lack of integrity within the SRC's leadership. underscoring the urgent need for a renewed focus on transparency and accountability.

"It has raised questions about transparency and accountability within the leadership.The picture it shows about the current leadership in terms of good governance may be one of concern, as secrecy can undermine trust. My message to SRC is to prioritize transparency, address concerns, and work towards fostering an environment of openness for better governance" Kachere said

Meanwhile the officials of SRC are yet to comment on the matter.

SRC UNDERFIRE FOR ATTEMPTING TO DISRUPT AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Students Representative Council last night faced criticism from people on Colonels Media Whatsapp Group when they tried to bring chaos as Lewis Kazembe was engaging Former SRC General Secretary Samuel Chiumia on allegation that the immidiate past SRC left debts amounting to four million Kwacha when they left office

The drama particularly ensued when Chiumia was narrating how the immidiate past SRC worked to serve students during their time in SRC.

During the interview, some current SRC members started bringing some issues not related to the topic prompting the admin to momentarily close the group.

One of the student Liberty Phiri wondered why would the SRC leadership engaged in such an act

"The last interview with the Current SRC General Secretary had no such attention from anyone in the current SRC. Why then were they disturbing this interview?

Another one Patrick Mpulula said what the current SRC did was unacceptable

" Let me begin by saying that it is very strange, worrisome and barbaric the way the current SRC tried to jeopardize the interview. In my little observation I think this was their defensive mechanism that would see the interveiw being prematurely terminated This also compels me to think that the current SRC has no intentions to practise transparency and accountability which are vital when leadership is concerned. '

Another one Milliam Msukwa Chisula added

"Based on how I followed the interview. I may conclude to say chiumia did not clearly want to spit the truth that they left the SRC account with less money. These interviews are good as they are helping students to know what is happening in the src".

Sheila Goodwell also added
" Elia said in his Voice Note that it's not true that they left debts, how come then he didn't bring forth evidence and sound arguments?

However, both President Thanks Elia Mwalwanda and Speaker Peter Ndolo dismissed the assertions saying they had no intentions to disrupt the interview

"That is not true. People should stop being too serious with life sometimes"

Mwalwanda however commended Colonels Media for following up on issues saying this allows people to follow up on how there money is being used.

On his part, Speaker Peter Ndolo further said that "the fact of the matter is that we never planned on diverting people's attention. What you need to know is that some of us are too interactive, we always make sure we find something to talk about and make People smile.
